I guess the Wtachtower people are now doing his artwork.

The artwork is a riff on Bitches Brew, Bart/Trent Reznor.

Bullcrap. You might think that, he might think that, but it's fugly and ridiculous.

Bart, I've heard you argue in numerous threads about Prince's sub-par business dealings and shoddy marketing. Now you claim he is a shrewd rip-off artist fleecing his fans and exploiting his legacy. You can't have it both ways.

Making shit up, I see.

As a consumer, I don't know how you can complain about free music from a talented American treasure.

Formerly talented. Which he himself acknowledges.

You cannot bypass the internet. The internet is bigger than Prince.

Just because he can turn in a record, no matter what the overall quality, and get an upfront payday does not mean he is clever and this also isn't a new strategy for him.

Its all about the $£$£$£ for Prince!!!!

Prince's UK album/record sales arent that great.Without having to worry about distribution or packaging or even pressing the cd AND getting paid a one time fee from the newspaper,he has made loads more cash than if he had released it via normal channels.

The album will be scrutinzed and ripped apart by critics...Im thinking about the tanking Mr Goodnight got.I can't help but think that Prince isn't doing himself any favours in long run with this form of distribution.

Well, with this means of distribution, Prince has said screw the entire pipeline, and look.... wouldn't it be nice if other performers ditched their contracts and went innovative like this. Prince would definately love it if they did, I think that is an example he is trying to teach here.

Yes, he is about the money, but not ALL about the money. If he was, he simply had keep sucking the WB teet.

We are all so full of doody here

That's not true. WB wouldn't allow him to release 3 albums in a year like he is known to do now.

Bart - you think that looks like WATCHTOWER art? You've never seen the Watchtower then. It is clearly done by someone who does fashion renderings - hence the elongated body, etc. Not that I like it , I think it kinda sucks for an album cover - as a poster it was ok. But again your out there hatred for Prince is skewing your ability to post with any sort of objectivity - even on what art looks like. You do realize you don't HAVE to post on EVERYthing - right?

And Jeromejack - REALLY? You also have not looked at Bitches Brew if you think that. Look at the elements. The image of Prince is hand drawn then colored in photoshop, the background element made in illustrator and a photographed flower dropped in. This was not a piece of art in concept, clearly it was cobbled together from that poster art which at least worked unto itself. Bitches Brew was clearly thought through and rendered well to boot.

The 2010 logo is pretty ridiculous because the forms are ok, but it's hardly legible except if you are a Prince fan and know what it says.

That said - if the music is good put it in a brown paper sleeve.

Please, no one leave me any harsh comments today. My poor back is in so much pain right now, I can hardly type.

I had a thought about the cd itself. The look of it reminds me of something Biblical. Is it just me or does it seem like what many people would describe as the "good" part of Revelations?? There are people walking towards a summit, from what I can tell... and light shining down from above, which many have described as the event in which Jesus comes back and brings his army of Angels to destroy the devil. Am I thinking too deeply with this or has anyone else thought this? Please be gentle.

Bart, you don't have to take our word for it, read the comments of other artist, they voice the same view as Prince. biggrin

Macy Gray has said that record labels are short-sighted in how they treat their artists.

The singer suggested to Stylist that she should not have to worry about topping the success of her 1999 international hit 'I Try'.

Gray said: "I like people who do art for the sake of art. Actors have the luxury of making a big movie and then they'll do a little independent film.

"In music, it's almost like a crime if you do something less successful. Record labels are short-sighted. They want to make money and make that clear. I want to make money too, but my work is also an art."

Of her distinctive voice, she added: "I think individuality is essential. God made us all different for a reason, and in order to feel good about yourself you have to really know your purpose and know why you're here, and that's singular to everyone. I think originality is the most important thing."

I'm not one for revisionist history...I loathed the hell out of some "Mr. Goodnight"...lol...But we don't have to make up shit to prove a point...If anything Planet Earth was an average Prince album that received generally favorable reviews....But don't take my word for it...Check it out below...

Isn't this thread losing sight of what is important (as usual)...

1. Prince is releasing a new album this year.

2. The people who still want Prince's new music can get hold of this album for the price of a newspaper.

3. Those who no longer like Prince or his latest output do not need to buy it (but jeeesh stop whinging about how he was better in the past - get over it and go away!)

Also for those slagging Prince off for linking up with The Mirror then all I can say is...

Thank God it wasn't The Sun or the News of the World. Give me a slightly left leaning tabloid over those fascist rags any day!!!!!

To be honest I'd rather The Mirror than The Mail (which has the cheek to masquerade as a "serious newspaper" and is in fact an insidious piece of xenophobic trash!)

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

New music, woo!

Actually I'd rather spend £10 or more on a decent copy of the album (digitally or a CD) than have to buy such trashy newspapers. But hey, it's new music for little money, and I needed some toilet paper anyway.

That said, there's something weird going on when Prince has to go to the tabloid newspapers (a dying breed themselves, with dwindling audiences) to get his music out.

That was such a weird comment about iTunes he made recently too... that they wouldn't pay him an advance. Are the days of "make something people want, and they might buy it voluntarily" really over for Prince? Sad state of affairs.

Yeah, I agree, he seems to be missing the point. WE decide whether we want to buy it or not. Has he really gotten that far removed from reality? You don't get cash for churning out shit anymore, people actually need/want to buy it! i.e. it needs to be good.

when i said that it was a new strategy i was pointing to the fact the internet kills album profits and leaves the artist more skint than he or she deserves.so giving it away increases his album exposure without the ugly music industry and also puts ticket sales through the roof like it did in london.i was in london for the first time ever as im a scot and the crowds where massive.shove in a cheque for quarter of a million and prince remains the winner in an industry thats ageist anyway for those over 40 nevermind 51.personnally id have the official website free again with other music for sale and even more promo stuff at a cheap price on i-tunes.it would make sense when he is not on the road.and as far as reviews by the critics who cares.

Maybe I just have a bad memory, but I can't remember this amount of critizism around the time of Planet Earth. As far as I can remember the majority seemed to be thrilled about his ways and wished he would do more of that. What happened?

What I don't understand why people think this has to be about one thing! How many things do you decide upon based on one consideration alone?

I mean, why can't it be partly about it being the best deal for Prince financially, combined with benefit for fans that they effectively get it for free, as well as improving his distribution and reach to an audience many times over, whereby, instead of waiting a month or so to hit the big numbers (and these days he certainly wouldn't sell 2.5million) he gets to get 2.5million copies out in a day!

Its a win-win situation for Prince, the fans and the publishers....a good deal all round. Some here wear such shit-tinted glasses they'll pull apart anything and try and turn it in to a negative rolleyes

...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
