Listened to this once a while back, don't care to ever hear it again. This will be the first time ever that I don't buy a new Prince record.

Still, I look forward to the train wreck of a thread that will be posted when/if it's released.

I call bullshit. You'll be there at Prince's doorstep with your wallet out, ready to dish out whatever he charges. You're gonna buy the new record, because it's gonna be PURPLE AND RADICAL!!!!!!!!!!!! (love ur pic cuz I love Kate Bush, btw.)

I only got 3/4 of the way through, you get the idea after the first middling minute--a boring, trite beat, with daft lyrics, repeat a few times, then fade. But to Prince's credit, I didn't hear anything that sounded like another failed attempt at retreading his 80's sound, just another sleep inducing plopper. How was anyone reminded of his long gone glory days from this adult contemporary snooze fest? Because it has a synth? You people are more desperate than Prince trying to craft a pop song.

This boring dud wouldn't even make your local supermarket's playlist.

What's your favorite song that has come out in the last year?

This. A thousand times, this.

He writes about his world. His world is not my world. In fact he has little to say that interests me, inspires me or intrigues me. But I never really listen to lyrics much so it's okay.

So going back to the song... well it's been a few weeks now and I have to say I still like it but...

1. The lyrics (I chose to listen this time) are simplistic to the point of dull, "WE-EEE ARE NEVER EVER EVER, GETTING BACK TOGETHER!", "WE FELL IN LOVE IN A HOPELESS PLACE" (REPEAT 10 TIMES), "LET'S LIVE LIKE WE'RE GONNA DIE YOUNG!" Are those three lyrics more complex? Because those three lyrics are from top ten pop songs from this year. So RNR LOVE AFFAIR is simplistic compared to what? Why is simple a bad thing?

2. The keyboard stabs are too blatant to not be considered self-plagiarism, ONE OF THE BIGGEST SELLING ALBUMS FROM THE LAST TEN YEARS IS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKES "FUTURE SEX/LOVE SOUNDS". HEAR THOSE KEYBOARD STABS? PRINCE PLAGIARISM. HAVE YOU EVER READ A REVIEW FROM THE PAST TEN YEARS OF NEW POP MUSIC. LET ME KNOW HOW MANY TIMES YOU READ THE PHRASE "80'S SYNTH POP" IN REVIEWS OF NEW ALBUMS FROM THE LAST DECADE. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.

3. His voice is either going or he has no passion for it. MAYBE HE SHOULD USE AUTO TUNE, WHAT'S THE FUCKING DIFFERENCE? HE SOUNDS FINE. 10% OF PRINCE'S VOICE KICKS THE ASS OF 90% OF THE VOICES I HEAR COMING OUT OF MY RADIO. WELL, THE ONES THAT AREN'T AUTO TUNED ANYWAY.

Things I do like about the song are the lack of a chorus, the absence of unneccesary guitar and the very Prince-like bridges he uses throughout. Some have commented that it is perhaps too subtle (I choose my words lightly there) a tune, but I think that as a work in progress it has some beautiful moments. And, yes, Radio2 would play it. It's middle-of-the-day AOR. He's up there with the rest of the dinosaurs now. Rea, Stones, Dylan, Cliff, McCartney, Gilmour, Wonder, Cher and so on.

And he's not a dinosaur IMHO.

I'm not going to hold myself responsible for the musical choices you make as to what you listen to. I personally don't really enjoy pop, mainly for the examples you've posted above, so I find it hard to reply to your post. If I did listen to, or follow, pop music then I'm sure I'd be able to agree with what you said and would feel the same way. However, I don't.

Haven't read through all the comments, so forgive me if I state the obvious...

This track sounds like an extended version of Take Me With You !!

I wasn't so keen when I first heard it, but listening again today I quite like it (not sure it's a new single though, but would be fun live)

Agreed. smile

First, I love that photo - Prince looks great and the outfit is cool.

Second, anything that is reminiscent of Purple Rain is a good thing (for me anyway).

Third: for some people here, Prince will never be able to do anything right .. because they just seem to hate everything he does. Even if they had a wishlist and he'd do everything the way they want it, they would still find a reason to complain!!!

And finally: at least some of us appreciate that he still keeps making music and giving concerts! Thank goodness for that! biggrin

people listen and leave there review of how shitty the song is .. then all the groupies come on and complain about the negative criticism every five minutes inciting responses .. the groupies invest more energy into ragging on the people with good taste than they do saying postitive things about the crappy song in question .. and they spend more energy ragging on haters than than they do listening to the crappy song .. why not just read the thread once and be done with it groupies? people are gonna check out the song and leave an opinion .. how about all the groupies just let the people with good taste do what they want.. post what they want .. without wasting thread after thread trying to bully the people with good taste out of posting at all .. the real question is .. why do you spend more time bullying people with good taste than you do listening to the new supposed "masterpiece"? its because the people with good taste are more interesting than the actual song by prince .. u know its sad but true .. no go listen to the new prince penned golden girls theme and stop wasting all your energy enabling your musical denial

imagine that. a black van stops in front of your house. couple of big dudes get out,

knock on your door and go "we brought you the new prince".

you stutter "but i don't like it, i've heard it online, i hate it!"

they just hold you down, tie you to a chair, put headphones on you and then they

just go have a rummage through your fridge and play some cards in the kitchen,

as you sit strapped to the chair, forced to listen to the new prince with headphones

on and the volume up to 10.

lol

people would be all "oh jeez, prince just released a new single, time to put up the

hurricane shutters again"

Tremolina

It's really a pretty good and most of all catchy song. Not fantastic but not mediocre either.

Could sell if it's promoted right (read: blasted on all the airwaves day and night)

Musically it's interesting with its country/rock and roll groove, and its funky/soulful bridge and little rifs.

Performance wise I am less pleased. It's not bad, the singing is pretty good for example, but I don't really like the sound of the synths.

The melody is good and catchy, but I think it should be the horns all the way.

Lyrically, hmmm... Not sure yet. Seem kind of superficial on the surface. So I have to reserve judgement on that one.

Sound production wise I think it's an improvement but it's still sort of '20ten-ish'.

All in all: a pretty good song. nod

Why the surprise? Prince is not stupid. He been in the business for almost 35 years. He knows how to get a hit when he wants it. I guess Andy has really motivated him to show how its really done.People need to thank her.She has brought Prince back to the top of the charts again with a crossover hit...

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

On a positive note I can report that last evening they played this song just before the 1800(that's 6pm in the anglosphere) news on Radio Centro Suono 101.3 FM in Roma Italy, much to my amazement. On a not so positive note the DJ at the end of the song said he really loved it and it reminded him of wait for it........Huey Lewis and the News hmmm

The song is definetely nothing groundbreaking, but it is not a poor song. I do think it may work for radio. Europe may be an easier radio market to crack as it is much more fragmented in terms of ownership than in the US and less genre specific radio stations.

Many want new music, here it is, no obligation to like it, take it or move on to the next thing.

Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.

Haven't heard it on Dutch radio yet.

Allthough it should not be hard to get it played over here, because the most popular dDtch radio-DJ, Giel Beelen, is a huge Prince fan.

He also has a weekly tv-colum (De wereld draait door) where he will comment on snippets of new songs, surely he would promote a prince song.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
