or according to this video...DIDN'T HE?

i smell a waft of 1986 here....yet it's 2006.

Sorry, but that waft you're smelling isn't from 1986.
This is about as far removed from his '86 canon as you can get.

Kiss worked because it was a well written and arranged melody.

Black Sweat has absolutely no melody, and will sound tired very quickly.

I don't think anyone under 25 (okay, very few compared to the amount of people who would care about a Lil Jon song) will care about a prince song.....

I disagree. And what would you say about "Bob George" and the melody there?

To me its a cross between the two and after listening to it a couple times over a couple days, it will be a Prince classic.

I would say Bob George is the lone exception to the rule.

As for it being a Prince classic....hey, if you like it more power to you. I'm glad it works for you, and you're entitled to your opinion. As am I, that it's a very lazy sounding vamp.

But to say it has anything in common with the Parade-era music the he and the Revolution were doing is simply ridiculous.

Hey how do you capture streaming video? That is cool! I have a Mac!

Thanks!

Any screen-capture program should work. I use Snag-It. I can do captures of whatever is on my screen and then crop the image. So if there's a video playing, most screen-capture programs will snag the video too. You just gotta time it so you get the video frame that you want.

I'm not familiar with what capture programs will work with a Mac, but I know they exist and they work the same way.

Hope this helps.

Command+Shift+3 takes a screen capture. Open it up in Preview and crop it down. Presto!

I am getting the impression that there are 2 destinct Sides to this Video/Song.....no real solid middle ground. People either love it or hate it.

Meh; didn't like the song or video.

This song doesn't compare to any tracks on Musicology. After the disappointing Te Amo Corazon and this song, 3121 is going to be a letdown.

A letdown kinda like The Rainbow Children?

i like it a lot. sometimes it takes a while for a prince song to grow on me - this one did right away. i like the space in the song - i think that is why people are thinking of kiss. also he and one female dancer in a bare room with just a chair reminds me of the kiss video. i think it might catch on commercially - if that matters.

I think you are right.

Honestly, I first said this won't be a hit, but its a good Prince song. Now, I think its exactly what the top hits that are Prince INSPIRED offer, except its Prince.

Very interesting video.

You all know that Prince based the Time on the men of his father's generation, the guys who'd dress all spiffy fine, older yes but still seductive. When he started that, it was mockingly, but lovingly so.

Well, he's reached that certain age and I think he's decided that showing his age and acting it is sexy. That he doesn't have to be all explicit and kinetically, overactively seductive. That less is more, and that a touch of grey stubble on the chin is not a problem. He's not ready to show grey on the side but he's definitely going for that more mature sexiness. A lot of women, some quite young, go for that -- in fact, many I know go weak for them.

After a day I think the song is deceptively catchy. There's no point in expecting a Kiss or WDC -- these songs were great not only by themselves, but because of the music of the time. Here we are in well-kown territory, but it's done rather expertly. I think it could do well commercially.

What he said. thumbs up!

Not the spitting image, I know, but Nina Simone came to my mind when I saw that part of the video.

And DAMN! She's got a big mouth! I love it.

I noticed when I watched the video on MTV's site in Internet Explorer, that there was a 16mb ".dat" file in my temporary files for Black Sweat. Though I could not open it, and when I tried to change the extension to ".wmv" it would bring up some dialog about licenses.

Yeah, I got a message about licenses when I d/led this video from VH-1. Something about backing up license information or some such thing.

Nice but too bad Pharell is better at doing these kinds of songs (Frontin is more of a hit)...

Excuse me, but, Frontin' is treading in Prince territory. Get it straight. Let's go back 2 at least the 1999 album. Must I point out (D.M.S.R. or Lady Cab Driver). How about the song S-E-X on the Scandalous Sex Suite EP. Pharrell was still in school when these songs came out. So, I repeat Pharrell is treading in Prince territory. Prince is merely showing us who created that sound and of course that creator is Prince. Can I get an Amen from somebody. Thank you.

Ok I see he is going in that Pharell direction, which is cool. The song is really cool. LOVE the video. But at the same time I know Prince is so much more talented than this song.

But I like it though. I think it will do better that Te Amo Corazon expecialy with the MTV crowd.

And OMG how sexy did my honey Prince look? lol

How old are these people who are saying that Prince is going in the Pharrell direction? WAKE UP, Pharrell goes in Prince's direction. Dang. Listen to Nasty Girl by Vanity 6 (1982). Then pop in Slave 4 U by Britney Spears (2001). Listen to any minimalist funk Prince songs from the 1980's. Listen to Frontin' by Pharrell (2003). Listen to 777-9311 by The Time (1982). Listen to I'm Loving It by Justin Timberlake (2003). And Love You Girl by Robin Thicke (2005) is also 90% rehash of minimalist funk Prince songs from the 1980's. Let's break it down like this: Nasty Girl, 777-9311, and the minimalist 1980s funk songs were all written, produced, arranged, and actually performed by PRINCE. Slave 4 U, Frontin', I'm Loving It, and Love You Girl were written, produced, and sometimes performed by Pharrell (as part of the Neptunes). Just listen and ask yourself "Who's going in who's direction". My answer would be Pharrell is going in Prince's direction. Not the other way around.

I think, although I might be wrong, that Prince is done dancing. Maybe somewhere along the line, he injured himself (perhaps in the early NPG days?).

There have been rumors, but thankfully Prince was always more a musician who could put on a REALLY good show dancing. Now, he just puts on a really good show musically.

And while we're on the subject of Pharrell (and I'm not hatin' on the brother because I love his work, too), he even sample those earlier Prince sounds, too. Come on, people. That right there is a dead give away. And when Frontin' came out, guess who he was being compared to? Da, da, da, da! PRINCE!!! There you go. Game Over.
