Well, after reading this entire thread...I see that some of our most articulate orgers are back with their encompassing opinions that they think are the final word.

Ahhh, I've missed the org!

On a lighter note...I am quite elated about the new music.

Keep 'em coming Prince.

You say that, but I remember that last time around I picked up a load of extra copies of Planet Earth thinking some Orger somewhere would be glad of the freebie. Couldn't give em away, ended up binning the lot!

I think art can be art but I do tend to agree with you. Where Prince is good here is that he is breaking the resistance that he is facing i.e. He is not very popular and as such is getting himseldf out there. However I do believe that I think Prince would love a normal recording deal because firstly you know you are popular and secondly he must spend sooooooo much bloody time orchestrating this stuff he must be knackered

well yeah i guess there's a lot of work that goes into all this, and i realize Prince is famous for a reason.

maybe he orchestrates these types of releases to express his freedom and independence as an artist, simply because he can.

i fully respect the statement he's making, but my point was more in regards to why this method of release is supposed to be a blueprint for other artists?

any artist can make money without commercializing themselves, so really what they want is the fame?

i dont understand why 'popularity' even matters in 2010. it doesnt really mean anything.

whenever an artist takes their work to a commercial audience, they are compromising their art, and will continue to do so for as long as they're mixing it up with big business $.

that's a fairly well-proven sore point for any artist who's been in and out of the commercial scene.

i still support what others have said in this thread about print media being a dying industry, and CD being a dying format.

what benefit is there for any artist to stay on board a sinking ship?

and why on earth would Prince want to?

this too shall pass

I can assure you its not as black and white as you make this situation out to be and its nowhere near as easy as "any artist can make money without commercializing themselves". Its one of the hardest industries to make money in for most artists and that includes artists who are signed.

It is also not true that artists compromise their work as soon as they try to sell it. Selling it to earn a living is one thing and is only to ensure that you can continue with your chosen art-form. What does compromise art is generally when big corporates get involved, who have no emotional attachment to the work and are only concerned about profits and bottom-line - its then that the compromise starts and most artists have to accept that if they want any chance of success. Trying to earn enough money by doing it on your own is quite difficult, even for extremely talented individuals.

I think it was you that was trumpeting the internet as being the saving grace for musicians - unfortunately, that's not quite the case. Yes, the internet has offered alternatives and the chance to distribute your music in a different way but there's always 2 sides to every coin. Apart from a few exceptions, its generally very difficult to get yourself noticed as an independent, especially when there are millions of others all doing the same. You either need a lot of luck, novelty value, or some sort of organised promotion behind you - just making good music is often not enough. Furthermore, the same internet, because of its freedoms and uniqueness of instant distribution, is also hurting artists because of illegal file-sharing and its a big problem. With the limited research I was able to do, for every single cd sold of my last album, there were at least 50 illegal downloads of it!!! How am I supposed to make money with that model?! If you owned a shop and for every 1 product you sold, 50 were stolen, it wouldn't be very long before you were out of business, would it?

Prince is not necessarily offering this method as the solution for all artists, he is just demonstrating that, of you're creative about it and think outside the box, then there are things you can do against the standard flow of the industry. Of course, its easier for him being an established name, but he's not asking artists to copy him verbatim, I think he's just proving that you can pull off an alternative.

For some, it is all about fame but then, they tend not to be the bona fide "artists", they tend to be teh "product and puppet". Artists are first and foremost concerned about the art, then getting fairly compensated and then if fame comes as part of that, so be it. At least, that's it for me - I make my music, I try (and do) sell it so that I can make more. Being famous, getting recognised and mobbed in the street is the furthest thing from my mind!

Prince will give new album 20TEN away free to Daily Mirror readers

Prince (Pic:Mirrorpix)

Superstar Prince is giving away his new album to his millions of fans – only in the Daily Mirror.

The singer has shunned selling his eagerly-anticipated CD 20TEN in the shops or releasing it online because he wants as many people as possible to hear his music. biggrin

More than 2.5 million copies of his 10-track album will be free in next Saturday’s Daily Mirror – the only place in the UK and Ireland it will be available.

His decision is the talk of the record industry because he is the first major artist to release a new album in a national daily newspaper.

Prince said he was delighted to be working with the Mirror, adding: “I am very proud of the album. It’s great it will be free to your readers in the newspaper.” razz

Next week in the Mirror, in the run-up to the release of his new album, the 52-year-old music legend – who has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide – will be giving his first British newspaper interview in more than 10 years.

We’ll also be giving away tickets to Prince’s European concerts. biggrin Paul Rees, of Rock mag Q, said: “It’s such a smart move for him to release his new album through the Mirror.

“Everyone is talking about the new album. As a performer he’s astonishing – and this album will be more of the same.” cool

Guns N’ Roses legend Slash said: “Wow I’m so looking forward to the Prince album in the Mirror. I’ve always wanted to have the call from him to work together.” eek

BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills said: “I grew up listening to Prince – he is an absolute legend. I am really looking forward to what he has to offer with this album.”

Prince spokeswoman Kiran Sharma added: “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World in 1995 was Prince’s first No1 selling single as a completely free artist.

“Fifteen years on, Prince is demonstrating that in 2010 it is still possible for artists to be independent and innovative. 20TEN, is a celebratory Prince masterpiece.”

Prince week with features every day - and his new album FREE in next Saturday's Daily Mirror
