And there it is. The bold sentence above is the most plausible "reality" of his past public persona. I agree with that observation: Very possibly, it was all business.


For those that don't know him personally, I don't think his controversial lyrics, extreme androgyny, or "I wish there were no rules" slogans should be considered as anything more than clever plans to sell his product to a massive audience....specific gimmicks, if U will, that were unlike many that had been seen from musical entertainers before (with the exception of the Little Richard/Jimi Hendrix look of Purple Rain era). Which is not bad, but, in my opinion, obviously created to absorb the audiences that weren't already dominated by his main, male, Pop star competition (i.e. Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Rick James, etc).

Prince is not the first entertainer to be a so-called "edgy" person on-stage to gain particular fan-bases, then become or return to someone else off-stage who may or may not personally associate with individuals similar to those same "fans." That reality is not offensive to me, and I will always appreciate Prince and others as exceptional musical talents, since I know that imagery involved with publicly marketing a product is not always based on truth or authenticity.

For example: Michael Jackson was a main commercial spokesperson for Pepsi starting in the 1980s. After viewing those awesome commercials, consumers would believe that Pepsi is a wonderful cola, especially since Michael Jackson was endorsing it. Now while MJ was dancing and singing "You're a whole new Pepsi generation..." on public TV, it is stated in different biographies that he actually hated Pepsi in private "real life" and would never drink cola (and demanded that he not be shown drinking Pepsi, as one can see in the commercials). On the other hand, MJ was all about making and showing off this sponsorship money in public, but was secretly giving a lot of it away in private "real life" to numerous charities.

This is just an example of how celebrities' "outrageous" public lives should not always be taken so seriously, since majority of consumers will never really know if the entertainers really believe in what they are marketing. This can go both ways regarding Prince since he is so mysterious: I know one can flip my perspective around and claim his current public JW faith is not "real" either since he's making it public now (which I would disagree with because of certain private evidence). But I believe he is at the point where the man on-stage is the same as the one off (unlike the possible two or more "Princes" of the 80s and 90s), since I don't think he is still in the business game to make money as he was when he "wished we all were nude." If he was not misquoted, with this opinion in mind, I was definitely not surprised by his responses in this interview. Since there has been a lot of evidence that Prince believes in Jehovah at home, I believe its "real" when he says he does in public now.
