Prince Inks Exclusive Deal With TIDAL To Release Much Anticipated New Album, HITNRUN

NEW YORK, Aug. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Multi-platinum music icon Prince, and global music and entertainment platform TIDAL, today confirmed that the next release from the entertainer will be exclusively on TIDAL on September 7, 2015.

The upcoming release, the experimental, HITNRUN, was first announced by his band, 3RDEYEGIRL, on BBC radio late last month, following the release of the critically praised first single, "HARDROCKLOVER". Minutes after the song was released on July 1st, critics raved with The Guardian saying, "Prince is back to his old sensual self 'ripping jeans' and 'making women scream' on this minimal slow jam." Billboard called the single "A dreamy rock song", and Rolling Stone described it as simply "Wild".

"Super hardcore Prince fans that know every song he's ever recorded - we refer to them as 'The Purple Collective' or 'The Purple Army' - this album is absolutely for them, because it's super funky," reported 3RDEYEGIRL. "There are a lot of experimental sounds. It's just hit after hit and definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound." Prince worked with co-producer Joshua Welton on HITNRUN – Welton was also a co-producer on Prince's ARTOFFICIALAGE album, released late last year.

The Prince/TIDAL partnership has been in the works for some months, but was quickly cemented out of mutual admiration and respect and a profound belief in artists' rights. The relationship began in May with TIDAL live streaming the first hour of Prince's RALLY 4 PEACE concert in Baltimore. TIDAL hosted live audio of the event and matched funds for donations made on TIDAL.com.

The music icon stated, "After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at TIDAL recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put in2 their craft 2 achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry. Secondly, TIDAL have honored Us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows Us to continue making art in the fashion We've grown accustomed 2 and We're Extremely grateful 4 their generous support. And lastly, in the tech-savvy, real-time world We all live in 2day, everything is faster. From its conception and that one & only meeting, HITNRUN took about 90 days 2 prepare its release. If that's what freedom feels like, HITNRUN is what it sounds like."

JAY Z added, "Prince has always been a visionary, a free-thinker. We're honored to offer his breadth of work, "1999," "Purple Rain," etc., music that has inspired so many, on TIDAL. We're also excited to be the home for his new upcoming album, HITNRUN. Both Prince and TIDAL share the belief that all creatives should have the opportunity to speak directly to those that love and support them. This partnership with Prince represents TIDAL's philosophy in its truest form, a 1 to 1 connection and direct delivery of artistry to the world."

PRINCETIDALPrince’s new album HITNRUN will be a Tidal exclusiveWRITTEN BY FACT TEAM ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 7 2015Prince's new album HITNRUN will be a Tidal exclusive
The album is due out on September 7.

Prince will release new album HITNRUN as a Tidal exclusive. His band, 3RDEYEGIRL, announced the project last month, describing it as an album that “definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound.”

The album is TIDAL’s first significant exclusive and follows Prince’s removal of his music from all streaming services except for TIDAL (not counting that Spotify single). Previously, TIDAL live-streamed part of Prince’s Rally 4 Peace concert in Baltimore, matching donations made on its website.

“After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at TIDAL recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put in2 their craft 2 achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry,” Prince says in a statement.

“Secondly, TIDAL have honored Us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows Us to continue making art in the fashion We’ve grown accustomed 2 and We’re Extremely grateful 4 their generous support. And lastly, in the tech-savvy, real-time world We all live in 2day, everything is faster. From its conception and that one & only meeting, HITNRUN took about 90 days 2 prepare its release. If that’s what freedom feels like, HITNRUN is what it sounds like.”

Earlier this year, Andrew Friedman wondered if Tidal is a terrible business proposition or another smart move by Jay-Z.

I thought I read somewhere that Jay Z backed out of Tidal... Might not even be a Tidal left by Sept 7 wink

I guess I'll have to use that free month trial after all... I hope they sell downloads too somewhere else though... confused

So my speculations were right... It was a deal with TIDAL after all...

I noticed Phase 1 underneath... Do you think he will release another album maybe the Free Urself album??

No one uses TIDAL... Don't know why he doesn't just go back to the more popular streaming servies like Spotify.

In an odd and unintentional way, Prince is a lot like Pearl Jam in the sense that he encourages his fans to bootleg his stuff.

Only Pearl Jam explicitly allow it while Prince brings it on himself with these stupid distribution decisions.

Hmmm... Tough one... As usual I want to hear new Prince music. But I really detest the concept of streaming music for two reasons.

You have to be online to listen, so either you need wifi or it will cost you a scheissload of cell phone provider data.

You have no physical disc or whatever, it is just there, somewhere...

I knew Prince made a deal with TIDAL... Said it all along. It's obvious Jay-Z, Beyonce and PRINCE have a close friendship... PRINCE always does deals with people who are his "friends/fans" The bad thing about this deal is once again it is not as mainstream as the other streaming platforms, he should have just let it stream on all platforms and put it on iTunes, that's the easiest way...

So now Prince fans have to join TIDAL just to here his new album?

Like a lot of potential buyers, if it really is only available as a stream on Tidal, I'll just download it illegally. Shame, cos I'm generally really against doing that, but I'm not subscribing to another streaming site for one album which I won't even have a physical copy of.

All that missed revenue, Prince.

No, we are not complaining. We are complaining the fact that most people don't have TIDAL, and is it really worth the monthly cost just to listen to a new Prince album...

apart from the actual music (hardrocklover) which is really good,

i just want to cry about everything regarding this album, from the

title, to the artwork, to the 'distribution'.

why can't prince just have his own website where he sells albums

or just put his stuff up on itunes. i'm sure that as a free agent he

can give an album to itunes and have them put it up in less than

2 weeks. come on now. sad

the only slightly interesting this about this news is the "phase 1"
subtitle, which could mean more new music, but also conjures a

lot of new questions, without answering or commiting to anything falloff

Yes, they still buy CDs. Or vinyl. Or downloads. SOME fucking format that they actually own without joining a streaming service. Can you understand or are you too hilarious yourself?

What I expect will probably happen is that Tidal will get the album exclusively for a very limited time. Like a month or so. Then it will become available to buy in a physical format.

.

And, like someone else mentioned, Tidal is circling the drain at the moment . . . so who knows what will happen. I won't be joining Tidal just to hear this album.

No sane person will join TIDAL just to get a new Prince album for God knows how long it will even be up on Tidal...

Prince should've made it available on all streaming services, on iTunes, and release it on a physical copy cd and vinyl...

Prince just keeps making bad decisions... Maybe I agree with BART sometime's... Prince just confuses us...

well, it might be hilarious, but most of prince's loyal record BUYING public want to do

just that- buy his new album.

i don't like streaming, i don't want to, even if that means i'm an old fashioned dino at

37. i don't give a f*ck.

besides, i'm tired of jumping through hoops for prince just because he shops is disc

to wherever he gets a couple million $ as an advance before selling a single copy so
he can give them the album and then forget all about it.

how many times can this process repeat?

what's wrong with releasing an album on itunes? or on your own website?

and not every young person or band is all into streaming, a lot of bands who are in

complete control decide to release physical options, both cd and vinyl, lossless files,

limited editions etc etc. and you can all buy them on their freakin' website.

i have truly NEVER heard any artist moan about advances and seen mention of them

dropping a new album WITHOUT a distribution deal in place.

what prince is doing these days is nothing like what other 'free' artists do, who are all

about the music. he just goes to whomever offers him the most money for a few days

of exclusivity, before turning around to another direction once again and burning yet

another bridge.
