I'm predicting that it'll definitely be Billie Jean/Beat It VS. When Doves Cry/1999

One more Madonna song and maybe a Kool & The Gang song will get in.

10 Prince Kiss
9 Prince, When Doves Cry
8. Madonna, Like A Virgin THAT ONE RECEIVED THE 166 SPOT
7. The Cure, Friday I'm in Love (Were a morbid lot aren't we)
6. Beat It, Michael Jackson
5. 1999, Prince
4. Madonna, Papa don't preach
3. Prince, Purple Rain

I am not happy with it. As with the singles, I only checked two of my three resources, so I feel they are incomplete. But what the heck!

Come one, come all to the results of the 80s Poll! As usual, I will start with the song results. Most individual lists can be seen at the poll page.

This means that album lists are still welcome! Until the song results are fully posted, I'm happy to accept more album lists at the poll page.

This poll has seen a huge jump in participation, perhaps because the 80s is a decade that is very beloved by the posters of Music: Non-Prince. To illustrate just how big of a jump it was, here is the history of the song polls:

2000s: 20 ballots, 1838 song votes
1990s: 15 ballots, 1770 song votes
1980s: 31 ballots, 3969 song votes!

Because I got such great participation, the list deserves better treatment than previous lists. As such, I'll individually count down the top 200 songs that you all have chosen as the best cuts from the 80s!

It is really my pleasure to present these results. Thank you to all of the participants:

In the late 70s and early 80s, never had "black music" and "white music" been so far apart. Culminating in the whole "Disco Sucks" shenanigans, musical segregation hindered the airwaves and even video screens once MTV launched. It took a few trailblazers to get the ball rolling, none more in the spotlight than Mr. Jackson.

There was some other little guy on the scene, too, who was aiming to break down barriers. His scope was perhaps even higher, aiming to unite not only races, but sexuality and spirituality. Such a marriage could well be considered a thesis statement for this guy's career, and this song is perhaps the apex of this sentiment, with lyrics doubling as both celebration in the midst of war and spiritual preparation for the End Times. The first song with 3 top 3 votes. Mommy, can I have some more of this?

Born out of desperation, this song seems to have had providential origins, as the male part of the duo accidentally played the percussion of the track backwards during a bitter fight, leading the orange-cropped androgynous chanteuse to bolt up and belt out the most famous synth line of the 80s and subsequently record the verses of the song in one take. That clapping sound heard during the "oooooh" parts is actually the duo banging picture frames against the wall because they could not afford a claptrap!

A lot of pop acts come and go, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. However, with the help of this song, this starlet cemented her legacy as an icon for the ages. The marriage of the lyrical content with the performer's name in addition to one of the most controversial videos ever made set the stage for an all-time classic.

Meaningful statements can prove to be difficult to make, particularly in the wake of such a dramatic shakeup in personnel. This title track to a sprawling double opus captured lightning in a bottle, its stark soul and curt, cutting commentary sounding as vital today as it did then.

EPIC top10!!! all the usual suspects made it! I appreciate the final comments and all the good work Moonbeam! cool

When Doves Cry, Billie Jean, SOTT, Like a Prayer and Sweet Dreams are perfect for the top5, but I'd have preferred Like a Prayer in the Nº3...

AMAZING SONG LIST!!

Conclusions/Comments
-Prince, Jackson and Madonna basically own the 80s cool
-Prince's 80s songs deserve all these high positions; he was the King of the 80s (I predict that Stevie and Bowie will get the same treatment for the 70s poll lol)
-U2 is not popular here in the org lol
