I agree. How long have we listened to Prince preach about freedom? And now he'll release an album on a service that will only allow you to listen to the album for as long as you pay a monthly fee. Who would you say are the "slaves" now? . I've listened to and supported Prince for 35 years. I want to support him now. I think he continues to find new ways to make that very hard.

.

All Prince cares about is Prince.

.

When he talks about Gwen Stefani not being free, that too is Prince caring about himself, because her not being free means that he cannot profit from her celebrity and fame by releasing a single that features her voice somewhere buried in the mix but her name and picture prominently on the cover, without her record company agreeing to it. And they aren't agreeing to it, because they're using her name and fame to re-launch her band and they're investing a truckload of money and they don't want some washed-up former rockstar to profit off their investments for him to promote his comeback attempt.

.

It really isn't hard.

Like many on this thread, streaming is not for me. I hope for a CD release but if there isn't, there's not much I can do about buying a copy to keep for myself.

I would hope that this is a continuing evolution and Prince & Co. come around to realise that they need both things in parallel: streaming for those who prefer streaming and physcial media for those that want to pay for it. I reckon we CD & vinyl buyers would pay 2 or 3x the normal cost for a deluxe or super deluxe, and the market can be tested with Pledge Music or similar.

I think this time he's going to get a large % of a small number, rather than a small % of a larger number. So it might not feel like a win.

Anyway, lets look forward to the tracklist.

"Super hardcore Prince fans that know every song he's ever recorded - we refer to them as 'The Purple Collective' or 'The Purple Army' - this album is absolutely for them, because it's super funky," reported 3RDEYEGIRL. "There are a lot of experimental sounds. It's just hit after hit and definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound." Prince worked with co-producer Joshua Welton on HITNRUN – Welton was also a co-producer on Prince's ARTOFFICIALAGE album, released late last year.

In other words, "It's garbage." razz

Well, so are you. This time he's really fucked up, but you telling us about it is completely meaningless. That's what you get after twelve years (at least) of writing the same again and again do: the one time you are right, it doesn't matter...

.

There was an entire thread about "what if Prince would set up his own streaming service" recently and all sane persons involved pointed out that it would be a massive failure. Yet here's someone proposing that exact same idea (in the bit I responded to). I mean, don't they know about LotusFlow3r.com? Where do Prince fans get this insane idea that Prince has a large enough fan base to support such idiocy?

.

Also: I've bene proven right over and over again. I was proven right about the first version of NPGMC. I was proven right about Rave. I was proven right about LotusFlow3r.com. Etcetera etcetera.

But you lot wanna pretend I'm not.

.

You lot counter me saying that he doesn't promote albums when he doesn't play its songs live by reminding me that at one concert he played half a minute of one of the songs from the album.

.

You lot keep insisting Prince sells out gigs whenever he turns up anywhere, but the reality is that he's had some massive flops in recent years.

.

You lot were all over the "announcement" of this album some weeks ago and claimed it was goign to be released in early August, and as it turned out... nope, yet another time you failed to learn your lesson, you still fell for the vague hype. "Stare" (or whatever that album's name was) was going to be released this Summer. Ain't happening. Last November we were goign to get that NPG album, you lot said. Didn't happen. Hell, even this upcoming exclusive stream isn't exactly a "real" release, now is it? Or are you goign to the record shop anyway, "just in case Prince will surprise us and deliver physical CDs"? We've had these phony non-announcements for more than 15 years, and time and time again you lot pretend they're written in stone, whereas in fact they often contain very little information.

Remember in Baltimore when he said something along the lines of wanting to come back and stay in an hotel that's black-owned? Prince is supporting a venture started by Jay Z that echoes his own philosophy about artists getting a fairer deal in an industry that screws them every day?

I may not be pleased that I'd have to join Tidal to hear his album, but in terms of being true to his beliefs, this deal shows he means business. This is most likely happening with WB's full blessings with Prince emphasizing his commitment to a solution that incudes supporing black-owned businesses.

.

Let's see: "Tidal was launched in 2014 by Norwegian/Swedish public company Aspiro."

.

Norway and Sweden? Doesn't quite sound black to me. Let's look at Aspiro:

.

The company was founded in 1998 by Jörgen Adolfsson, Christer Månsson and Klas Hallqvist.

.

And also:

.

Jay Z's courting of Aspiro's all-star team began just ahead of the Grammys in a top-secret meeting in Pasadena which brought West, Daft Punk, Minaj, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Jack White and Madonna together. Billboard has learned that each artist was offered a 3 percent stake in the company in order to secure exclusives

.

Didn''t know they were black.

.

Prince is with Tidal because he thought it would generate press and because they offered him a lot of money. That's all there is. Note that he gave a song to Spotify mere days ago, because he's obviously that much into "supporting black-owned businesses".

What album is being referred to? "HITNRUN"? Or a 2nd album? (And do you live in the Northern Hemisphere? Because September 7 falls within "regular Summer" to those mortals in the US...but perhaps you're referring to another album/date/hemisphere/solar system...)

Same here, more or less. I bought PE, listened to it twice and have no idea where I left the CD tbh. AOA I listened to ten times or so and is still in my car. The digital sigles like RNRloveaffair, octopus something, menstrual cycle are scattered on devices and I can't bother to look 'm up and burn it on a CD.

I like streaming. No wait, I LOVE streaming services.

I'm not switching to Tidal though just to listen to 1 measly Prince album.

Put up a download and I'll give prince my ten bucks or whatever, no problems.

THIS. Like I said above, I've been paying for Rhapsody for 6 years. I'm not switching to Tidal just because Prince has a new gimmick. Just let me buy your fucking album. CD, download, whatever. I like to rip my albums into iTunes at a higher sound quality than iTunes downloads. So I buy CDs.

All the people saying "look at all you old people afraid of streaming blah blah blah" are just being dicks. Yes, a few people are anti-streaming. But others are raising issues you ignore. For example, music frequently disappears from streaming services. It's like Netflix, see. I own copies of my favorite movies. Because shit comes and goes from Netflix. Same with music. If you were a Taylor Swift fan and depended on Spotify to listen to her music, well. Sorry. Say Tidal collapses in a year (or less) or Prince pulls his music from there. Or say you want to listen to an exclusive he gives to another streaming company that's willing to pay him upfront a year from now. What will you do, sign up for another service? Let's see...I want to listen to HITNRUN, so I gotta use my Tidal app. But I also want to listen to BULLSHITFUTURETITLE, which is only on Apple Music. Shit, that's $20 a month.

Impress you...Negro pleez. You have to show me you have any taste in music. All I hear is your rantings and complaints as it relates to marketing and distribution. Prince is not predictable, but I would take his 37-year artistic journey over any other artist with a similar tenure. Give me some names. And the fact that you deny some of the great P music since 1989 shows your tin ear.

I'm 43, been a fan since the 1999 album was new.

.

I buy actual CDs, but I also download where needed and I use Spotify every day at work. Also, I use video streaming sites too - at home and on my phone.

.

My point of all of that is: we are not arguing about technology or about streaming, not at all.

.

On the surface, it might appear that way, but in reality it's about:

.

1. Being forced to stream -- and forced to join a service that we don't want to join.

2. Not being able to "own" the actual album in at least some format (even if it's a download)

.

Only Prince plays these games. The album should be as widely released as possible . . . not the opposite.

As I said before, I most likely wouldn't listen to the other 'artists' on Tidal, so I have no interest in subscribing.

Unless Prince releases this via some other media (CD, Itunes, 3rdeyetunes) I'll be getting it 'illegally.'

Despite Prince not liking old people, he might need to accept the fact that a good portion (the majority?) of his fan base has 'grown up' along with him & doesn't use whatever the lastest hip distribution channel is.

These are the people who do support him, buy his latest shit, jump through his latest hoop & continue to follow him.

And I have to admit, if Tidal was just some halfcocked Prince streaming service, I probably WOULD fall for it & subscribe.

But it's not & I have no interest in paying for a bunch of shit that I won't listen to anyway.

Trust Prince's vision for his music? Or have faith that he'll find the best deal for himself? I know which of those two he's been pursuing. It's why he's never had a lasting deal with anyone for 20 years. And that is fine and his choice - we all gotta look out for #1, and he's earned the right to do as he pleases. He does keep finding unique ways to get his music out, but that doesn't mean it's the best thing for those who appreciate his music.
.
Speaking of deals - what's Prince's relationship like with any of the organizations he's used in the past 20 years to distribute an album? Prepare for a Prince vs Jay-Z feud. Sure seems likely based on history.
.
As for what example is being set by luv4u - all she did was summarize the overwhelming majority opinion in this thread. What else would you have a moderator do? Tell 80%+ of posters they're ignorant and to go away?

OFC... In order to be a FAN/FAM you have to research and study as much as BART has... So in the end he's just the biggest HYPOCRITE... He's read all the books, researched every little thing about him, yet he's not a FAN/FAM... Sorry BART go get some excercise besides spreading "THE TRUTH" here. You're outdated anyway.
