I've never used a streaming service before but I was told that if you paid for Spotify you could download the music and put it on a Cd.

I hate the idea of just streaming it, seems a bit limiting to where you can listen to it.

You know...it just says Tidal will have the exclusive on the STREAM of the album, this doesn't mean it won't be available for download, CD or vinyl elsewhere...just not streaming elsewhere.

What is on my mind is...is this through WB or did that deal have an escape clause if they didn't sell enough of AOA?

Surely the WB deal that turned over ownership of his masters MUST have had an iron-clad way for WB to make some ca$h or they would have never inked the deal. They obviously knew in today's music sales climate that neither AOA or PE were going to big sellers.

Obviously a Purple Rain brick wall master is delayed at least until its 35th anniversary...LOL

Did anyone seriously think that was going to happen?

I love Prince, and I think his albums from the last ten years are great, contrary to many opinions, (the least solid being the Lotusflow3r 3 cd set...could've made a solid 1 cd out of it, but that's ok-at that price it was like getting b-sides and demos for free), but lyrically his last 2 "singles" are lacking, almost demo-y, but musically good...

Prince changes his mind like the wind shifts direction...

This streaming thing is really freaking people out here. Like it's a foreign concept or something. Does this mean the people who post here are all over 30?

Heck when AOA was being discussed the first thing I wondered here was how it would be released. Whether it would be on physical media like in ye olden days of yore. I do not know of anyone even having anything to play cds on. I don't even know anyone who buys physical movies or have a dvd player anywhere other than dusty in a box somewhere.

Streaming is here to stay and the sooner people get over any hang ups the better for you.

You can download(play offline) from Tidal, once you have stop paying your monthly membership, you will lose access to any music you downloaded from Tidal.

With all that said. It won't be hard to find this album available to download for free within the hour it is released on Tidal. Not that I want it free, but when you make an exclusive deal with the streaming service I don't use. You really leave me no choice but to download it from a file sharing service. I would pay for it if was on iTunes, even if it wasn't offered on Apple Music. I'm assuming Prince is making his money upfront on this album. If not in an unconventional method probably...like Lotusflower, Plant Earth, Musicology and 20Ten. So he gets paid regardless.

I'm really questioning the exsistence of TIDAL by years end. They really seem to be struggling.

Thanks Bonnie.

I can see some benefits of a streaming service, but for albums I really like I would want to buy the album to own forever.

I'm a Prince fan since "1999" in 1983.. wink

I am nearly 50 yrs old.. right...

All I need to have is the Prince music as a hard copy in my collection, on my Pc, and in my iTunes & my iPod..

Tidal does not allow that afaik.

Why is that so difficult to understand..???

I know plenty of people who still buy CDs and DVDs (myself included). No I don't own a CD player, I listen to all my music on an iPod, but I like to have a hard copy, so that when my laptop breaks I still own the music I bought. Not really a difficult concept to grasp....

Being a multi millionnare doesn't mean anything anymore these days... Prince has bills just like anyone else and cutting deals like this one entitles him the freedom to create more music at his on pace...

Paisley park can't be a cheap place to run... Dozens if not more employees on payroll at all times, Flying the NPG and other musicians/artists in and out of Mpls all the time, property and income taxes...

The more people make the more they usually have to spend... So I actually am happy he is making money so that he retains his musical freedom which in return he can share with us...

And most of the titles I did buy from new in a record shop.... wink

I guess over the years since 1983 I have bought/ spent on music by Prince around 50.000-60.000 Danish Kroner (maybe as much as $ 10.000).

All I am asking is that the new album is released on a CD. Of course I will gladly suppert Prince and buy his music.

(I am only downloading any music illegal, in case it is unavailable)

I'm over 30 and use Spotify every day, i'm not changing to Tidal to fit in with whatever short-sighted deal Prince struck with Jay-Z

TIDAL have honored Us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows Us to continue making art in the fashion We’ve grown accustomed 2

I assume this means money upfront, which is what Prince always wants and Jay Z can afford to do. Jay Z is interested in growing his userbase so it makes sense to him. Like all of Prince's wacky release ideas lets see the other party do it twice though!

Except many of us won't do what we think is the right and moral thing to do....pay for the music.

I'm happy to line his pockets legally and I'm happy for him to make squillions but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone whould sign up to Tidal solely to get one album that they won't own outright. That's why a great number of us will get it for free elsewhere.

If P makes more money releasing his album this way than if he released it on numerous formats then it's good business sense. If not, it sucks all round.

Be that as it may, artists still release LPs and CDs, whether young and upcoming bands or stars like Joss Stone or Keith Richards. CDs aren't dead yet. I've got nothing against streaming, but as a customer, I want to decide for myself how to hear music. And if I want to just listen, there's radio and youtube, which doesn't cost $10 or 25 a month.

Same here

I see what y'all saying....but.... The ONLY CD player I have is in my car...and it skips summin fierce. I have a record player...but its stuck in the house and not portable, and tbh...it gets pretty dusty. I get internet connections virtually everywhere...98 percent of the time they're free or included in my costs of having a phone/data plan. My internet connections are much more portable and reliable than ANY physical media players I have. I like to take advantage of that rather than shun it. Do they even sell discman anymore? Is there a CD slot on my phone I don't know about? No worries TBH....I just stick the audio plug from my stereo into my phone or comp and bypass all that physical bs... I don't understand why people hold on SOOOO hard to older, more difficult ways to listen to music.

Having a physical copy of the music isn't a difficult way to listen to music at all. I have a physical copy of almost all of my music. I buy cds or and then I upload them onto my back-up drive. If it's a boot, I downloadit, burn it, and then upload it to my back up drive. I also load all my music onto one of my 160gb Ipod Classics.

I joined Spotify so the need of downloading from dubious places has disappeared. And I like it.

I will not change streamprovider so P will have to make an exclusive deal with me 4 me ever hearing this Hidden Rum biggrin

At this stage in my life P is a good exercise in letting go and moving on...
In the end it would be nice to see this album surface on the Spot.

True, we were there when music stores had LPs and later CDs. We were there when napster and torrent sites were so new, nobody knew what hit them and there was no legislation. We were there when Youtube was totally free. We are not used to pay for internet and we will keep on finding ways to never rent music.

Radio is the only streaming service I listen to smile

.

What nonsense is this. BDs and DVDs and CDs and vinyl still sell in huge numbers.

.

Hell, why do you think torrents etc remain so popular? Because people don't want to rely on shitty services and hope for the best. Each day I see people bitching about series X or movie Y not being on Netflix or whatever streaming service they subscribe to. Ditto music not being on Spotify. Hey, there's an easy solution for that: just have physical product or rips of said product at hand.

I just love how famz continue to defend Prince's shitty business decisions with the most ludicrous reasons.

.

Lemme get started on debunking your nonsense by givign a couple of links. This and this and this and this etc. That's just a small selection of upcoming releases. You might notice that these are box sets and deluxe releases for artists that have sold a fraction of what Prince has sold. Yet somehow it is economically viable for those releases to exist, but Prince cannot release his albums on CD (or heaven forbid, vinyl).

.

Sure, PP costs a lot to run. Wanna know how you can fund that? With a steady stream of income. Not by searching for ad-hoc deals that pay you millions if you're lucky.

.

But apparently I'm an "armchair manager" who doesn't know anything, while Prince is obviously a business genius who for some reason now has struck a deal with a desperate and rapidly failing streaming service.
