I see what y'all saying....but.... The ONLY CD player I have is in my car...and it skips summin fierce. I have a record player...but its stuck in the house and not portable, and tbh...it gets pretty dusty. I get internet connections virtually everywhere...98 percent of the time they're free or included in my costs of having a phone/data plan. My internet connections are much more portable and reliable than ANY physical media players I have.

.

Bwahahahaha. Yeah sure, whatever.

Seriously: have you never heard of iPods?

Ultimately it's about the music. Let me put it this way, he can open a show with these two new tracks and he will kill it with fans new and old. Play them on a TV show whatever. Now, if he opened with Pancakes Can Wait and Clouds, it would only put people to sleep or make them feel sorry for him. Honestly it had nothing to do with promotion, it was the music.
Bullshit no promotion means no sales. He promoted the hell out Musicology and that was a so-so cd.

Besides the give away's at concerts which counted for 1.4 million sales, musicology sold another 1 million not including the giveaways... So promoting had ALOT to do with that album. That was the last RIAA certified multiplatnium album PRINCE had.

Musicology put PRINCE back in the mainstream for at least that year... It sold over 2 million copies and was the biggest grossing tour earning over $87.4 million. So yes promotion has a lot to do with it, because musically overall Musicology was a very very average album.

And after that free month? We either never listen to it again or pay for it every month for life?

Don't you think people will find away to make copies. Don't you know Prince owns this music and can take it to another service or put out on Cd later. It does not matter since he has been paid upfront and may have money invested in Tidal.

That's what pisses me off - the games. I will get a copy of the album without paying for a subscription to tidal, that's for sure. I'd much rather pay for a download or a CD without having to go on a goose chase for an illegal download. I've said it a few times this week: all I want is the chance to give prince my money in exchange for his music. For owning it, not for 'renting' it off a company which will probably sink before Hitnrun is released... If he announces today that a week or a month after it goes on tidal it will be available to download from wherever he wants to make it available I'll stop complaint at once.

There is as always a total over reaction on here

Tidal will get exclusive rights to the album for the first month perhaps and then it will be released on vinyl and on iTunes.

I am surprised he has gone with Tidal though. I would have thought the new Apple Music streaming service would have been a far better option but there again maybe Jay Z was offerring more of an advance and its all about the money at the the end of the day.

Whatever way I am excited to hear the new album and I will take out my trial with Tidal then cancel it and then buy it and if it isnt released I will download it from somewhere

CHILL OUT !

I'm guessing you won't confirm this, KCOOL--but this sounds almost like someone who maybe, just possibly, isn't all that excited about the actual announcement in absolutely all its apparent details, and so he's chosen to look forward in the hope that a possible "Phase 2" will make it all better?

Well, that still leaves the Spotify song as a peculiar mystery, doesn't it?

Oh, as to my response to the announcement--really? You've got to be kidding me--but I hold out no strong hope for a sensible "buy it" option, even in download form.

I suspect I'll eventually possess it in some form--but I'd prefer to pay him for it (but not just to listen to it as long as his agreement with Tidal holds up--or as long as Tidal holds up--and I certainly don't intend to continue paying for it monthly... that would be ridiculous).

Just keep feeding the bootleggers, Prince. Just keep on alienating your fans.

I'm actually starting to wonder if you and Prince are just punking us in some way--I disagree with you about a lot of the recent music, but his distribution choices and other aspects of his public presentation separate from the actual music continue to stun and amaze me. Unless he's trying to put fans off, I just don't see the point.

Once again, his decisions confound. I don't want to join Tidal to hear new music. Oh well.

It was stated by Jon Bream that P had no idea what Spotify was. I'd love to know who his 'advisors' are.

All that said, I AM glad there's new music coming.

Of course he knew what it was, he had some of his music on there before that meeting. He was asking for advice on new ways to get music out for Judith.

The only one losing out is PRINCE... His new album will not be getting a lot of streams... The fans won't join TIDAL, and besides TIDAL is not even a popular streaming platform compared to Google, Apple and Spotify.

Prince won't be paid by the number of streams for the album. He wouldn't put an album exclusively anywhere unless they paid him upfront. If you don't know how Prince rolls by now.. wink

I'm looking forward to the album, but why would I pay for a service I can only use in the evening on my laptop, regardless of the sound quality it's still through my laptop speakers or headphones, I can't listen to it in the car, I can't listen to it at work. This sucks

I have to join the chorus wholeheartedly on this one. neutral Would anyone pay to see an image of a Picasso painting briefly projected on their wall or a physical copy that will hang there for one to enjoy for as long as one lives?

[Edited 8/7/15 13:59pm]

Trouble with this metaphor is that people kinda do pay to see a painting briefly when they go to museums. And seeing a Picasso at the Met is a lot more cost effective than buying one smile But yeah I take your point, although I don't necessarily need a physical copy myself, but owning an album is imo far preferable to just being able to stream it (I don't mind streaming as a supplement to buying album overall, but not giving people that choice is a terrible idea.)

Anyways, looks like I missed out on the initial revealing of this news by going to a P-Funk concert, so I think I win overall cool

To be fair though, I was already considering pirating whatever new Prince album was going to come out due to my disappointment over the lack of the Purple Rain remaster, so it's kinda neat Prince has made that decision easy for me!

I like how most fans on here are agreeing on this topic. Which says something! Even KCoolMusiq seems to be effected by this!

But the deal with some fans (the ones that ride Prince's dick on any decision he makes), I swear if Prince took a shit in the middle of the road some will still applaud him! "Go Prince! Way to make a demonstration on how free you are! Fuck Warner Bros!"

Talkin' so fast that even they
Don't know what they mean

Of all the things that base a rhyme
How is it that U everytime
Regurgitate the racist lines that keep us apart?

Thank God this ain't Monopoly
U'd make us all go back 2 start

If we never heard about the evils that those before us committed
Then how my dear, tell me now how my dear, tell me now how now would we know

And then the band say

Well we got a racist ass on the board. Confirms some of my suspicions. Every time Prince is working with other black people this bullshit starts. Wake up and and smell the coffee 1. Cd are going away. 2. The planet has more people of color than white. 3. If you do not own something and control your own destiny you going to get got. You may know go back to your racist rant.

I'll have everything released (official or otherwise) on a CD.

That's the way I like it and it makes me feel all warm inside!

My only hope here is that this release might be Tidal's first venture into pay-for downloads and may not just be a members-only streaming option.

But that would make too much sense.

Here is the issue. Believe it or not, most Prince fans don't know what streaming is. I did not until the past couple of months. I had no clue was spotify, tidal, etc was until I signed up for apple music because my iphone basically forced me to and I was forced to learn about streaming services. I never understood the point because I own everything I want anyway. I will sign up with tidal for a month and then buy it when he makes it available for download or physical copy.
