The fact is, Prince is only about ego and money not about great music anymore.

Deal with it.

That's not a fact, it's an opinion, and one that I (and many other people) wholeheartedly disagree with.

"Rich Friends" is a good song. It's not the most amazing song ever, big fucking deal. Some of the songs on "20TEN" are his best in years - and THAT is far closer to being a fact because MOST people here agree with that notion. (I'm talking about tracks like Lavaux, Laydown, Beginning Endlessly and Future Soul Song that have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from most of the fan community).

So that dispels your notion of Prince not being about great music.

Ego and money? I really don't think you're qualified to assert such a statement without knowing Prince personally. Elisa recently posted a Facebook update called Prince an "angel" that rescued her, or words to that effect. Does that sound like a man who only cares about money and himself? She knows Prince. YOU don't.

So tell me who I'm more likely to believe on this one.

^ Like I said before, take a look at the threads on this song and count how many have said they like it and how many not. I have read both threads and I am confident that the vast majority does not like it.

As for the rest you do not have to know Prince personally, only to have been a fan for a while to know he used to value quality music above money and ego. You by the way are making this personal as well, just like tricky and truth44.

No need.

As for Prince. When I listen to his new work, even including the new song 'Compassion' I really don't hear that. I don't hear no soul, no true emotion in it. What I do hear tho' more and more, is an artist reacting to his fans. And it's mostly not positive, as in songs like No more candy and PFunk. Actually rather derisive itself, as well as arrogant, pompeous and contemptuous. You can hear it too in Rich Friends and some songs on 20ten like Everybody loves me.

What I have been saying all along in this thread is that it has become apparant that Prince values money and that ego more than putting really great art out.

we agree, trem, in so far as our personal opinions can meet, but for me it is the difference between demonizing his intentions, and understanding why this is happening.

you have to consider a whole range of factors when assessing his current work, according to our subjective opinion. there's a deeper reason why he seems to be just 'going through the motions'.

i dont hear sincerity in his current work either. its like he's sitting on the surface of himself, instead of coming from that much deeper, and much more real place he used to.

look at his life trem, all 30 years of it, and not just the career aspect of it, but the personal side of it too. this is what i mean about taking a step back and trying to understand, rather than accuse.

i'm not suggesting prince is a saint who has been grossly misunderstood and under-appreciated, but there is goodness and sincerity in him that, in my opinion, has been pummelled out of him by a lot of different things.

it takes a compassionate and saintly attitude to really have some compassion for him trem, i'm just suggesting we should at least try, because as far as i can see, our negativity as a fan base has played a part in where he is at now.

yes, his ego and love of money, and all the things that fame implies, are also a factor in where he is at now, but some would even say he's doing alright, considering he is 52, institutionalized to the endth degree, and probably broken-hearted, acting like he aint.

should he get the sympathy vote? i dont know mate. but at the very least he still deserves our respect.

take it easy trem, i hear you brother. heart

You both make excellent posts. I agree with Tremolina. I'm compassionate enough to understand where Robinhood is coming from but Prince must be respectful to receive respect. His intentions may be good and he may mean well but it's fair to say Prince also does inconsiderate and disrespectful things to others. I don't know what it's going to take to make Prince snap out of the spell.

he may feel he deserves to be respected based soley on his achievements and talents. the times he has treated people poorly is not so much an indication of his true nature as it is the work of his ego, imo.

our ego is not who we really are. not yours, mine, nor anyone else's. it is purely a defensive and false ID that we are conditioned to develop as a result of trying to survive in an apparently cruel world.

depending on how strong the ego is, it can be very difficult for some to let it go, and act from the place of our true nature.

even when the ego is dropped, it can take many many years for us to discover what our true nature really is, and to come from that place automatically.

some may read our posts (trems and mine) and regard them as a put down on prince, but it is quite the contrary.

objective observation, while considering a broader picture, according to personal perspective, is not necessarily an attempt to hinder or harm, or patronize or belittle.

that may be the view of the person we are speaking about, and the view of his yes-people, who might not be open to accepting even the remotest glimpse of reality.

trem mentioned prince's songs, apparently directed to his fans, negative songs, bite-back songs, retaliatory songs. these songs are the work of the ego, which lashes out, like a child might when it doesnt get its own way.

other times, those types of songs might also be a form of righteousness, like "you dont have to like my music, but at least show me the respect i deserve as a musician."

honestly, i dont know why he even bothers writing bite-back songs. he's old enough to be the better man and just ignore hateful and belittling comments.

i watched the bergen clips by the way, he's putting on an act. hamming it up big time. from my simple view, he's not being real, and hasnt for a while now.

but try telling that to someone who gets thousands of people cheering for him, and yes-people kissing his ass all the time, or pretending not to, saying what they think they should,

posing with their cell phones and gucci shopping bags, addicted to their prestige by association with him.

ultimately it doesnt phase me one way or the other. he'll live his life the way he wants to and write the music he wants to write, but i prefer to be understanding at this point.

that being said, if he says something really stupid like 'the internet is dead' or serves his fans with cease and desists, i'll be among the 1st to speak out.

but its no big deal. his facade crumbles when looked upon by honest eyes.

Robin, I hear you too. I express my thoughts sharply, but they are not ill intended. On the contray even. I am simply a person that once was truly moved by the musical greatness of this artist. Now I am truly moved that it seems to be gone and I just want to express that.

As a long time fan I was there at the beginning of "the dawn". I experienced the Crystal ball and 1-800 NEW FUNK dramas, the fansite and fanmagazine lawsuits, the "love4oneanother" and "join the collective" phase and the controversial release of the Rainbow Children. I joined the first 2 years of the club, but year 2 ended in a fiasco. After that, I didn't join anymore but just watched how more and more fans were scared off with every new inception of his ideas of "freedom" and how to form a "fan community" on the web. When lotusflower was suddenly pulled after 6 months of no new material and "the internet dead", whose fault was it?

Layitdown is track no 77 on 20ten. It has the only really strong beat on the album, but is obivously only put there as a reference to the 77$ paid by thousands of his fans that expected some more for that kind of buck by the self proclaimed "Purple Yoda from the heart of Minnesota". An artist, that feels good about himself and his actions, doesn't reacts like that to his fans. Even when he strongly disagrees with their complaints and the tone used against him. Nopr does he do things like release an obligatory 4th album called C-note, nor "Xpectations" instead of the original "Xenophobia". Nor songs with anti fan themes like No more Candy and PFUNK.

There isn't any other artist out there, to my knowledge, that does these kinds of things. That uses his talent, his livelihood, his music, for such destructive matters of the ego.

This moves me because Prince is such a great musical talent. He may even be one of the few really great ever. His talent should not be wasted on ego centric songs used to battle his fans, that in the end have always supported him for so many years. Nor should it be flushed down the toilet with a quickly produced album of some scraped together songs, just to get a million dollar for it from some newspaper.

His talent deserves better. He deserves better. His fans deserve better. Music itself deserves better.

And maybe you are too invested in what Prince does or doesn't do. Have you ever stopped to think about that? Prince is a flawed man just like every other human being that exists or ever has. He is not going to please you because you are putting him on a pedestal that should only be reserved for someone like Jesus (if he even existed). Maybe part of Prince's frustation stem from the fact that no matter what he does some portion of the fan base will be mad and disapointed.

U think all the negativity thrust his way doesn't affect him? Since he is a human being it has too. Even Jesus was broken on the cross. Everything Prince gives is basically a gift we can either accept or deny. "Rich Friends" is a gift. No one was asked to pay for it. Yet we have actual so-called fans who seem to actually be mad because it doesn't live up to the level they feel Prince has to be on to be worthy. Take a step back people and think a little. Prince does not owe any of us greatness and we are free to completely ignore his very existence if we please.

Like I've always said.... if you absolutely hate everything he does now, why not move on? Prince has the right to change his music and his message. His music now is much like a President. You're not going to please everyone. No one thing will bring everyone together. For those who still like everything he does and evolve to each new creation does not mean that we are crazy. We may be just as unique as he is with our taste in music. Are we guilty of something? No. To assume that we as fans will jump for joy if he recorded his farts is totally ridiculous.

I've been on this site a lot of years and have only seen one person who says they hate all his new music. I believe he personally has a grudge against Prince and that should be fairly obvious. Anyone else saying that only does it to get a rise out of you guys and you all continuously fall for it.

Continue to say: why don't you all leave if you don't like anything. You continue to invite the negativity.

There are plenty of artists I enjoy that others here don't. It does not bother me in the least and I don't waste my time responding to those types of posts in those threads.

People are here because simply, they can be. Some may not dig his latest imput but are still fans of the earlier stuff that still makes them, guess what? Fans.

And BTW, I don't think Tremolina has to qualify his opinion by saying "I believe" or anything else like that. It is obvious he is speaking his own thoughts. I have zero idea why people are reading his thoughts as if he is stating them as fact.

what cracks me up is when people will say "well if u don't like his new music, then why are u here?' or "u must be drinking the kool aid if u like his new music" and "only his old music is worth listening 2" blah blah blah

so i didn't like planet earth at all, i don't really like 20ten but yet is anyone gonna tell me 2 stay away from this site? lawd ..i seriously have taking a stand and say i will not see prince live in concert anymore cause he doesn't play enough of the new music 4 my taste. now just because i may not like his latest material doesn't mean i don't support the fact that he should do these songs live.

but this the org right? u have 2 be either this or that which is not this

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Fans.

Exactly. Those to the extreme on both sides are what truly ruin this site.

Where have I EVER said that I "hate all his new music"?

I do not "hate" his new music at all. I find it simply sad that he doesn't value quality anymore like he used to.

See that's the problem with you guys. You always play it dirty. "Defend" Prince all you feel you may need to, but don't put words into my mouth.

I meant the usual people here who do complain about all his new music. But no one is putting words in your mouth. You are the one putting words in Prince's mouth by saying that he doesn't value quality music anymore. One would have to be a mind reader to do that, and as far as I know, there are none here. smile

I am not doing that either. See, this is why this site sucks. I am not anybody who hates all his new music, nor am I somebody who is constantly attackin him or whatever you think I am doing.

I am simply expressing my mind and feelings on a couple of issues, mainly the QUALITY of his latest output and how its obvious to me that he doesn't value that so much anymore. Yet you, tricky, militant and a couple of others have attacked me, personally, for what I have written here. You put words in my mouth all the damn time and you approach with nothing but venom, as if I am some kind of sickness you need to protect prince from.

I see you guys do that very often with other people here too, which leads me to the question what you guys are still doing here, if you "hate" it so much here (using the words you would use)

There are a million opportunities to create a "positive" website where none of these people have to read any of this stuff but they continue to not do it. The Org has always been this way with both positive and negative. But, instead of going somewhere else, like they suggest others do, they stay here to enjoy the drama they help to create. They create negativity in the nastiness they spew against others who don't share their opinions. And, it will continue to be hilarious to me that many of the so-called positive ones continue to buy and share bootlegs of Prince's music when they know he has been railing against that for years. Oh, the hilarity and hypocrisy. lol

2 words for this song: awe full.

He should just stop doing studio albums. The drum tracks are painfully lame. His live performances are head and shoulders above anything he's done in studio for a while.

Methinks he doth need a new muse.

Obviously you can only come up with silly questions as some sort of retort.

Face it man, this song is bad and so is 20ten. Only the fammiest of the fammybots disagree but they would even like it when Prince released a fart.

But he got paid, so he's happy.

Music itself deserves better.

lets have a look at prince's public image. some might say its a false image which does not reflect his true identity. some might say the public prince does indeed bleed certain aspects of his real nature.

might be fair to assume the man behind the make-up is just a guy with his own demons, like the rest of us,

except his life has been mostly lived in the public eye, constantly scrutinized on the one hand, and hailed as god of the music kingdom on the other.

we've followed most of his career, some have been here from the start, literally buying into the illusion he created himself to be.

a short kind of fugly mischief making man who knew what to do to get attention and make his career work.

make-up, outrageous clothing, explicit songs about sex and heaven, god and the devil, murder and rape, vicitmization and triumph,

an anxiety-ridden genius finding moments of obsessive pleasure between the sheets, and his dreams of a love-filled paradise. "love me. love me."

a psychologically violent man, a gentle man, a patient man, a tempestuous man, an ignorant man, a wise man, a punk and an angel, a pure heart, a dark mind, worshipping flowers and nightclubs at the same time.

we buy into all this confusion, these contradictions, then wonder why he doesnt make sense, why his actions dont match his words, why he is aware of all his own rights, but oblivious to anyone else's.

point is, we buy into the artistic image he has created and we pin our hopes on it.

we hope he'll deliver the dawn, the promised land, the website of the century, the ultimate romance, the dirtiest sexual high, the lyric to end all other lyrics, the album to blitz them all...

we buy into it because he sounded convincing, we believed him, we believed the image was real, but logically, how is it possible for one man to deliver all the things he says he will?

he wrote a lot of songs that showed his wisdom, we took that and we assumed he was a guru, a prophet, a leader. people around him bought into it to and fed into his image of being 'the most high'. he believed it too.

he talked about the dawn, we bought into it and expected to see the sun shine out from his ass on a regular basis, then got disappointed when it didnt happen.

musically, we naively expected that a human being could continue to create works of gold until his dying day, oblivious to the reality of what it is to be human, not god, not a god, but just a human.

he's 52. he wears a mask. he wears a costume. he makes music. he creates worlds according to his own experiences and perspective.

he buckles under the pressure of his self-chosen life and lashes out at people from time to time. he has secrets. he has his own skeletons. there are things he doesnt want anyone to know about.

he took his crappy childhood and made it into something worthwhile. he took his warped human nature and poured it into his music, with extreme dedication and conviction, which is amazing for someone so lazy.

he made this thing work for 30 years. thats a long time to keep pushing the envelope. eventually it falls off the table and someone has to go pick it up so he can keep pushing it some more.

this man has an inexhaustible amount of energy, he is a constant series of reactions, pro-actions, negations, revelations, masturbations, denegrations and consummations.

step back. let him be. watch. whatever disappointment we might feel is our own responsibility.

he may have led us up the garden path believing in the romantic notion that the peak of his genius might last forever, but grown-ups dont believe that.

he's not santa. he doesnt come every christmas. but thats no reason for us to sulk because we didnt get a better present than last year.

maybe all we have to do is be content to accept that he cannot be understood, that life goes on, that his music will be whatever he wants it to be, and all he really needed from 'the world' was unconditional love.

maybe thats the test. can you accept him unconditionally?

Wow, I'm a diehard fan on the real, but I think the only great thing about this track is the rich background vocals... not a fan of the lyrics--you can analyze them all you want to, but I just can't rock out to this one. I get the message, but I don't really wanna press repeat... I need money, Prince, so I can go to your MadSG concert in december, thanks.

I respect his right to take as many artistic liberties and go any number of new directions that he chooses, but I can't get into this one... Laydown was the last one I turned up on the system...another song that was good because of background vocals (thanks to Liv, Shelby and Elisa)...

How'm I gonna fill this empty room...
