I'd probably join Tidal to listen to a massive amount of previously unavailable P stuff. For this I'll find another way....

ideally there'll be some sort of physical release at some point.

Ah Prince. Always trying things. wink

Nothing against streaming services and I fully support artists being paid for their music. But I will not subscribe to Tidal, as I am not going to use it.

Nah, "Phase Two" will probably involve an internet scavenger-hunt in order for us to hear it

Yeah, but by then he'll have lost out to a lot of illegal downloads.

I´m usually quite a positive fan, but the last few weeks have made me think it´s probably time to just give up. I like the music, but I can´t stand the games. And the article about iTunes being illegal in the UK he linked on Twitter really pissed me off. I have bought everything he´s ever put up for sale. Most albums I´ve bought twice. I think I have paid for Breakfast Can Effing Wait four times, and he still thinks I´m stealing from him if I put his music in my iPhone... This man is a moron, or completely out of touch with reality...

So here is my message to him: Dear Prince, on September the 7th (probably before) I will get your new music. It´s up to you whether you want my money for it or not.

Same here

I see what y'all saying....but....

The ONLY CD player I have is in my car...and it skips summin fierce. I have a record player...but its stuck in the house and not portable, and tbh...it gets pretty dusty. I get internet connections virtually everywhere...98 percent of the time they're free or included in my costs of having a phone/data plan. My internet connections are much more portable and reliable than ANY physical media players I have. I like to take advantage of that rather than shun it.

Do they even sell discman anymore? Is there a CD slot on my phone I don't know about? No worries TBH....I just stick the audio plug from my stereo into my phone or comp and bypass all that physical bs...

I don't understand why people hold on SOOOO hard to older, more difficult ways to listen to music.

Relax, guys. I'm sure this is all a big misunderstanding.

Prince can't possibly be streaming his album on TIDAL. He hates all those artificial ones and zeros...all those bits and bytes. All that digital noise. The Internet is so over.

I understand. I'm usually a positive fan too. I'd say he's more out of touch with reality at this point.. No one manages him right (I don't know Trevor Guy, he's probably a cool dude) but him letting Prince run things uncontrolably and unpredictedly like this is just ridiculous..

But that doesn't mean any of us fans have to give up.. Purple Army is strong, we can deal with his games.

when you think about it, he's stripping away from our freedom when he forces us to go on Tidal. We got to be free as Prince-fans.. and lord knows, Prince knows about being free..

WOW, just read through all the comments and I'm amazed so many people are ANTI-streaming music. It's not as if this is a new concept are anything, plus the cost of $25/mo for lossless audio quality on thousands of albums is great IMHO.

I guess the 21st century is just an uncomforatble place for some....

most people, i think, would rather spend $25/month on whatever they want, not what is made available to them. i'm not gonna bother looking, but i'm sure there ain't shit on tidal i'm interested in hearing. i'll take my $25 to the record store and go home knowing that i want to hear what i purchased. the stooges on tidal? then fuck it.

Once again, a big yeahthat The problem isn't streaming, the problem is being FORCED to join a streaming service in order to hear something. That's the difference.

I'm with EVERY ONE OF YOU who has said F THAT to having to join a monthly service to hear one album that we care about (maybe).

.

But hey, this is what free trials are for.

.

https://go.tidal.com/us/r...cW30/HIFI

.

Sign up for the trial in September. Free lossless listening for 30 days. Make your own rip. Cancel.

.

(that link is for the US only - I'm sure there are similar trials for other countries)

.

Sorry, Prince - like so many others, I'll gladly PAY FOR A DOWNLOAD or PAY FOR A PHYSICAL COPY but won't be roped into a $120+/year committment to be able to stream music, especially from a site run by SINGERS AND PERFORMERS who aren't MUSICIANS.

.

Someone once said FREE THE MUSIC - not SUBSCRIBE TO A DYING STREAMING MUSIC SERVICE.

.

Make a physical copy or download available and my money is yours. I want to rent my music about as much as Prince wants to sign a contract.

.

Glad a new album is on its way. Not at all happy with a $120/year pricetag to hear it. How did we go from putting free albums in $1 newspapers to requiring a subscription to listen?

Damnit...I already wasted my free trial! Plus a couple extra days that they tried to charge me for because I forgot to cancel before I got charged. All I hadda do was send them an email saying I forgot to cancel before I got charged and honestly told them I hadn't used the service since I got charged and they agreed to send me my twenty dollars back in a couple business days. Very agreeable experience... Especially seeing as how EYE was the one that dropped the ball.

It does bother me to be putting money Jay Z's way for some some strange reason...but its not like he gets the whole twenty...that mess gets split up between the people who make what I appreciate in general...ART. Some I like...some I don't like....just keep on making it so I can keep on choosing. It's a HELLUVA lot cheaper than buying some these goddamn CD's. 20 bux buys 1;2 CD....or TWENTY bux can buy all the listening I can bare to a TRUCKLOAD of a whole bunch of kinds of music...old and new...no. Not all...but there sure is an assload of it regardless....for twenty flipping bux? One can't deny its a bargain. Add another....lets say twenty..and I get ez access to damn near ALL music EVER. Back when I was twenty...I would spend 60-80 on music a month....and would get 3-4 CD's.....32-40 songs....I was getting ripped way back when....

I think we all are; at least, it doesn't appear anyone here is excited about Phase 1.

Question: Do you currently subscribe to Tidal? If not, would you pay $25/month (orwhatever Tidal costs) just to "borrow" but not "own" Prince's new album?

I wouldn't. I wouldn't even join Tidal for one month if it meant I could download the album because that would mean I was paying $25 for a download.

Put it another way - what can Prince give me that makes it worth $25 a month/whatever, every month, just to listen to this album?

I've been a fan since he released "Soft and Wet" but I don't get this strategy. It's like he's begging me to get a bootleg copy.

The days of making ANY extra effort to hear new Prince music is LONG over.

If it's not in my local record store,
then I can live without. Not jumping thru hoops for an artist that peaked years ago & the quality of his releases dubious

just another example of prince trying to maintain relevance to a bunch of 6 year olds while his aging/dwindling fan base grows more and more annoyed with his antics.

it's not worth all this. it used to be kind of fun, being a tortured/hard core prince fan. this is just dumb.
