i haven't heard the song yet, but if he's channeling "kiss" like some are sayin, this could mean only 1 thing.... he's had enough of the "add water and stir radio" and said 2 himself "awright, i think the world needs some "funk" in it's diet"... lol wink now since he's feelin funky again could some rock guitar be far behind or maybe slipped from a vault? by now i'm happy 2 expect the unexpected from our hero, but like many others i just wanna hear him rock at least 1 more time....

Hey, just checked out Black Sweat. Good fun!

I don't really care about music videos too much, but this one seems to do the job just fine. The song is rather silly and could probably use a melodic hook of some kind, but overall it sounds fairly contemporary if slightly dull. I admit, I found myself hoping Prince would break out a little guitar or bass solo or something to liven it up smile Like Te Amo Corazon, it sounds like Prince on autopilot, but it is still enjoyable nonetheless.

I'm not complaining. Good to see Prince doing some new stuff. I missed that stripped-down electrofunk thing!

Yeah I guess you could say this is another example of Prince chasing pop trends instead of setting them. But at his age, with his amount of years in the business, it is an achievement to still be in the game at all. It does sound and look very Neptunes, but at least he isn't wearing assless yellow pants or something smile What I mean is, it looks and sounds reasonably contemporary, has a nice young lady dancing about, and it gets Prince back on MTV. So it isn't bad at all.

Maybe it's only me, but doesn't that chair Prince is sitting on look a tad suggestive in shape? Or - something? And then how that dancer starts caressing it on the inside? Makes me think certain...thoughts. lol

Not unless you consider a chair shaped as an upside down version of the female pleasure center suggestive. wink

And how pimp is it to be sitting on the clitoral hood, peeping over a magazine like you can deliver without prep time while your girl “gets the car started” with labial stimulation; almost as funky as these 3 inches desperately in need of 12.

Prince has shot himself in the “good foot” a lot lately (“Hot Wit U”, “Life ‘O’ the Party”, “Mr. Happy”) but “Black Sweat” is the genuine article; intelligent, freeze-dried, minimalist funk with tasteful smatterings of spine-tingling synth bass that earns its stripes, its swagger, its ass bobbing testimonials delivered at the handle of a cup of tea.

And every great dance track needs at least one out-of-body experience that makes you oblivious to that sweat stain working its way up your backside or unconscious to the hateful glares the stranger you’re assaulting on the subway is shooting in your direction. Here the nirvana springs forth from the Prince announced “breakdown” with 43 seconds to go. Time slows down, your grand mama’s lampshade spins with pinpoint lights, all become great dancers, and absolutely nothing is out of reach.

One of Prince’s finest moments on the dance floor; if Prince were 25 it would be a surefire smash. At 47 and with countless commercial missteps over the past decade I’m still holding on to the notion that he has to deliver one of the great songs of the century (“When Doves Cry” or “Kiss”) to overcome the overwhelming odds of such a narrow, superficial marketplace.

Regardless of such trivialities, I’ll be forever moving in “one…two…three”.

Brendan

Not true.

Funk doesn't have to be devoid of melody like this 'song' is.

And how dare you tell me that I look down on RnB and Funk. You don't know me at all. Don't tell me what I like and don't like.

Well, you, do not tell us what to like or not as well. It seems that it is pissing a few fans off here that the response is so positive to this new track.
There is a lot of enthusiasm because Black Sweat is an instant Prince classic. Sorry if you do not enjoy it. wink
[Edited 2/3/06 6:19am]

When did I *ever* tell anybody what to like or not like?

And believe me, if other people like the song, that's great. I've already said that. But that doesn't mean that I'm not entitled to my opinion too. Don't get mad just because everybody doesn't like the latest Prince single.

Still watching this thing. Can't get enough. Just a great video. So sparse in visuals, yet just a great video.

He just looks real good.

Then I thought about it. Two videos so far, and the album's not even out yet. I have HIGH expectations now. Prince seems very much behind promoting 3121.

I'm ready right now.

now its starting to remind me of The Daisy Chain for some reason. But as far as Prince following trends.. The Neptunes are influenced by P in the first place. So is he really following?

Yes this is what I ment to say. Obviously Prince was the one who invented this electric funk sound and Pharell is obviously inspired by him but what I ment was this is what Pharell is doing now and Prince hasn't done this style in a while so...but it does sound more Neptunes than old Prince. But I do love the song! biggrin

Obviously A Time to Love was a big disapointment...although I would certainly not say that all tracks on it were weaker than Black Sweat (there were a few pretty good track actually). Plus such comparison would be unfair since Stevie has never produced tracks like Black Sweat anyway during his whole career (this is simply not his style, while it is definitely Prince's...except that Prince and even other younger guns have done far better than this on many occasions)

Once again I am amazed at your enthousiasm for this song, even though I am happy for you guys! I mean come on, it is no better than a track like Sex me Sex me Not which many of you more or less flamed a few years ago: maybe your expectations have become so low since then that you are now ready to swallow what you would have rejected 5 years ago. Problem is I am not ready, I cannot give up my expectations when it comes to guys like Prince or Stevie

I am even more amazed that some people think it will be a hit: either they are getting too old to remember clubs and charts, or they must be kidding...

Sex me baby sex me not is what a mediocre funk track sounds like. A MJ b side. Just load up a rhythm track on your drum machine and play short stabs on your sample layered keyboard. There you go....

Black Sweat is when great groove, timing and feel come together. I really like it and i'm quite critical of his stuff ("workin up a black sweat".... "willing to do the work").

I dont know about hits anymore. It used to be about music, what people liked. It seems more what is on block repeat on stations relates to chart positions. Im more aware now of the business dealings just to get this heard on my local station and it takes the fun out of it.

"Kiss" worked because a) it was a great SONG, b) the production was like NOTHING else ever heard, c) the video was original, and of course d) Prince still had heat in '86.

This one? Not grabbing me. To each his own.

??? Did I hear the right song ?

To my ears this is minimalist mid-tempo easy listening funk, not minimalist dirty nasty funk a la Kiss, When Doves Cry, Feel U up or Erotic City. It is a nice little funky song but it remains 10 zillion light years away (I am a Stevie fan) from his best funk tracks and from what a few others have done over the past few years. In particular, the production is clean but brings no novelty at all...which is a problem when on the other hand the chorus is forgettable and the musicianship minimal.

But if most of you feel differently, great. It just does not do it for me, but maybe my expectations are too high. Or maybe I am bored with Prince.

I have to agree with you. I was expecting something way funkier. This song will only be a hit to overzealous fans. It is the weakest funk song Prince has ever released. Sounds like an artist that has run out of ideas. How any one can actually believe this is better than Musicology baffles me. The slow song was much better written.

Also I noticed that the girl DJ appeared to have a sign on the front of her equipment (mixing board? whatever it's called) displaying the Egyptian symbol of the Eye of Horus.

Excerpt from a website about the Eye of Horus: "...was the eye of the falcon-god Horus, son of the goddess Isis. The Egyptian pharoah was thought to be the god Horus incarnate. A symbol of perfection and well-being, it was a powerful amulet worn for protection against evil in ancient Egypt."

Black Sweat does remind me of a Neptunes production but much more refined and polished. The tempo doesn't sound like the standard 4/4.

Also I'm glad he had a sista doing her thang in the video. I really think he's making a statement with this video. Look at most of the video's out today especially in R&B and Hip-Hop, you got these women on here looking like an episode of HBO Real Sex. It shows that you can be sexy and mature without selling your sex. And to all those who were trashing the young lady in video calling her a Drag Queen, shut yo mouth!!! My girl is working it!!!!
