That's the kind of stuff I used to hear when singles like Kiss and SOTT were released back in the day.
Black Sweat is at the level of Prince's great 80s singles. It is 100% infectious dirty funk.
Great Tune.

2 true, dirty funk is what most of us wanted from him if not all off us, and dirty funk is what he has delivered, hats off Prince.

That's right! Dirty funk! I love this song! I was expecting another slow boring latin balled!
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

??? Did I hear the right song ?

To my ears this is minimalist mid-tempo easy listening funk, not minimalist dirty nasty funk a la Kiss, When Doves Cry, Feel U up or Erotic City. It is a nice little funky song but it remains 10 zillion light years away (I am a Stevie fan) from his best funk tracks and from what a few others have done over the past few years. In particular, the production is clean but brings no novelty at all...which is a problem when on the other hand the chorus is forgettable and the musicianship minimal.

But if most of you feel differently, great. It just does not do it for me, but maybe my expectations are too high. Or maybe I am bored with Prince.

Just saw the video at MTV...the video is great...but it has the same problem of ´Musicology´ IMHO...there isn´t a catchy melody (and the chorus reminds me a lot of The Work pt1). The song has no bass...it´s only a beat...songs like Kiss and When Doves Cry didn´t have bass also, but the melody was strong...I am afraid this one won´t be a hit also...

But looking at the positive side...the production is good. It doesn´t sound ´old´
[Edited 2/2/06 13:31pm]

Exactly. I think this clearly proves that any involvement W&L was rumoured to have has been put to bed, unfortunately.

I'm afraid that all the mindless funk vamps he's been doing for so long has really dulled his songwriting craft.

Mind you, I could care less if the song is a 'hit'. I'd just like to hear an actual "song".

-----
Some of you guys are just Snobs. You really look down on RnB and Funk. That is your opinion and you have a right to have it but why don't you just get off the Purple Bandwagon. Funk is the root of P's music and his black for goodness sake.

This is a hot track that will get a lot of play in the clubs. Black music is lacking good uptempo funk tracks. So in my opinion this is right on time.

I can't wait for a good remix or to hear him do this live.

You're so right! I think even Prince is starting to realize that thís is his style. You can't copy that. No other artist can pull off this kind of funk right now. Pharrell and Kanye West come close, but they're not funky people, they make funky music sometimes.

-----
Pharrell and Kanye West they don't even come close. They just do not have that sense of rhythm that P has.

That shit is hot! In some ways, at least to me, it sounds like a minimalist re-interpretation of Sex Me, Sex Me Not. I'm DIGGIN this shit. It'll be a hot dance track in the clubs, especially with the remixes that are bound to come. And I think this video will be spun, baby, spun.

If THIS is a portent of things to come with 3121, I'm quite happy.

Absolute class! At last! Ah, the relief is almost gushing through my body! To invest so much admiration and belief into an artist is like supporting your own football team - and when (after several pretty naff results) they deliver, its so damned fulfilling.

This is Prince's first killer (single) tune in a while - I digged Musicology, for its minimalistic funk approach, but this wipes the floor.

I'm not a fan of video's but this is a smart, tasty and prime Prince display - no-one delivers better facial expressions!

Ahhh, what a chief that man is.

????? I would say this is never going to be played in clubs (except if accompanied by a great maxi single) Do you really know clubs ????? Or do you remember them from the 1980s-early 1990s ? Anyway I sincerely hope I am wrong and you are right

And BTW I am certainly no snob, I love RnB and funk genuinely (I can dance my ass of to Pharell, Andre 3000, the JBs, Cameo, EWF, even Kelis or Britney sometimes...)

Not true.

Funk doesn't have to be devoid of melody like this 'song' is.

And how dare you tell me that I look down on RnB and Funk. You don't know me at all. Don't tell me what I like and don't like.

That's it ! You are bored ! MOVE ON and go listening to A TIME 2 LOVE.
I love Stevie but there is not one track on A TIME 2 LOVE that is nowhere near Black Sweat, as infectious as this track.
But it does not mean 3121 will be a good album obviously. It's too early to say.

Well, you, do not tell us what to like or not as well. It seems that it is pissing a few fans off here that the response is so positive to this new track.
There is a lot of enthusiasm because Black Sweat is an instant Prince classic. Sorry if you do not enjoy it. wink

Omg! This song has to be his best in sooo long, i was so scared it was gonna be horns and lite funk, but this is the real shit, I really can't wait for this album now, and I really can see this song being a huge hit.

Classic? maybe, but for sure on the same level as his early 80's stuff, sounds kinda 1998 "new power soul" mixed with "dirty mind" loving it sooooo much!!!!! wooohooo

"working up a black sweat" biggrin

Why do so many people try to draw too much meaning out of one song. I like the funky, dirty, demo-like, underproduced throwaway quality of it. Prince promised an album that would appeal to his loyal following but I'm beginning to think this is impossible because of the musical diversity he represents and has attracted.

One person's Parade is another's LoveSexy.

And TAC will fit in nicely with the rest of material on 3121!

Obviously A Time to Love was a big disapointment...although I would certainly not say that all tracks on it were weaker than Black Sweat (there were a few pretty good track actually). Plus such comparison would be unfair since Stevie has never produced tracks like Black Sweat anyway during his whole career (this is simply not his style, while it is definitely Prince's...except that Prince and even other younger guns have done far better than this on many occasions)

Once again I am amazed at your enthousiasm for this song, even though I am happy for you guys! I mean come on, it is no better than a track like Sex me Sex me Not which many of you more or less flamed a few years ago: maybe your expectations have become so low since then that you are now ready to swallow what you would have rejected 5 years ago. Problem is I am not ready, I cannot give up my expectations when it comes to guys like Prince or Stevie

I am even more amazed that some people think it will be a hit: either they are getting too old to remember clubs and charts, or they must be kidding...

Maybe the diversity will be the whole feel of the album, Black Sweat is massively different to TAC.

I must admit, I quite liked it, although its very hard to tell what will be a hit these days. However, whether it bombs or flies, the fact that I like it is all that counts to me. Don't need no chart position to tell me what music I like!

You don't get the point mate. With Black Sweat he is succeeding musically where he had failed with Silicone and Sex me sex me not. he has found the right balance, the right beat, the right groove, the right funk, the right beat. It is James Brown version electrofunk. I love it ! razz

BTW I do not think A Time 2 Love was a disappointment. It is not a great album but it is better than anything you hear at the moment on the radio !

well said. by today's standards, it's not a club hit. given prince's track record, this isn't a breakthrough.

at best, it's catchier than any single he's released in years - i hope it does well for him, and i'm really excited to see what he does with it on SNL.

but i wouldn't get my hopes up for this to be his comeback hit single, unless he has a plan to goose the singles chart the way he goosed the album charts with the musicology album. smile
