But, that is an opinion...
Personally, I love his older music, AND his newer music. I really liked Musicology. I really enjoyed several joints from that album...as well as Planet Earth...
There have been certain songs throughout his entire career that have not clicked with me, but overall, I have enjoyed his music from then, through now...
It is all a matter of opinion and taste!
and that's it: it is an opinion.

I've been here a long time. The "negative" people have never, ever stopped my enjoyment of Prince's music. And to be honest, it's some of the so-called positive people that ruin this forum to the point I rarely visit it. No one can make any of you feel anything you don't want to feel. Instead of remaining positive, some of you give light to the "negative" person or people and make the situation worse.

I don't always agree with Wall but I do think he has the right to voice his opinions even with people telling him he should move on because they don't want to hear what he has to say. If he's a troll, y'all keep feeding him.

Ugh. Some Prince fans are so insipid that I feel embarrassed to love the guy's music so much.

His post contained constructive criticism of Prince's new music. Nowhere did he write anything the least bit hateful about Prince himself.

Anyone remember EvilWhiteMale? Now that guy wrote some hateful stuff. Likewise, Bart has said some ridiculous things. I've seen nothing but intelligent posts from Wall thus far. Just because his thoughts on Prince's new music don't adhere to the mass consensus of the fams doesn't mean he's a "hater."

I think some Prince fams need to make peace with the fact that the vast majority of people, aside from those working at Rolling Stone, don't think highly of Prince's new work. Why else do you think he has to perform a setlist of strictly 80's material to sell out those arenas? No one wants to hear him perform classics like Turn Me Loose and Musicology.

Come on now...U got to be kidding me.....I think some Prince fans need to laugh more...I think they need to learn how to take a joke....I think they need to get that bug outta their ass...

LOL...Since when have you known me to be on some hardcore, fundamentalist Prince fan shit?

U know better than that Purple Knight....Jokes homie.....jokes....Learn to laugh at the absurdity of life....In other words stop taking yourself so seriously before writing your thesis...lol....Peace homie...

I disagree with you Cam. It is the more positive people who try to force their opinions on people. Even Giovanni is talking about how the skeptics are excited or whatever. No, I'm not. I've been a fan for 30 years and know Prince has a track record of not doing as he says. The new songs do nothing for me and people telling me that I don't know good music because of that is really pompous to me.

I feed off you guys enthusiasm though. I hope Prince gives you guys what you hope for.

Couldn´t agree more with you about orgers like Wall. Even though I still enjoy Prince´s live shows and the occasional new song here and there ( I really like Somewhere Here On Earth, Reflection, Here On Earth, and the music to Lion Of Judah), I can still relate to most of the things orgers like Wall post here because they do have a point and their posts are usually far from being overly emotional but rather accurate reviews of Prince´s current output and eccentricities.
I even enjoy Bart V.H´s contributions here because he usuallly mentions a lot of facts, though I do find some of his opinions a bit too harsh but he often hits the nail on the head.
I kinda miss Neversin posting on this board but who knows, maybe he IS Wall?lol

I agree...we need more spirited, intelligent debate about the homie's music...

But I also think that people need to get a sense of humor around here.....ha

And for the last time folks (and PK), my Wall post was intended to be a humorous jab...

Maybe what some folks say about Prince fans are right...Because some of you take yourselves much too seriously...

Y'all need to laugh more...lol

And I disagree with you vendetta1. The negative people definately have a right to say what they want but some of what they say makes no sense and some people have been doing this for years. You can even tell when they want to start stuff. It comes to a point where you got to ask these people questions like "why are you here if you have nothing but bad things to say?" I'm kinda surprised that people are surprised that one could ask that question here. Confrontation may happen but it creates dialogue and sometimes understanding. It not going to change anyone either way nor should it but it makes it interesting.

I don't like all the negative talk around here, which is something the org has been notorious for for many years now but I'm not going to let that stop me from coming in here and saying what I have to say. I'm a fan for God's sake, why would I NOT talk about Prince, especially if there is something good to say about him? It's a shame that others feel like that they can't be in here but that's on them. Shit, I'm having a good time! party

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2008/12/visiting-with-p.html

Tuesday morning, I received the Golden Ticket of journalistic invitations: a summons to Prince's mansion, high atop Mulholland Drive, to hear the new music he'll be releasing sometime after the holidays. At 8 p.m. that evening, I drove my dirty Mazda past the fountain in his courtyard, parked by the limo in the back, and entered his manse. The man himself greeted me in a candelit study, where he was laboring over a laptop with his Web designers, Anthony Malzone and Scott Addison Clay.

The next five hours took me from that room to a car Prince referred to as "Miles Davis," where we listened to one set of songs; into a back room furnished with a round bed, faux-fur carpeting and a plexiglass Rhodes piano, where he played cuts by his new protege, the comely Bria Valente; and into that white limo, where the entirety of "Lotus Flower," the album previewed earlier this month on Indie 103.1, boomed through the speakers as we drove through Hollywood.

Needless to say, it was an amazing experience. After the jump, a few tidbits, including Prince's promise of three albums in 2009 and his thoughts on Proposition 8.

Prince will release not one, but three albums in the new year. He's in final negotiations with "a major retailer" to distribute the music in physical form, and a highly interactive website will also provide an opportunity to buy. He's not working with a record label. "The gatekeepers have to change," he said several times throughout the evening.

He's found his way back to the sound of "When Doves Cry." The first disc, tentatively titled "MPLSOUND," is an electro-flavored solo effort recorded at Paisley Park Studios. Prince experimented with Pro Tools and "new ways of recording" on these trippy, experimental pop songs. One features a Q-Tip rap; another calls a "Funky Congregation" to worship and may become a live set piece.

He's ready to revive the Quiet Storm. "We got sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album," he said, introducing Valente's new album, "Elixir." The tracks are chill, with Valente's buttery voice melding with beats by Morris Hayes and Prince's guitar lines. Some are explicitly sexual. "This music is nasty, but it's not dirty," Prince said, explaining how sensual music fits in with his much-discussed faith -- he's a Jehovah's Witness. "There's no profanity. It isn't promoting promiscuity. She's singing about her lover, who could be her partner for life."

He loves his guitar. As the tracks played on Indie 103.1 indicated, "Lotus Flower" is rooted in the instrument. Prince said he refocused on his playing while performing live dates with the singer Tamar Davis in 2006; with the spotlight trained on someone else, he could fall back in love with solos and riffs. "Lotus Flower" is a varied album, featuring cuts recorded over the course of two years, but standout tracks include some heavy rockers -- especially the apocalyptic "Dreamer," which Prince said was partly inspired by the radical black comedian Dick Gregory.

He did not vote for Proposition 8. In fact, he didn't vote at all. "I didn't vote for Obama either," he explained. "Jehovah's Witnesses haven't voted for their whole inception." The controversy over a recent New Yorker "Talk of the Town" item, which Prince feels implied he supported the gay-marriage ban, has upset him. It's the first thing he wanted to discuss when the Web geeks had gone and we were alone. "I have friends that are gay and we study the Bible together," he said. He added that two sides fighting "only benefit the third person" who instigated the fight.

I've been a fan for over 26 years now, and I've gotten every album and side project as they came out since the 1999 album (bought the earlier ones in due time too). I'm only a few years short of supporting Prince's entire career.

I have noticed throughout this whole time 2 distinct characteristics in a Prince fan: those who love the music, and those who love the man. Those characteristics can exist separately or together, in varying degrees.

The truly "diehard" fans seem to love the man above all else, even to the point of being blinded to subpar music. So many discussion threads are related to his looks, his hair, his clothing, his sexuality, to the point that the music becomes secondary.

There are many fans here who want to discuss only the music, and it is their right.

I will continue to buy Prince's albums, because he has earned my loyalty and very often he surprises me with "gems" on each album.

But from a strictly musical critique of everything that is currently available NEW, he's middle of the pack right now.

I am very glad with the teaser. Just see it as a single, released before the album in the old days. And not getting two songs, but FIVE.

Exactly! Or...it might be version. Remember the "trial balloon" with Guitar? We got a two-fer on that - demo and album versions. nod

Very true - and keep in mind that Prince has a history of not releasing the strongest songs as lead singles... usually the album tracks are much stronger.

Exactly. It goes without saying what I'm writing is only my opinion. I'm not going to add 'imho' to everything I write -- it's a given that it is.

I'd also point out I don't engage with people over personalities or board drama. It's not my fault if people want to labor over why I or anyone else posts their opinion. Don't blame me if something I write leads you to psychoanalyze me or anyone else. All that happens as a result of that is a thread getting off topic.
No hard feelings.

No duh, everything in here in someones opinion. But, it is rude, for someone to state an opinion as if it were fact, especially when they are attempting to discredit another persons opinion. Do you know what typing "It's my personal opinion" is called? RESPECT...It is validifying your own opinion, and not making other people "eat it" so to speak. It is more respectful than articulating that your opinion is the WORD, which people tend to do...

You know as I read through this whole thread, we have REALLY gone off track here and I take some responsibility for my part in this. We have new music coming our way and it's exciting! For those excited like me, let's keep on celebrating! For those not excited, I'm sure you'll be moping around but it's your right, it's all good & I'll support you & your moping. For those cautiously optimistic, I don't blame you one bit but some news is better than nothing. Let's get back to the topic at hand shall we?!!

It is more respectful than articulating that your opinion is the WORD, which people tend to do...
You do things your way honey, and I will do things my way...
Thank you...

How old are you? 12? rolleyes

Believe me, I am plenty educated. But you are obviously one of those people whose parents coddled them to the point that they think everyone else around them has to apologize for expressing an opinion. Which is basically what it is when someone says, "that's just my opinion." An apology. Or, at least, a softening of their position so someone else's tender psyche doesn't get bruised.

Incidentally, being treated like a child isn't respect. If a person really respects you, they express their opinion without apology - in the belief that you're big enough to handle it.

No one is making you "eat" anything. If you don't like the opinion, simply move on.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Exactly.

Also, there are people here that I can't even stand to see their names but I learned to ignore them and read around their posts. Folks add power to people when they see they get folks riled up.

Yes, it goes without saying, that you are stating YOUR opinion. But, people like you need to attempt to learn how to have a healthy "discussion" without attempting to throw your opinion down to be the "final word". Just because it is how YOU feel, does not mean it is the TRUTH.
Just like your previous post to me, when I stated what I felt, you replied as follows:

In the song colonized mind it appears to me that he is telling how he feels about how the "system" is (or he feels it is). Therefore, he may not want to vote because he does not care for how the political system works.

WaLL WROTE:
He doesn't vote for the simple reason that his mind has been colonized by his religion. It's their belief which Prince mindlessly adheres to. It's that simple. He's not being some martyr.

You are stating your opinion to be fact, as if Prince himself TOLD you why he does not vote...That is how YOU put things, and that is wrong, unless you are quoting it and can come up with the source upon where you got the info...

I don't personally care what you do, but I am just entertaining the idea that there is a better way to depate issues...

You need to become a little less rude, and a little more educated.

Nah, I'm 9
~laughing~
If you feel that it is childish to attempt to not "bruise" people, then by all means, bruise away...
It is just not my thing...
Stating "it is just my opinion" to me, does not mean I am apologizing, I just feel i am being respectful. Everyone does things differently..
Have a good day!

Let's get back to the topic at hand shall we?!!

cool biggrin

It is very exciting, and you are right...we are a bit off topic...(I took part in that also)
I am more than happy to get back ON topic....
And more than ready for him to get these new tunes out to us!!!
