Org Music Club; Main thread #2

[See new other thread replacing this one http://prince.org/msg/8/287058 - luv4u]

Welcome to The Org Music Club. Our love of Prince brought us to this site, but our limitless love for all music made us regulars in this forum.
On a thread lamenting the almost lost art of mixtapes, ( http://prince.org/msg/8/270434 ) we came up with the idea of putting together a project; send each other mixtapes and discuss them on Org! The list of Orgers underneath got all excited and after some bickering we decided to use the Muxtape site (currently 8track.com) as primary tool for our game.
Even though we cannot enter any new participants, everybody is of course free to join the discussions about our mixtapes.

We like to share to music we love and therefore we use a site that does not enable theft.

The rules for all participants!

A mixtape with a maximum of ten songs.
Name the compilation.
Then, starting in week 28, there will be a weekly new thread with a new muxtape link and an explanation of the compiler to how, what, why, in whatever way they want.
On the separate threads we can discuss the single mixtapes, on this thread we can discuss the rest! I will update this initial post with the links to the individual threads for quick reference.

Here’s the schedule! It's still subject to change. Sander is in charge of the schedule. I will update this post with all the links.

Note about 8tracks.com:

The first time you play the mix it's in the right order as intended by the compiler. After that it shuffles the tracks. Something to do with copyright/legal stuff...

What's a use-by date? We can still reply on that thread, can't we?

In the interest of simplicity, why don't we have a mod axe the original thread and stickify this one?

8tracks.com will do, I guess. But it's no muxtape. confused

You have to cycle through an entire mix to hear a song again, and you can't customize with pretty colors. hmph!

Interesting tidbits from 8tracks:

An objective of the compulsory license is to ensure that a listener's experience is similar to traditional radio and essentially non-interactive (i.e., you can't hear a specific song when you want it), so as not to substitute for music purchase.

Hence, the rules of the compulsory license require that the sequence of playback cannot be pre-determined by a listener, and the listener may also not know what song he or she will hear next (i.e., no pre-announced playlist). Accordingly, a user cannot see the all of the songs included within a playlist at the outset and then fast-forward or rewind to songs of interest (which would make the service interactive). Similarly, there are limits on (a) the number of songs that can be included from any one artist or any one album on a given channel or playlist within a 3-hour period, and (b) the number of tracks that can be skipped per hour on a given channel.

At 8tracks, we feel that there's something unique and compelling in handcrafted programming — as with traditional radio in the 1970s, the mixtape in the 1980s and DJ culture in the 1990s.

And prince.org in the 2000s!

But that's why the shuffle is there and there's a limit on skipping through the tracks.

Another tidbit:

The royalties paid to labels and artists for the use of sound recordings under the compulsory license for webcasting are expensive. The current rate is approximately one-seventh of one cent per track streamed, per listener, increasing to approximately one-fifth of one cent per track streamed by 2010.

We cost them money! omfg

This site is the most reminiscent of muxtape I could find. There are other sites which let you choose a lot of options, colors etc, which really don't have anything to do with the music and only slows it down. 8tracks does however lets you pick a picture for your mixtape! nod I mean, how cool is that? headbang

Under what name? I've uploaded a mix too, for research purposes! :nerd:
It's under Sander. I can listen to both and all other mixes. Click your name on the right, then click the name of your mix (on the left).

Aha, I see (abierman). You haven't selected your tracks yet. You might want to try that again. Even if you already uploaded them. Click "edit mix" and drag them into your playlist.

I already deleted mine..... I think I was impatient: evertime I skipped a song, it takes long for the next song to load!

All is good, I like 8tracks! thumbs up!

I'm with you on preferring muxtape actually! boxed

Other than that, you can't believe how happy I am this little project has kept its head above water after the sinking of muxtape. It's just that we have to resuscitate Matronik. He took one for the team so to speak...

Thanks agian Sander for all the work, and to Paligap for switiching weeks with me. My only concern is that the order of my mix is nearly as important as the songs. But, maybe people will keep that in mind when they read the write up. If it keeps us going, I'm happy.

Mine too. The sequence is absolutely VITAL. I'm very very nervous about 8 track lol I'm going to be pissed if people hear my shit all out of sorts. It will be like the 5th nervous breakdown I've had during this project! lol

He has dial up so I doubt he can upload it, or might not want to invest the time. The best we can probably hope for is that Paris ( lol ) saved it or has a hardcopy he can do something with.

OK. I want to say that I'm a committed "member" of this club even though I am not contributing. I'm a bit bummed about this shuffle thing and I'm depressed because I only got to listen to guitarslinger's once, and I completely missed out on Anxiety and Matronik's muxtapes. cry I know I'm behind the times but damn. Thanks Sander for uploading your mix!

Carry on!

I see. Also, people might want to revisit certain favorite mixes. Two ways for this:

*Orgnote specific orger!
*All those that have had their weeks in the good old days when muxtape was around, are you willing to upload your mix to 8tracks as well? (Yes, I'm asking you Huey, Cinnie, Guitarslinger44, Anxiety, Moonbeam, Matronik! razz) Then edit that link into your original write-up. Or ask Huey to edit it into the startpost above.
