what is this song even about?

(assuming the posted lyrics are close to correct)

it has nothing to do with having rich friends or being the rich friend, but seems more like something about a the church of (insert someone's name here)? don't get it.

song analysis anyone?

Good question, my take though it could be nonsense, welcome to discuss.

Theme....Money/Friends/happiness and their worth.

Setting...Life

Allegory - Two levels, literally money vs friends. Symbollically, money being" bought happiness " vs spiritual life (friends)

rich friends

yeah, oooh,

money money, material world

rich friends God?

who needs money, when u got rich friends?

who needs a bank account, if the bank won't lend?

who needs a daydream, if everything is sin? Fantasy isn't needed if it's a sham anyway

who, who, who needs money when u got rich friends? Who needs $ if you have God

who, ow, who who

who needs money?

rich friends

oh, who who, get on

rich friends

who needs a job, when u can open up a church? Why work for someone if you can help others instead

u can't buy happiness but u can pay for the search You can pay to get somewhere/something but it won't necessarily be what you wanted or bring you the emotion you were searching for

forgotten the cause of all ur pain - someone's memory is short

ain't nothing worse than cryin' the blues in a private plane - nothing worse than having the very best of something and still being unhappy

(private plane)

tell me who, who,

who needs money when u got rich friends? who needs luxury when you have God or friends of God?

who who, oh, who who, who needs money?

rich friends

oh, who who, rich friends

who needs cash when u can get a plastic card? why worry about credit when plastic buys debt

oh, don't worry about 2morrow y'all (2morrow y'all) ignore the future

i said, it's much 2 hard (much 2 hard) it's too difficult to worry about

let's all charge the fisherman with the fat bottom line If the fisherman is Jesus (? ) Let's blame him for the bottom line decision that one has to consider OR: literally, a mere lowly fisherman with minimal funds ??

drop it in the water, hook a fish every time throw out the bait and win everytime/ OR trick him everytime into spending more?

people who, who who, oh

who needs money when u got rich friends? You don't need money. God will make you rich.

who needs money when u got rich friends?

who who, money money, rich friends

spend another holiday Splash out on cash

playin' in spain

flip it on2 ebay sell it on the net

the carpet stain as second hand? Damaged goods??

just like the windows in the church Stained glass church windows

that u bought in ur name that we use for our own home decorations and pleasure??

i guess another holy man, oh, Jesus died in vain?

he died in vain

yes he did y'all

who, tell me who,

who needs money when u got rich friends

tell me, tell me, tell me

tell me, tell me, tell me

who needs money when u got rich friends

bank account, (money money)

keep dreaming money money is not the answer dream on

who needs money when u got rich friends

rich friends

rich friends,

oooh

money money

rich friends

etc etc etc

COOL SONG!

i like it a lot. i dig the production of 20ten and i like it on this track to. no more "overproduced" tracks. easy mood overall - funky and "up-to-date". prince is having fun so we will have it to with the deluxe version... it is cool to be a prince fan... cool

i have to listen the song over and over again... made my day

I feel your frustration. His recorded output has become so uninspired, cheesy and flat. You simply wouldn't want someone to overhear you listening to it.

Live he still brings it, but i think we have to accept that his days of making a good pop song are over.

So why do you listen to it. Is your life so miserable that you can´t find anything else to do ?

i suppose it must be fairly miserable if i have the time to reply to this message, but here goes..

i'm not hating on prince. please understand this. i fuckin love the guy for the great music and entertainment he's given us. he's enriched our lives. and it's becasue of this i'll always pay an interest into what he's doing. even with his worst recent lps there's usually at least one great track. and nothing's better than a good prince track

the thing that just bugs me out at the moment is the gap between the live artist and the recorded artist. i understand any artist losing their edge, their spark. it happens to the best of them. but i've seen him live many times recently and he still definitely has it. he's energised, he's creative, he's funny, man he's fuckin FIRE.

and then i listen to his recent records - and it's like listening to a completely different person.

so i hold hope that it's still there - and i think the way forward for him might be to stop trying to make pop songs. maybe it's a young man's game.

It's ok. There's not much to it though. And some needs to tell Prince to tell those females to stop singing on every one of his damn records.

This is God awful! The vocals are uninspired, and that chorus is cheesy, and that's the best word I can come up with for it.

As someone else said, where's the melody and hook? I mean, Prince could put out the sound of his shit hitting toilet water, and there are still going to be some people on here saying it's funky, a "masterpiece", or wanting to listen to it 5-10 times in a row to force themselves to like it or sink in.

Prince, just stop it. Just stop. Shut down the recording studio, and just release audio and video from the vault.

It is vaguely reminiscent of Willing & Able because of the vocals.

The music is more like a cover band doing a 1999 sequel.

Its ok I guess. Kinda has a michael jackson "superfly sister" vibe to it.

Demoish and not too serious production...slappy and lots of space for instrumentation..but works because it is kind of carefree...

I put this next to DeBarge "tip of my tounge". Kind of tounge in cheek.

I wasn't expecting Lavaux or Sticky Like Glue classic.

Co-sign.....absolutely feeling you on this one. I loved the shows he did in July and I also love a couple of songs on 20Ten like Future Soul Song and Walk in the Sand (of course some people obviously hate those songs and probably prefer songs that I probably dislike) but a lot of the stuff he releases these days is the kind of music I can only listen to with headphones or with the volume turned down....just because it is THAT embarrassing.

I still blast his old school songs and the newer songs that I love...but songs like this one, or Compassion, or Everybody Loves Me are not the type of music I want my neighbors to hear and for sure not the kind of music I´d put on when the ladies visit me. lol

As far as I´m concerned, he could just do a little rehearsal with Michael Bland and Sonny Thompson and play a bunch of old and new songs and just let the tape roll, record it and release it and it would still sell like hot cakes. I don´t even want him to release old songs from the vault because we know he´ll fiddle around with them...no, just rehearse some raw stuff, record it and release it. These days, I often prefer listening to rehearsals with subpar sound quality....much rather than listening to some cheesy, cringe inducing stuff like some of the songs he´s released lately.

It´s not about "hating" Prince...it´s just that some people have so much admiration and respect for him as an artist and, knowing and seeing that he´s still on fire and still capable of delivering a mesmerizing show, seeing him release some mediocre stuff just gives me a bad feeling.

He´s not washed up or burned out like some of his peers or some of his predecessors but I think he´s no longer able to "hear" his music the way we hear it.

i'd be interested to know when he wrote this song, was it before or after people started saying he is 'all about the money' ?

if it was after, then it comes across as him attempting to defend his position, by likening him situation to every day scenarios in the world, and he even goes as far as to point fingers at others to deflect the attention off himself.

if that is true then all i can say is there is a difference between need, and greed.

the music is enjoyable enough, but unfortunately this time round the lyrics tell me a very sad story in regard to where prince is at in his head. i hope i am wrong.

this too shall pass
