I think its cool he is doing this.

I enjoyed the whole sillyness of the Planet Earth giveaway.

Bad artwork though.

Lets cross our fingers for the music.

The proof for me is in the music. Period. How prince distributes his music is immaterial. At least he's plugging away pushing his ideas further i.e 'the Planet Earth model' but with a wider, international net. Who can blame any artist in this day and age from avoiding downloads when we all know many, many people download illegally without paying. The guy just wants to get paid and wants the lion's share.

Whether using papers/ magazines/ Target is ethical is no more controversial than whether using a major label ever was/is imo. The music will speak for itself just like it always has.

Does anybody recall whether the Planet Earth cd appeared in the international version of the British newspaper? In other words, can we get the new cd in the US at select magazine/newspaper shops that specialize in international publications?

That's all right then, as long as Prince gets a wire transfer upfront, the quality of the music is of little importance. biggrin

I appreciate the point you are making but equally as consumers we won't pay to see him live if the music he is releasing is shite. (ok, we might but most mainstream observers won't). lol

No, Planet Earth was never issued as a covermount Stateside.

I paid a UK pal to send me a copy of The Mail on Sunday after checking with two international newsstands in town.

strategy or not, part of a marketing process or not, this is an interesting way to promote himself, as obviously ppl will surely dl or copy his album and he won't get back any money, so better he gives the album for free..

Go Prince!

This is great news.

I had a feeling Prince would do this again, after the success of last time with the Mail.

He gets guaranteed distribution and probably makes much more money from the deal than he ever does when it is released by a record company via stores. It is also practically free for fans....a win win situation!!

So did I.

This time, I'm going to look for it online - then buy it when it becomes available in the States.

You'd think that someone who pretentiously called himself "The Artist" would have some professional pride. But instead, all he cares about is what's in his bank account at the end of the day. Artistic legacy? Pfffrt, who needs that when you can collect a couple of million by handing sub-par crap to a dying industry desperately searching for "innovative" ways of making people buy their obsolete product.

Bart, I've heard you argue in numerous threads about Prince's sub-par business dealings and shoddy marketing. Now you claim he is a shrewd rip-off artist fleecing his fans and exploiting his legacy. You can't have it both ways.

It is not Prince's fault that the music industry is in a radical state of reimagining itself. It will take another 25 years before a new successful business model is developed by the labels or whatever multinational is forcing Disneyfied music into your house. People do not buy cd's and artists do not make any money off the internet (I know-everyone should be NIN). People are not buying music anymore. What do you expect Prince to do in this environment? His marketing has gotten creative by necessity. He is an older artist, who is surviving better than most musicians of his age, in a market obsessed by youth.

As a consumer, I don't know how you can complain about free music from a talented American treasure. If you don't like the cd, there will be another one next year- unlike all these marketing musical geniuses that you marvel over who release their "product" in 5-year business cycles. And to bash his entire post-1990 catalog is pure laziness.

So people complain about Prince practically giving the CD away for free (plus having a deal with WB to release it in other countries), yet moan about how Princey doesn't put his stuff on the internet where everyone can have access to it.

That doesn't make any sense.
