news from the folks who run prince.org
January 30th, 2009
There’s a little notice over at our friend-site, housequake.com today that says:
Housequake.com is closed until further notice…
On ‘request’ by Prince I changed back the old Housequake header. Sorry people, but I can’t afford to play any more games. Thanks to Prince & his staff for their “support” over the years.
/Aaron
I don’t know the entire story, but understand it to be something along the lines of a disagreement over (the usual) copyright wrangling between Prince and his fansites, of the same sort that this site has been involved in in the past, multiple times. It really doesn’t matter much what the exact details are — clearly, there is, and has pretty much always been, a disconnect between how Prince perceives his best business interests, and his fans’ desired acceptance of their abilities to ‘remix’ officially-sourced content (photos, lyrics, you name it), etc.
This particular latest development in the ongoing tug-of-rope between the Prince camp and the fans, isn’t really anything new, but it’s somewhat remarkable in that it has convinced, temporarily or permanently, one of Prince’s biggest and most dedicated supporters, Aaron, to throw in the towel. I hope it’s only temporary, but I wouldn’t blame him if HQ was shuttered for good. It’s incredibly frustrating committing your time, money, and effort to a site for Prince fans, which directly or indirectly, you feel benefits an artist. I don’t want to speak for any of the HQ staff, but I believe they probably feel the same way I do: that our sites are a key driver of fan loyalty, overall positive publicity, sales of albums and concert tickets, and a continued sense of relevancy in today’s culture.
Now, maybe Prince doesn’t agree that our sites perform these roles. Or maybe I’m wrong about it (but I doubt that). Really, it’s fine, I’ve made my peace with this situation long ago. I’ve been saying since the site started that prince.org has nothing directly to do with Prince, but everything to do with the extremely diverse community that has grown out of past and present (and if he’s lucky, future) Prince fans. When we launched this site in 1999, it was right in the banner as it is today: independent and unofficial. We don’t want any special treatment from Prince or his camp, at least not if there’s strings attached (and, there always are). We just want to bring folks together who might have now, or have had, a common interest, a common thread of experience as a basis for sparking communication and speaking with a bit of shared lexicon. Sure, we’re happy to provide some Prince-related news and trivia, etc. as well; that stuff is of interest to some segment of the community, and is a resource to the internet as a whole. But I am still close friends with many people I met through a shared interest in Prince. I wouldn’t say I’m still a friend, or fan, or fam, or whatever the hell the currently-authorized term is, of Prince. And that’s okay.
So, while I’ll miss HQ if it really does disappear into the ether for good, and I’ll always sympathize with my friend Aaron, I’m convinced the ultimate losers will be Prince if this stands. First, the hard-core fanbase in Europe, which I always took as HQ’s core audience, will be pretty offended and discouraged, and I’m sure at least a few of them will defect in disgust. Now, I’ve think some of the HQ (and prince.org, to a lesser extent) users are such diehard fans that I’m convinced Prince could personally come to their house and abuse their puppy in front of them, and they’d still smile and simply stutter out the request for an autograph. For these folks, the closure of any one site, even one as important as HQ, won’t convince them to swear off Prince forever. But it still isn’t good PR, and I can imagine there’s just as many diehards who, like Aaron, will stop to put in the extra effort it takes to keep the community vibrant, which is a shame. A dedicated, excited, vibrant community is what supports Prince through the random silly shit he constantly decides to undertake/say/etc., and still buy everything available and spread the gospel of “you must see Prince in concert before you die”, which is what drives ticket sales… really. Sure, some folks are going to go just to see Purple Rain because they remember it was the song playing the first time they got to second base, but those folks increasingly have kids and decide, in economic downturns especially, to spend their concert-money on other things. This sort of badwill will, I’m convinced, ultimately trickle down to affecting Prince’s bottom line. But then again, it might accelerate his descent into being a permanent fixture at a low-rent Vegas lounge, which would be kind of a fun opportunity for lots of fans, too. Alright, I’m getting off track now, but the point is: I don’t think this is a smart move for Prince, but it’s his move to make.
That’s it, I’m stepping down from the soapbox for now. I support Aaron’s decision, whatever it might be — to bring the site back, or not to, or to change his mind later. If regular HQ visitors want to spend more time here on the org, they’re welcome — I’ll even create a “hardcore fan” forum with more stringent moderation if that’d help keep the community active… there should be someplace for that kind of discussion. We’re here for you, the now or once-, or future-Prince fan. Even if it does benefit Prince’s crazy ass in the process

I’m going to take another shot at moving the .org to the faster server over the holiday, probably starting Sunday night. Expect some downtime! You’ve been warned
Thanks for your understanding!

Just a quick update for y’all… things can move at a snail’s pace around here when it requires my attention to get completed. About a year ago, we asked for people who were interested in helping out with moderating, to apply, and we got a ton of responses. After much discussion among the existing mods, we settled on extended an offer to a few people. Out of those, a few responded positively in email. And then… I never followed up on the last bits of work!
Partly this was because I was so swamped with work, partly it was due to worries over there being little-to-no good way to help get these folks up and running, partly it was just laziness/oversight on my part. The mod team has been asking nicely that I finish this up, and finally today I at least made one step in the right direction, by adding Mars23 on as a mod in several of the highest-traffic forums. He’s been on the org for years, and has been a considerate and helpful member of the community, and I’m excited to have him now help out as a mod — joining the ranks of the few, the proud, the underappreciated prince.org moderators
Anyhow, there’s a “congrats” thread over here if you’d like to say something there, too!

Sorry, as usual, I forgot to take the necessary steps to ensure the chat would keep working on January 1st… I think this is the 5th year in a row that I’ve managed to neglect that! Sorry, it’s all working again now, and thanks very much to luv4u for reminding me!So, aside from that minor glitch, I certainly hope everyone is having a joyous New Year! Personally, 2008 wasn’t a bad year for me — but certainly was tough for a lot of folks. I’m definitely hoping it improves for everyone in ‘09; fingers crossed!Ben

Sorry for the unavailability this morning — turns out I (d’oh!) didn’t update the credit card on file at the hosting provider and they turned off the traffic. All fixed, paid in full, happiness again :)

In an effort to bring some sort of reasoning behind one of our most misunderstood or misconstrued actions, the following should be noted:
Moderation is a process. We need to balance many things when we consider any action taken on a member’s account. Questions we ask ourselves… like, is this being done maliciously? Is it a joke? Can people tell it’s a joke? Have they done this with full knowledge of the rules? Etc.
Some things tend to tread the line of what’s allowed and what’s not. In this case… Alternate Accounts. As stated by Ben, no person may have more than one account active at any one time on the Org. Some people feel the need to create two, three or even more Alternate Accounts than that. We know that most are harmless and most likely utilize this ability to do so to get around the posting limits. Some use them as different personalities. Occasionally we get someone who uses them to harass or post things that shouldn’t be posted. Some are used to troll or bait. Others create Alt Accts to get around being temp banned or permabanned. Some are used to create a “celebrity account” so that they can partake in discussions as that famous person. We know if (for example) Morris Day were going to create an account here, it most likely would not be created as “MorrisDay” with his picture used as an avatar.
Rest assured, we know this is happening and know who the Orgers are. So, why do we allow this to continue when it’s clearly against Ben’s wishes? Most “Alt Accts” are harmless. We take that into consideration and moderate them accordingly.
We, as Moderators, reserve the right to ban any Alt Acct at our discretion – simply for existing. Again, it is against Ben’s wishes.
Not too long ago we had a crop of politically minded Alt Accts pop up to make fun of, or bait/slam the candidates and/or the people who supported them. We discussed their existence amongst ourselves and came up with the decision to delete them all, as it wasn’t worth the effort to continually have to moderate them. We knew they were Alt Accts, and we knew they weren’t the primary accounts of the Orgers who used them. So we took them out of the equation.
So what does all this mean? Here’s a quick break down:
* Alt Accts are not allowed.
* We can/will delete them if/when we’re alerted to wrong-doings from an Alt Acct.
* We could let them continue until other more serious rules are broken under the guise of the Alt Acct.
* This includes Alt Accts in the ChatRoom as well.
* Alt Accts created to get around a temp ban or permaban will be deleted immediately.
* As always, Moderators have final say on any deletions of Alternative Accounts without expectation of an explanation.
Thank you,
June7 on behalf of TheModSquad

Whew. That was fun (not!)
My apologies for our outage for the last 5 days. Not that it was my fault, but I still feel bad about it. I know many of you have missed your “org fix” as one person wrote to me in email. In case you didn’t get the mail I sent out (some people seem not to have — reminder, check the email address the org has on file for you!), we were down starting last Saturday night, due to an electrical fire and subsuquent explosion (!) where our servers are hosted, in Texas, at theplanet.com. This was a catastrophic failure for their power systems, and while things like a normal power cut, would not have caused any problem, an explosion destroying much of their underground wiring, certainly did Over 9,000 servers were affected, approximately 7,000 customers, including, of course, our beloved org. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire and explosion!
The folks at theplanet.com worked round the clock for days to restore power, and finally restored it to all the servers about a day ago. The org wouldn’t come right back up, however, and after some manual intervention on their part, we were able to return to service about 6 hours ago. My thanks to the good folks at The Planet, and I really appreciate everyone’s patience while we waited for them to slog through the repairs. It’s great to be back!!

Two months ago when I started working on moving us to a new server, I had hoped to have everything done within a week. I spent about a week’s worth of effort on getting everything set up and installed, etc., and still wasn’t ready for the crucial last set of steps to actually move the entire site over. I’m going to be working on that some more this week, hopefully even tonight, and try to get us onto the faster equipment by the end of May.
Please understand if the site is down for a while, and it may also take time for your ISP to update their DNS cache (i.e., to point to the new site’s address). Best case, that takes only a few minutes, but worst case, a couple of days.
Anyhow, I’ll try to have meaningful messages posted up on the old site as I make progress.
Ben

All:
Sometime Sunday night (I’m not exactly sure when I’ll get around to this, but probably after 9PM Pacific time), I will be taking the org down for a little while for database maintenance, and one of the critical steps towards moving the site to new (faster!) server. I expect the downtime to only be about an hour. I will try to have a “maintenance” page up during the process, as well.
If all goes well, within a week or so we should be all migrated to the new machine, however, which I think will be a noticeable speed improvement, so it’s all for a good cause!
Thanks for your understanding,
Ben

G’day mates! (See, this can only get classier from here on…)
A reporter for the Melbourne Sunday Age, is trying to get in touch with a few long-time, knowledgeable Australian Prince fans to interview for a piece he’s doing to coincide with Prince’s 50th birthday.
If you’re interested, and think you can speak about all facets of Prince’s career (of course including how much prince.org means to you! No, just kidding… well, sort of ), then drop me a line at ben@prince.org with your phone number and email and I’ll foward it on.
Throw another shrimp on the… ehh, I can’t even force myself to type the rest of that — just help out this reporter if you can,
Ben
