The song is BANGIN'....the video didn't match the song....hated the chick in it. Only thing I enjoyed besides the song was seeing Prince but was disappointed he didn't dance or move much. Hope he moves more tonite on SNL.

One clarification on the PHARELL COMPARISON:

Of course Prince came first. Of course Prince's legacy will be much greater.

But guys like Pharell or Andre 3000 are making him sound old TODAY. Just like James Brown became irrelevant in the 1980s when Prince and others took over. Face it or not, that is a fact. And it does not imply that Prince and JB are not among the greatest artists of the 20th century...

I am simply talking about relevance in TODAY's music world. And there is no doubt that any Pharell song (Frontin is one, Let's get blown is another, I could quote quite a few -note that I am not even a huge Pharell fan) sounds fresher and more innovative than Black Sweat. Watching the video, I had the odd
feeling that even Prince himself does not seem to really believe in the song. He seems to have lost his faith over the past 10 years (Rainbow Children being an exception, for good reasons: he may have lost his faith in human beings, his faith in wild sex, but he has found a true faith in Jehovah...that's why he really poured his heart into TRC)

great post.

pharell is credited and raved about cos he's making great tunes that remind people of that once great artist....prince. he NEVER denies he's a prince freak. now prince doing 'old prince' is a brave move and unfortunatley i'm not sure it works. this sounds ok. but not as good as what pharell has done with the 'old prince sound'.

The Kiss comparisons are absurd. Prince couldn't duplicate that song if he wanted to. He can't even get the sound and arrangement right in concert.

Judge the song on it's own merits. It's a jam!! So many people are quick to deconstruct it, change it and hope for some other mystery sound. Pharell, Missy, Southern rap, etc. are already sounding dated. They all drink out of Prince's cup. Who wants to sound completely contemporary. Try listening to the radio for an hour without having your intelligence and ear offended. How many songs can there be about gold damn fronts.

The challenges of a 30 year career. Prince is doing fine because his musical mind is always wandering.

Hey how do you capture streaming video? That is cool! I have a Mac!

Thanks!

Any screen-capture program should work. I use Snag-It. I can do captures of whatever is on my screen and then crop the image. So if there's a video playing, most screen-capture programs will snag the video too. You just gotta time it so you get the video frame that you want.

I'm not familiar with what capture programs will work with a Mac, but I know they exist and they work the same way.

Hope this helps.

thanks I'll check it out, I watched it on my friend's PC, I wonder why MTV isnt supporting the Apples. Weird, becuase the Mac is for the musicians!

No. Prince is not following trends. This track sounding very Neptunish? lol Oh my, I needed that laugh. Can U say, The Neptunes sounding very Prince-ish? Game Over.

Hmm. Living up to your username pretty well there smile Pure Prince-fan fantasy I'm afraid.

Whatever Prince's influence on contemporary urban music (and we could argue that all day) Prince has been quiet for a long time and hasn't been a huge musical influence on anyone. Fact is, there's a whole iPod-owning generation who has never even heard of the guy. So let's not get carried away here.

With regard to the Neptunes guys... they bring a lot more to the table than a few Prince albums and I for one don't hear such a huge influence. On the other hand, if you were doing a "pop music family tree" it wouldn't take long to trace the roots of Black Sweat (the video, and the song) back to a bunch of recent hits including a few with Neptunes involvement.

Don't be bummed by it - there's nothing embarrassing about it. Prince is a middled-aged guy now; so how the hell can he be expected to compete with these young cats and still seem hip? All in all, he's done a pretty decent job of sounding fairly contemporary, if perhaps missing out on a radio-friendly hook that might have sealed the deal.

Without wishing to state the obvious, Prince didn't invent funk, or soul, or hiphop, or R&B. He didn't invent singing in falsetto. His music has been influential, but let's not go claiming that everything even slightly funky comes indirectly from Prince. I'm no fan of marketing, but Prince is a professional musician, and there's no shame in Prince adapting his "product" occasionally to fit current market trends and tastes.

"long time and hasn't been a huge musical influence on anyone"

He influnced the "Neptunes and about a half a dozen other produces. You got a serious ear issue if you don't hear it. Prince is an influnce on artist today and most can only wish they can hang around as long as he has.

What's that? Of course he can't, that groove is totally studio. So unless he just uses a pre-recorded loop, he just has to do it different live.

Damn!!! Talk about some serious criticism goin' on UP IN HERE!!! U either like it or U don't. No use losing zzzlp over it... The video isn't 1/2 bad, the girl isn't 1/2 bad, prince don't LQQK 1/2 bad, & the song ain't 1/2 bad... However most of those doin' the commenting never did a video X-cept @ 4 family functions, LQQK worse than the girl, definitely LQQK worse than prince (2day, yesterday, & probably in the future), & never wrote a song that got air play, video play, nor garnered this much conversation. So in essence prince did his JOB... He got all U folks talkin' about it... Music is 2 B seen & heard in this new millenium... He made U LQQK, he made U listen, & now U talkin' about it... In my eyes..., Brotha Man Is On His MO FRIGGIN' JOB!!! HOLLA!!!

I'm ok with the dress I just don't like the color. In the photo shoot you can tell it's some sort of maroon/red thing eek

Hello all, hope u r all well.

I should preface this by saying that I am a 41 year old black male who lives in the inner city of Kansas City, Kansas. I have long been a reaper of the benefits of the Prince musical experience. I am a church organist for a congregation of just over 50 people. I write the music and lyrics of 99% of all the music (and poetry) performed in my church.

I like the new video and song. On a scale of 1 to 10 of all music it is a 7. On a scale of 1 to 10 on Prince music, it is a 4. Still, I like it, not love it. I think it is one of the weakest Prince songs ever made. But, a wake Prince song beats the heck out of 90% of everything on the radios, in all genres, these days.

My point... I first talk about myself, because I KNOW about that subject. THEN, I tell you what I THINK about the music.

Whatever all that means.

Good day. Join me in enjoying the SNL show 2nite. bye

What you mean by recapture? confuse The last time I checked some of his black fans followed Prince when he went crossover and still even so to this day. Yes some were disappointed with certain albums and also he was criticized of the type of women he had in his videos and during that period, but not all so stop generalizing. Also Prince had been giving props to women of color in his videos long before Black Sweat. If you think Black Sweat is his way of recapturing the black audience then you are seriously wrong dude. biggrin

Go to a Prince concert and tell me if you see any Blacks.

Not the spitting image, I know, but Nina Simone came to my mind when I saw that part of the video.

And DAMN! She's got a big mouth! I love it.
[Edited 2/2/06 18:46pm]

I already stated this over at HQ.com. Not the spitting image I had in mind either. I repeat I wonder what's this suppose to mean using dark-skinned women in his video for a change. Now everybody talks about Mani not being attractive. This girl in the video is definitely not attractive. There are plenty of other women that look better than her and are not light-skinned to could've been in the video. This is a far stretch from the old Prince who wouldn't have a girl browner than a paper bag in his videos/movies. After seeing this, it's a new day brugh. I could've been the girl in this video.

You can't have a song that funky and not bust a single move.

Everybody was discussing his non-dancing over at HQ. Maybe this was after his hip-replacement surgery. Maybe he was suppose to take it easy.

I am not trying to start a race issue but I must say it is refreshing of seeing the dark-skinned sista in the spotlight and the light-skinned sista in the background. Most videos. especially in hip-hop and R&B videos today dark-skinned sistas they are either tokens or in the background or isn't around. I am giving Prince some love for being bold and showing some love for us darker-skinned sistas. IMHO she is beautiful, classy. and she can move too. Her and Prince have a great video chemistry. I like the song and the video. music

He's only doing that because he's trying to recapture Black fans that he shitted on back when he was big.

Agreed 100%. Like I said earlier he wouldn't have had this back when he was younger and that was by his choice, not by anyone elses. The only women he messed with back then that was black or shall I say have black that is was Vanity and Troy Beyer. But you had to had something else in you, you couldn't be 100% black.

That I disagree with you on. There a many a black folk at Prince's concert and not only blacks, but whites, asians, hispanics, the list goes on. He does have a diverse audience. Prince has been a musical influence, maybe just not to you. I've been to his concerts 3 times. The question is have you been there?

As far as the person saying Prince had being giving props to all women of color before Black Sweat make an example for me cuz I don't know what chu talkin' about. This is the first time I have ever seen the darkest, BLACKEST woman in his video as the vixen.

That's ridiculous. There, I said it.

If she were lighter skin, there'd be plenty of people who'd say she was hot, and just as many who'd say she wasn't. It has nothing to do with her having darker skin.
