As far as new material goes, it's about as bad as anything I could've imagined. Plastic, disingenuous pop music is not the direction I'd hoped Prince would be going in at this stage of his career. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I've got a slight pre-prince album tension. Which means I quite like the hype, the prospect and four/fifth of the leaked songs. I am quite hopeful that Prince might actually be delivering something the world AND the fan base would like.

Oh, that's just unfair. Most people don't even know enough about Prince's post-80s work to be able to think "not highly" of it. Popularity and quality are two different things, to sell out an arena tour of course he has to do the 80s stuff, the general public doesn't go to concerts to hear new music, they want to hear the stuff they know. And you can't fill up the arenas with your hardcore fans.

I don't know about Roadhouse Garden, but he may have rerecorded his old albums and just had a change in plans. I remember asking Morris Hayes about it around 2000 and he said they were almost done. Who knows, but I've heard he'll get an album back a year starting in 2013. [Edited 1/2/09 2:07am] Release Yourself

Wow, Bria´s album is partly produced by Morris Hayes, with Prince on guitar. Can´t wait to hear that album. The last time I heard some music produced by Morris alone was in 2002, and I´m really curious about this album now.
The Prince songs also make me kinda curious, the music is probably great but I have my doubts whether the lyrics will be accessible by those who are not really into his eccentric views. Previewing these songs and then letting people wait is a bit frustrating and takes away from the momentum. A surprise release, or maybe not a surprise release but a quick release right after the listening sessions would be much better, in a business sense. I am very glad with the teaser. Just see it as a single, released before the album in the old days. And not getting two songs, but FIVE.

However, Prince´s timing is sometimes a bit off and I wish we could get to hear the new material soon, and hopefully ALL of it ( I hope he won´t leave out some of the previewed songs like he did back then with some songs, like Days of Wild, among others). Colonized Mind and Here I Come (Bria's song) would be keepers IMO. They both have interesting, intelligently-written lyrics and good music (even though I would prefer a Prince version of Here I Come).
Crimson & Clover is nice - but should be saved for live performances. I'm not a big fan of high-profile artists releasing cover songs on their own albums (I do like multi-artist cover song compilations though, especially for charity). Wall Of Berlin - it's interesting, but at times it's a little too "cutesy" (like Lolita was). So that leaves 4ever and (There'll Never B) Another Like Me. While they have grown on me -- especially the instrumental jam of TNBALM -- I wouldn't want them to be released.

The irony of Colonized Mind is that it's being sung by a man who's changed lyrics to his past songs, no longer will use 'swear words' and won't vote, yet he'll write a song called 'Colonized Mind.' He's the one that's been herded and reprogammed. It's doubly funny when you think that the man lives in America, pays taxes, has to follow whatever tax laws are passed onto him, as well as civic laws, but again, has been herded by 'elders' into not voting. Anyone that tries to give some quasi political message in a song and doesn't even vote should be laughed off the planet. And when you then call that song 'Colonized Mind' when nobodys mind has been more 'colonized' than yours, well... Crimson & Clover is nice - but should be saved for live performances. I'm not a big fan of high-profile artists releasing cover songs on their own albums (I do like multi-artist cover song compilations though, especially for charity).
I agree there's nothing wrong with his cover, but it's just that -- a cover, a b-side at best. And to see people clamoring for a Foo Fighters, Hendrix or Radiohead cover on the album goes to show the only way the man can currently write a hook or memorable song is by covering one from another artist. An album of cover songs by Prince might even make for a good album but that statement also speaks to where he is as a songwriter. [Edited 1/2/09 7:18am] No hard feelings.

[Edited 1/2/09 7:18am] I do not agree with your view on Prince and Colonized Mind. In the song colonized mind it appears to me that he is telling how he feels about how the "system" is (or he feels it is). Therefore, he may not want to vote because he does not care for how the political system works. He mentions the following: "Upload The 2 party system The lesser of 2 dangers - Illusion of choice" Which says to me, he is not thrilled with the whole Two-Party system. If that is the case, he probably would not vote...(IMO) He did not want to vote for the lesser evil between the two...like a lot of ppl said..."Well, I don't agree with either of them, but I will choose "this person" because I like what he has to offer a bit better than the "other person" In the song, he is telling how he "feels" about it all... I do not see why you feel he has been herded, or should not sing this song, because he did not vote. If he did not agree with -either- Democrat or Republican, or the views they stood for, or if he simply did not care for some of the views, maybe that is why he decided to NOT vote...(not a bad reasoning to me) I cannot jump into his mind, therefore I am NOT attempting to put words into his mouth....This is simply MY interpretation of Colonized Minds. He doesn't vote for the simple reason that his mind has been colonized by his religion. It's their belief which Prince mindlessly adheres to. It's that simple. He's not being some martyr. No hard feelings.

Prince will release three albums in 2009, he has boasted, and none will involve a record label. "The gatekeepers have to change," said the Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. After a cantankerous relationship with various large record companies, Prince is now in final negotiations with "a major retailer" to distribute the albums, at least in the US. He will also take orders at a new, "highly interactive website", according to the LA Times. The first of three albums is MPLSOUND, an "electro-flavoured" solo disc recorded at Prince's Paisley Park Studios. Using Pro Tools and "new ways of recording", the Purple One created a raft of experimental pop songs, including a rap by Q-Tip and a track called Funky Congregation, where Prince calls on people to, er, funkily congregate. Lotus Flower, the second album planned for this year, is a tribute to the electric guitar. Songs like Dreamer are filled with guitar solos, bringing them a long way from MPLSOUND's squelchy pop. On the third album, Elixir, Prince joins his new "protege", Bria Valente. "We got sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album," Prince explained. Elixir is a record of sexy, chill-out songs, with Valente's vocals, Prince on guitar and beats by Morris Hayes. "This music is nasty, but it's not dirty," Prince emphasised. "There's no profanity. It isn't promoting promiscuity. [Valente is] singing about her lover, who could be her partner for life." Since becoming a Jehovah's Witness, Prince has become a vocal advocate for fidelity and faith – as well as other, more controversial values. His recent comments on homosexuality provoked considerable outcry. "I have friends that are gay and we study the Bible together," he said in this week's interview, as if that will put an end to it. Although Prince did not vote on Proposition 8, California's controversial gay marriage bill, it was only because Jehovah's Witnesses don't vote at all. "I didn't vote for Obama either," he said. Better not count on Prince playing the inauguration later this month. "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

This is why he is putting out 3 Albums, so that he can tour with all new material and not have to play his hits. He could do more obscure stuff as well.

That is YOUR opinion. Do not approach me in the way that you are, trying to tell me that your opinion is the only way to feel...Unless you are Prince, then you do not know exactly what he "feels" in colonized minds. [Edited 1/2/09 7:18am] I fully support Prince's decision to stop using curse words. Who seriously wants him to swear anymore? As far as voting: Prince pays taxes in the USA. As such, he can practice any religion he wants and can decide NOT to vote if he wants. Cover songs: Prince himself once highly criticized artists who resorted to recording cover songs for a living. He specifically used Rod Stewart as an example. He also said during his early years that he would never release a cover song on an album -- but we've had 6 cover songs on CD in the last 12 years. I don't mind the occasional cover song, but as a "b-side" or on a tribute CD -- don't compromise your own album with a cover.
