Love it, it has some awesome parts - love the autotune section, love the drum beat, love the little electronic embellishes, love the backwards guitar -

don't like the chorus or the female backing vocals

I like the lyrics... *runs & hides* giggle I "read" it like a message ala "F.U.N.K."

The music...confused

How I wish this phase (I call "craptackulous"), were over with already.

I'm not asking for the yester-years' great output. I am saying he still has great out put. He just gotta shake it a loose.

I get more and more disgusted each time. This song is HORRIBLE!!!

He needs to just stop making new music. He has enough past material to tour with.

You just need to stop listening to his new music. biggrin

V10LETBLUES

Prince has nothing musically or lyrically new to say. Gosh this is so below average white bread tasteless discount 3 day old bread.

Stale cardboard is tastier and funkier. Heck if that song were left out in perfect warm moldy conditions it still wouldn't get funky.

Oh well, nice try Prince. Just chill in your villa in Lauvaux oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh, and keep lathering that Purell all over yourself, but keep it off your music.

I still love ya and I'll still check out your concert though.

I'm glad Prince doesn't listen to those whining he can't make good music anymore and he should stop making music. He's still a pro and so what if he's not coming up with anything groundbreaking, no one else is either. He's did it, just let the man do what he loves the most. It's a hobby for him. If you don't enjoy it there's plenty other artist.

Yeah, kind of. I have no problem with the fact that there are some Prince songs I don't like, because those are few and far between. I love about 95% of his output.

If I were an artist and my fans liked 95% of what I put out, I'd be doing double back-flips down the freeway. That's a PHENOMENAL success rate.

[Edited 10/14/10 6:28am]

there is no willing and able in this song

Its a cool little tune with a catchy chorus and some nice guitar riffs, but nothing special. probably made in a day and then forgotten already.

I think you're right Bfunkthe1

The backing vocals have a traditional "call and response" like Willing and Able, and the tune is very mellow just like Willing and Able. Gospel influence...like Willing and Able.

But each person hears differently, of course. smile

ouch.

this whole money thing is becoming a bit of a theme, no? $, Act of God, When Will We Be Paid, Lavaux, the internet is dead, and now Rich Friends.

The songs seem to either be "i'm enlightened, why aren't you?", or "gosh! having money is complicated/fun/bad/who needs it?/don't touch it!"

and this has been said before, but the gulf between his live sound - from what i heard of the 2010 tour, le new morning, and even montreaux shows - and what he puts on record is just vast. Energy vs. flat lines, fun vs. pious, and organic vs. linn drum lite. How is this the same person?

ouch.

When Will We Be Paid is a Staples Singers song , Prince didn't write that

and it's not about money , it comments on white america not acknowledging blacks

what is this song even about?

(assuming the posted lyrics are close to correct)

it has nothing to do with having rich friends or being the rich friend, but seems more like something about a the church of (insert someone's name here)? don't get it.

song analysis anyone?

vitriol

The song rates as one of the most boring trax he's put out for years. But there are things on the album that are even worse. The song would benefit a lot from being some 2+ minutes shorter, but even so would be boring, bland and tasteless. It's a poor idea that goes and goes without getting nowhere.

The guy must be desperate to release the music he's releasing.

I hated Musicology when it came out. Not that I like it now but I think it's nearly a masterpiece compared to what we got after it.

Prince's artistry... R.I.P.

I particularly like the money theme. The song's in line with 2010 and a kind of in between of Compassion and Lavaux. It's unpreditable, I like the funky and accoustic sound, the lyrics are crystal clear and it's a track that's for easy listening. I like it. biggrin The 20 second snippet was not a give away of the tune. Thanks Mr Radio and for the lyrics that were posted.

Just gotta love the way Prince does things. Totally uncommerical and just via the underground.

Supercool. For the people, by the people cool

Very spare sounding like it was an unfinished demo- that's not a criticism, just an observation and I have to admit that many Prince songs don't ignite on first listen for me but after a few plays they hit.

Did anyone else hear that little guitar snippet just a few secs before the end as a sample from David Bowie's Fame?

If so, wonder if there was a message there...

This song is a classic Prince masterpiece. The lyrics refer to the church making so much money that the preachers don't need a real job...Its sad but true. He is right on point with this. Considering what is currently going on in the world today...eye can't wait to hear the rest of 20TEN DELUXE. Since 20TEN was the return to the playful 1999/Controversy Prince eye grew up with...

I do like his vocal, and there's a neat little synth bit running along underneath, but on the whole, that's one boring song. How about a melody or a hook (or both)?
