I thought his vocals were on point. He has a great voice! I think the performance would have been better if the band members were closer to him on the stage. They were too spread out and they would have added more umph (not sure of the right word) to it.

That stage was too big for them to be bunched together plus to get the full complete horn sound. Would have been a horrid sound. I guess its safe to say U not a musician..

Actually I'm not a musician and if that was the reason they were set up that way (putting them closer will create a bad sound) I would totally accept that. I'm going to respond in a mature way and not at that unnecessary dig.

Getting off topic, but is spacing particularly important with electric instruments, like b/c of feedback? I play music as an enthusiastic hobby, but only non-electrified (piano, cello, clarinet - classical & some jazz).

This. A thousand times, this.

The same could be said about a fan who hasn't enjoyed anything Prince has done in 17 years. What do you have to offer a fan who has enjoyed his entire career? What are you enlightening us to that we don't already know about(we have the same records as you)? What could you possibly have to say about a world you checked out of in 1995?

I never in my life criticized any of Prince's music, but I don't think he's ever done worse than this one. I wish I could hear what others who like it hear.

I guess you never heard Purple and Gold! lol

It didnt have any airplay on german radios so far afaik.

The song is a mediocre song to me, nothing special, 5/10 as its best.

There are a quadrillion other Prince songs that might have been better for a single release imo.

Can someone explain to me what "boo boo" is? I'm getting an image of Gary Coleman pulling a face or Carlton Banks acting pompous. Either way very 80s and very camp.

The music sounds like a 70's version of "Take Me With U"...

I wonder why Prince is obsessed with this outdated 70's sound lately and all the horns.

I wouldn't count him out just yet...

I would. For years I kept thinking that he'd pull something out of the bag. But for someone who used to be able to write and record When Doves Cry and Thieves in the Temple in one day, if he can only produce a song that is worthy for a b-side after such a long break, there really is no hope. I'm resigned to that idea now.

[Edited 10/15/12 14:29pm]

Me too. It seems that most artists - once they reach the 20-25 year mark in their careers - are just completely out of ideas after that and almost everything they release from that point on is mediocre.

This has nothing to do with electric instruments. It's about mics and pick-ups. Some frequencies will go back and forth and therefore get stronger and stronger, creating that feedback sound (to put it as simple as possible).

Note that you can get feedback with an electric guitar, but you won't get any with a keyboard (even though both are "electric instruments"). The instruments you mentioned are usually called "acoustic instruments", which, however, doesn't mean you can't mic them, which in return would create the possibility of feedback, which is why you do have to consider where you put them and which frequencies you want to eliminate.

Placement can be slightly important on keyboards, too, in the sense that you don't want to use cables that are longer than necessary, because you might risk the surrounding radiation to interfere with your sound signal.

There is no rule anywhere in the world that we live in that states that you have to Love every song that Prince records. To bitch about it every single day, though? Some of you really need to lock yourselves in a room and play Purple Rain all day. No, seriously... lol. Some make it sound like Prince is the worst performer ever, or at least since the last record they liked. If you're on here on a daily basis and haven't liked his music since '93 or so.... it might be time to come up with another hobby or join Justin Bieber's fanpage. razz
