Moxy

For me, something is missing with this track. There was a time when Prince would put together a much better package. It seems that money and fame has softened him some, and there is a definitive edge that is missing. Musicology was a much more intelligent production which made up for the lack of danceable tracks. Although it is much better than TAC, I hope this is not the best 3121 has to offer...The Video on the other hand, is quite stimulating. Why is it when I see Prince performing, I always feel he's holding back on something cuz he just doesn't feel we are ready for, it's time to come undone!!

Umm, hate to tell ya this, it's his ONLY video since Te Amo Corozon.

Dang, and there was me thinking you were all that n chit after your post too!

Wow - I guess being a fan since the first album doesn't make peeps so special after all, eh? lol

If U would have noticed that I had to tell jone70 as well as you that was just a lil jokey joke. I am glad that you noticed that I did say I was a fan from the beginning.I guess I better stop making with the jokes and be serious all the time, man!!!

Either that or make your jokes funnier. j.k. lol

I don't know about a Neptunes vibe. I think it's more old school Prince. Something i've been waiting for. I havent felt this way about a Prince Jam since Gett off!

Buttox

This is the best song I've heard from a Prince album since the Hits/ The B sides.....easily. The hook is in the wailing synth, the minimalist guitar likety split and the little touches are what make this one great....It may be a one off because TAC was so so but it's great to hear truly classy song writing from Prince again after such a long hiatus. He looks like he's making music for music's sake again as opposed to selfishly for his own ego trip or whatever.

Has the worm finally turned?

Yeah I guess you could say this is another example of Prince chasing pop trends instead of setting them. But at his age, with his amount of years in the business, it is an achievement to still be in the game at all. It does sound and look very Neptunes, but at least he isn't wearing assless yellow pants or something smile What I mean is, it looks and sounds reasonably contemporary, has a nice young lady dancing about, and it gets Prince back on MTV. So it isn't bad at all.

now its starting to remind me of The Daisy Chain for some reason. But as far as Prince following trends.. The Neptunes are influenced by P in the first place. So is he really following?

No. Prince is not following trends. This track sounding very Neptunish? lol Oh my, I needed that laugh. Can U say, The Neptunes sounding very Prince-ish? Game Over.

Okay, I've decided the song is too short. It should be longer.

I think I saw the girl from the Black Sweat video in the Musicology video. She's dancing behind Prince. Can anyone confirm this?

Just saw the video at MTV...the video is great...but it has the same problem of ´Musicology´ IMHO...there isn´t a catchy melody (and the chorus reminds me a lot of The Work pt1). The song has no bass...it´s only a beat...songs like Kiss and When Doves Cry didn´t have bass also, but the melody was strong...I am afraid this one won´t be a hit also...

But looking at the positive side...the production is good. It doesn´t sound ´old´
[Edited 2/2/06 13:31pm]

Exactly. I think this clearly proves that any involvement W&L was rumoured to have has been put to bed, unfortunately.

I'm afraid that all the mindless funk vamps he's been doing for so long has really dulled his songwriting craft.

Mind you, I could care less if the song is a 'hit'. I'd just like to hear an actual "song".

The rumors of W&L hooking up with our boy may have some substance...Wait until the tour opens...

Dang some of you guys are so cold on the video girl. lol To each their own.
I am not trying to start a race issue but I must say it is refreshing of seeing the dark-skinned sista in the spotlight and the light-skinned sista in the background. Most videos. especially in hip-hop and R&B videos today dark-skinned sistas they are either tokens or in the background or isn't around. I am giving Prince some love for being bold and showing some love for us darker-skinned sistas. IMHO she is beautiful, classy. and she can move too. Her and Prince have a great video chemistry. I like the song and the video. music

What you mean by recapture? confuse The last time I checked some of his black fans followed Prince when he went crossover and still even so to this day. Yes some were disappointed with certain albums and also he was criticized of the type of women he had in his videos and during that period, but not all so stop generalizing. Also Prince had been giving props to women of color in his videos long before Black Sweat. If you think Black Sweat is his way of recapturing the black audience then you are seriously wrong dude. biggrin

Hmm. Living up to your username pretty well there smile Pure Prince-fan fantasy I'm afraid.

Whatever Prince's influence on contemporary urban music (and we could argue that all day) Prince has been quiet for a long time and hasn't been a huge musical influence on anyone. Fact is, there's a whole iPod-owning generation who has never even heard of the guy. So let's not get carried away here.

With regard to the Neptunes guys... they bring a lot more to the table than a few Prince albums and I for one don't hear such a huge influence. On the other hand, if you were doing a "pop music family tree" it wouldn't take long to trace the roots of Black Sweat (the video, and the song) back to a bunch of recent hits including a few with Neptunes involvement.

Don't be bummed by it - there's nothing embarrassing about it. Prince is a middled-aged guy now; so how the hell can he be expected to compete with these young cats and still seem hip? All in all, he's done a pretty decent job of sounding fairly contemporary, if perhaps missing out on a radio-friendly hook that might have sealed the deal.

Without wishing to state the obvious, Prince didn't invent funk, or soul, or hiphop, or R&B. He didn't invent singing in falsetto. His music has been influential, but let's not go claiming that everything even slightly funky comes indirectly from Prince. I'm no fan of marketing, but Prince is a professional musician, and there's no shame in Prince adapting his "product" occasionally to fit current market trends and tastes.

Diggin' the video woot! but I agree that his hair stylist needs a bit of an ass kicking - just the tip of the shoe though, not that bad lol There was one point about 2/3 of the way through that the editing got a little slow to me & I wish they'd done more but overall I think it's pretty damn good thumbs up!

As stated earlier, her clothes were fuckin' wacky sometimes - that sequined dress should have been skin tight to look right, shit like that. And I would have liked to see Princey all sweaty on his face/neck/chest horny
I can dream, bitches razz
