Dr. Dre released his first album in 16 years today. Exclusively on Apple Music. It was bootlegged within minutes of being online. And it's to be expected since he is a co-founder of the service.

But it's definitely the new thing all the superstars are doing.

Like everyone else, I wish there was a way to just exchange money for the album, as I have very little interest in a Tidal subscription.

Prince ought to have a label account with Bandcamp.

But you can buy Dr Dre's album for £9.99 on iTunes. That's all I want. If I can buy it everything else is irrelevant.

Yeah, because Prince has never given Tidal an exclusive before. Oh wait...

I prefer an album or a CD, or a file I can download.

I'm not going to pay whatever Tidal costs just to listen to the new Prince album, unless maybe if the membership includes the ability to download the album so that I own it forever.

Those of us that paid of NPGMC songs that went away when the NPGMC did know what I'm talking about.

The deal with me is this - you sell me something, I own it. I'm not buying a license to listen to something for a finite period of time. If I'm going to spend money on art, I'd better own that art.

I totally agree. yeahthat

Incredible...he just keeps making boneheaded decision after boneheaded decision...Jay-Z is one of these people that will never see a dime from me.

Give me a release date on cd or vinyl, otherwise I'll have to pirate it...

I haven't joined any streaming site and I'm not about to join this one. I bought recent downloads directly from Prince and I would gladly do it again. But I will not join Tidal for one album. Tidal is a sinking ship anyway. So, unless it is offered for sale later as a direct download or a CD--I'm out. confused

Are Tidal the cool kids?

It might generate a couple of music/entertainment website headlines, but like all his recent publicity stunts it'll be tomorrow chip paper and it won't convert in to sales because the public still don't trust his studio output to be anything other than masturbatory water-treading.

They kind of are in terms of the names associated...

Well, so are you. This time he's really fucked up, but you telling us about it is completely meaningless. That's what you get after twelve years (at least) of writing the same again and again do: the one time you are right, it doesn't matter...

I have to join the chorus wholeheartedly on this one. neutral Would anyone pay to see an image of a Picasso painting briefly projected on their wall or a physical copy that will hang there for one to enjoy for as long as one lives?

Prince's fans are all too old to understand streaming, no one will sign up for TIDAL...

Second Prince streaming his whole album only on TIDAL is a big big mistake...

Gee, thanks Prince! If this stays exclusively on Tidal or Titball or whatever this will officially be the first Prince album I won't pay for. And I think you all know what I mean by that. (further obvious hint to follow...)

I love streaming music. I've been a Rhapsody subscriber for 6 years. But I still also BUY albums from my favorite artists. Usually as CDs, sometimes as downloads. And I'm sure as fuck not switching my streaming service just for Prince.

It's not always about streaming vs. not streaming. It's about people being able to access the music in the format they want.

HITNRUN? Yeah, hitting my head on my desk and fucking running out of patience.

Pretty much sums it up. We had our differences years ago, but as time goes on and Prince gets weirder, I consider you a visionary now. Most of your comments are spot on these days and in retrospect... Well...

If we are this annoyed by Prince's later gimmick, saying we won't switch to Tidal, I can't even imagine how much the general public is going to not care. Zero fucks will be given.

WOW, just read through all the comments and I'm amazed so many people are ANTI-streaming music. It's not as if this is a new concept are anything, plus the cost of $25/mo for lossless audio quality on thousands of albums is great IMHO.

I guess the 21st century is just an uncomforatble place for some....

Nah.

Prince has become such a hypocrite. He's complained that he doesn't own his masters but forgets (or doesn't give a crap) that we also want to own the music we pay for. I have Amazon Prime but never bother with their streaming service because I want to own all my music.

I have nearly 32,000 songs in my itunes. Music is as much a part of my life as clothes are and I ain't streaming shit ever. Albums matter, he said. I need to hold that album, mo-fo!

Yes!I will be there AGAIN!
Myself, along with 4 other writers heard his new album late last night during a special “invite-only” session at PP.
I can’t reveal the name of the album(it is NOT “hitnrun”)nor can I give any song titles but I can tell you this album is fierce!
It is a strong return to the one man band style that Prince used so effectively in the 80’s.
There are no special guest stars at all …it’s all Prince with “Joshua” listed as executive producer. There are naughty moments, there is lots of guitar and most importantly there are GREAT SONGS!
I hope he spins it again Saturday night for us!
I need this album in my collection,it is hands down the best album Prince has ever made.
I’m quite serious.

This is Jeffery,I was sitting alongside you and Sherri from Baltimore last night at the listening party! So great to catch up with you guys again!
I am in complete agreement with you about the new Prince album we heard last night! It is his best,no doubt about that.
This album seemingly oozed from the speakers..it was deeep, fat and kind of filthy!lol!
I was not expecting that at all and I hope he lets us hear it again Saturday!
See ya there

Remember in Baltimore when he said something along the lines of wanting to come back and stay in an hotel that's black-owned? Prince is supporting a venture started by Jay Z that echoes his own philosophy about artists getting a fairer deal in an industry that screws them every day?

I may not be pleased that I'd have to join Tidal to hear his album, but in terms of being true to his beliefs, this deal shows he means business. This is most likely happening with WB's full blessings with Prince emphasizing his commitment to a solution that incudes supporing black-owned businesses.

Will I be joining Tidal? Maybe if I found out all his remastered albums are now on it.
