Wow... someone had too much coffee this morning. It was just a suggestion. Why do people here jump on others so quickly? I play music myself and have a right to an opinion on Prince's new music. I feel sorry for individuals who can't get it in their skulls that people like what they like. Xanax, anyone?

Ummm, but no one has heard the album so the discussion cannot possibly revolve around the content of the record.

Ummm, people have heard the album and they liked what they heard, but that is not what I was talking about earlier. I respect your opinions, so in return I believe that others should respect mine. Who is judge and jury? None of us here, so let's speak our opinions freely without someone jumping to conclusions that a person is in need of a good "talking to". Good day, sir!

No he did not. We got several tracks for free over the years, but to get all the stuff he released over the years on the net you had to be a paying member of his online club. He never released a whole album for free on the net during that time period.

Enough tracks worthy of 2 albums in a short time period.

You said he gave albums away for free back then. But he did not. Prove me wrong if you can.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose, because the only review of the album I've seen is from a German magazine and it was in such chopped-up translated text that you could barely discern if it was positive or not.

I assume you are referring to the end of my post where I commented on the 3 new tracks he put out recently? I'm as guilty as the next person of liking banal and half-hearted music, especially from Prince (don't you TOUCH my stereo - that's my "Props n Pounds" rekid!). I'm saying that we don't need to accept nigh-universally derided music from Prince just because he is the one who released it. We, as hardcore fans like most on this site are, have a lot of sentimentality attached to Prince from the times where we first became fans. That does not make bad music turn good. Is there a judge and jury when it comes to proposed art? It's hard to say. If you say yes there is, then you must be open to criticism of any art you might appreciate. If you say it isn't, then you relinquish the right to criticize the art of another person.

I realized a long time ago that in order for me to say, "Prince is the best at _____" I had to be, in turn, saying someone else wasn't. This is judging art in and of itself. Now, if Prince turns up something which is patently subpar, I have the right to criticize it. My thousands of dollars invested in his career being the least of the reasons why.

I agree with what you are saying, I'm just confused why you're talking about this when we were discussing something else. I said that I like his new stuff, with the understanding that Purple and Gold was a gift to the Minnesota Vikings and not a "pop" release. I never interfere with anyone's opinion. I used to, and that was while I was on pain meds for my back. I learned my lesson then, and now I don't understand why people still attack each other here. Why can't we just post what we want and leave it at that? To try to come off as the most perspicacious person here and point out every little detail in a person's statements are not worth it. Peace to you, and I hope you like the new music.

This is tragic. The pop album, what once used to be a high art form, has devolved into a tchatche, a throwaway gimmick to help sell 50 cent tabloid newspapers.

Mr. Nelson, is this really worth a few pennies in your pockets?

I think it is more of an avenue for an independent artist to get his music it out in a cost effective way.

1) Prince gets paid up front. He doesn't have to wait 6 months to get paid. He also reaches a wider audience, who might not have purchased his CD. This exposure takes the place of radio play.

2)Seeing how the newspaper is promoting the CD, Prince has zero cost in promoting CD. That's a huge savings. That's where all the money goes now a days. On a label distributing deal Prince pays them to distribute and promote and seeing how CD sales are down and people keep stealing music, this makes it harder to make a profit. Just think if Prince had to pay to promote the CD in each country. That's a lot of money.

3)He doesn't get radio play-which means he can't promote a CD release properly. Shoot even the Rollingstones got radio play with their late 80's stuff and that wasn't great music, but that's when radio was less business and more music.

Wasn't Prince from the US once?

I wouldn't feel at all guilty about finding it online for free if he feels the rest of the world should have it for free. It left a bitter taste in my mouth when he did that on Planet Earth. and $10 didn't even include lyrics or friggin' song titles on the package. That's just lazy and cheap.

Music is a passionate thing and people feel passionately about it. Especially when you're decades into loving the output of a specific artist whom you now feel is delivering uninspired and lackluster music. Does Prince have anything to prove to me or people who think like I do (or anyone for that matter)? Not entirely, but only because I paid my money for the albums which I cherish and there was no guarantee that he would continue to make music that I would cherish.

Why can't we just post what we want and leave it at that? Because this is a discussion forum. I, personally, am not attacking anyone. I didn't call anyone names, I didn't even speak out of pocket about the people who like those songs. I simply reiterated a point that is often spoken here and that is that there seems to be an inherent universal acceptance of whatever Prince chooses to do from some people on the Org. These are the same people who paid $77 in a recession to get little to nothing, let alone something worth $77. It's okay to be pragmatic and to question the motives of an artist on a discussion forum. Debates, as long as they remain civil, are healthy.

Last years's Lotusflower was only properly released on cd in the USA by Target. All fans from other countries had to buy much more expensive imports or had to pay 77$ for the download-version. It took prince months to make a deal with a french record label to distribute the album in france. And it is a very weird move to release an album in just one european country and not the whole continent. It's like if he had released it only in Minnesota instead of the whole United States.

multiple territories, through complementary distribution channels. eek eek

um no, its not possible for 'artists' to release this way, its only possible for Prince, because he's Prince, or for Elton John, because he's Elton John, or for ALREADY WELL-KNOWN ARTISTS across the board, but new artists? no.

this may be an exercise in innovation, but its not relevant to 'artists' unless they are well-known.

imo, newspaper give-aways cheapen Prince and his music. dont know bout you all, but newspaper is what some folk use to clean up vomit, then chuck it in the trash.

the whole concept is inconsistent with anything even remotely musical and even though it's innovative, its not necessarily smart.

sorry people's i just get irked by 'representatives' who talk in a manner which shows they have no real connection to the true value of Prince's work, but hey, if they wanna throw it out there with raped rainforests and call it a brilliant idea they can be my guest lol

Co-Sign. Record labels, have the potential (let me repeat that: HAVE THE POTENTIAL) to put artists out there so the public knows who they are. People know who Prince is because he was (once) signed to a music label, and they (Warner Bros) in turn had the marketing and promotional muscle to get his name out there (but this was also helped by his music which stands on its own two feet). An indie artist can definitely work in an independent and innovative capacity, but what good is that if only your friends and family know who you are and you've had a plateau in terms of trying to reach a larger audience?

I think some people think it "cheapens" the music because it can give the appearance that if the album was any good, it would be worth the effort of promoting it and getting it out there through conventional channels - not just in terms of having it on a shelf in the record store, but all the guff that comes with that like mainstream radio play, TV, singles, promo etc, etc.

Honestly, I think this is how the wider audience often see it - especially since Prince has been known since the prince days as shitting out triple CDs and vanity projects full of filler whenever he feels like it.

The CD is promoting the tour, much like Planet Earth did - Again, it's seen as a freebie, it has no value.

Th people who think that it "cheapens" the music must be the audience of all the mainstream radio play and TV stuff, like Jay Z and friends.

But there are many big artists that are going the free/indie road, like Beck, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails etc.

The charts, radio and Tv don't mean shit anymore.

I still agree. But to fault my idea that using different marketing schemes is a smart idea is trashy is not polite. It was just an opinion, not to be taken so seriously. This is my last statement to this convo. Thanks for not calling me names, as many on here have before.... which I probably deserved since I spoke out of turn on many topics. I truly did have failed back surgery, and continue to have to take heavy pain killers to make the pain "almost" tolerable. I have put my business on hiatus until I can get better. So, I apologize to anyone in the past that I may have upset with stupid statements. I am a peaceful person. I have written over 10,000 songs and lyrics that pertain to love for all people and creatures on this earth. So it was not like me to say bad things or use bad language in the past. You are right, civil discussions are okay as long as opinions are not called out to be wrong. LoveLightPeace 2 all.

Point taken ludwig. I kinda forgot about the fiasco overseas with Lotusflower. I just wish he'd distribute the same everywhere. It might help his case a bit. Or if you do have to buy it, put it in a nice sturdy jewel case package that's worth 410. Not in a greeting card.

Prince is just showing artist that you don't have to be chained like a slave to a record company, you can live and do what you want outside of the industry, he's breaking down doors and changing the game

Record companies are slowy changing because of his actions artist are getting more rights, more freedom.

cool

i suspect he will soon be giving his music away for free on the internet to show artists exactly how much freedom they really have, if indeed that is his primary concern ?

oh thats right. the internet is over, and therefore artists no longer have true freedom, so a newspaper deal is the next best bet?

hail freedom. hail artists rights. i'm uber charmed

I understand that a lot of people are irritated by P’s comments concerning the internet but let’s be real. He does not have the foggiest clue on how to run an e-commerence business. He has to be willing to spend money and put up content and if he cannot get some sort of guranteed cash out of the project immediately he is not going to put up a site. I think it all comes down to money and how much he wants to spend on these projects. It should be obvious to everyone that he is not interested in spending a lot of money so the newspapers work for him and could very well work for other artist who do not have the funds to run a website. Besides P did such a bad job with Lotusflower I cannot understand why any of you want him to get back on the internet.

Exactly!!

And in case someone still is curious about the music :

in this article they say he uses some sounds from the past.

Prince replies: "I got some instruments out of my cellar wich I used during the Controversy and 1999 period".

I really don't know what he has 2 do these days 2 get us-the fans-excited??? He's in Europe, releases an album 4 free (who cares how much money he makes!!) and he gets a lot of media attention...still
