Still there on google cache for now.

Bizarre line of questioning though, "EBONY: I’ve read “The Beautiful Ones” was based on Susannah Melvoin"

who just brings up someone's old girlfriend in front of them??

Got it, thx.

I can't figure how SO MANY words can be remembered by a person even with taking notes, since the innerviews can't be recorded.

And I wonder how much of this is what P really said.

It's a more intereresting intervew than most, but still a lot of what P supposedly said is very confusing to say the least.

So I question the whole process: if u're gonna summerize a conversation from memory won't u at least try to have it make complete sense, keep the non-confusing parts?

I think Prince is doing himself a great disservice by not allowing interviews being recorded: we end-up with recreated conversations that probably put a lot of words in his mouth that weren't even there in the first place.

i'm curious now. did this bandmember go into prince's wardrobe and just take stuff which

he/she then sold to hard rock cafe?

or is it more like they went ahead and sold stuff they already had. like mayte selling his
clothes that she still had kicking about etc.

because if they stole from him, i can see why he would be miffed. if they didn't and just
sold 'their' prince items, it's kinda sad that he makes such a fuss.

either way, he comes across as pretty unpleasant to me, reading this. i mean, ewww neutral

.

Ok so your friends come over and they see a really cool jacket in your closet... They're like oh wow I love this jacket can I have it please?... You give it to them as a FRIEND and next thing U know its on display in some nasty fastfood chain restaurant and your friend made $$$ selling your gift... So that is ok because they didn't steal it from you right? eek

I'm with you on this. Prince was probably less concerned about the monetary loss with the trenchcoat as he was with the loss of trust finding out a friend had gone behind his back to make a quick buck off of something that belonged to him. I don't care how well-off a person is...if I discovered one of my friends had intentionally made money off of me behind my back, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Google "google cache" then open the first link then paste the link of the Ebony page in the URL box. U'll have to do it again for pages 2 and 3.

What does it matter about a coat? Prince has 1000's of coats. It's about money. In fact the whole interview, in subtext was just Prince worrying that he didn't get every dollar available or that someone else may get something and he didn't get a cut. In a perfect world he could hire someone to exploit the catalog for him, but I think he rather enjoys acting like a bigshot putting people on the spot over every little thing remotely assoicated with the thing. In truth, I've seen this type of bullshit before. Prince is a ghetto-azz business manager, feeling his oats over his DELUXE APARTMENT IN THE SKY-YYY. MOVIN ON UP! biggrin

So Prince has 1000 coats why should he worry about the single coat a supposed friend stole and sold for profit? I'm guessing that seems strange to people but maybe you're right, Prince only cares about if he Dickerson called him up and said hey brother I stole your purple rain trench coat and I'm gonna sell it for 10k, I'm gonna give you a piece of the pie. I am sure that would have made it all right with Prince. It's not like he stewed about this in the media before or something. Yeah I guess it's ok that just because Prince is rich that those less well off should be able to pimp shit off him and eat too. There really isn't anything wrong with that right? Yeah so let's move on.

Prince is known to leave his shit everywhere, are we sure it was actually stolen? Sheila E sold his outfits at a garage sale. Mayte sold clothes. I remember Wendy and Lisa referencing some clothes he left with them. Remember the ex-girlfriend who tried to Ebay a jacket Prince gave to her and he blocked the sale? Prince has a history of feeling exploited when anyone profits around him even when they acquired the item legitimately. The entire article is about the same old thing: Money, money, money. I'm soooo important, The Beatles got paid more than me and I've got way more (crap) albums than they do. On and obnoxiously on.

Honestly, if Dez fell on hard times and sold a jacket, it's not THAT big of a deal. Prince has plenty of those bullsht PR jackets. Prince has been (no pun intended) rich too long. He's like those folks in your family who got a good job early in life, and don't remember what's it's like when hard times hit. I would be more impressed if Prince heard Dez needed money and put him to work. Bitching about it later in an interview, just shows how petty and stuck on himself he really is.

I don't find the comments on Eric Leeds that mean.

So he said Clarence was better -- as he said he's outclassed on the bass by that British lady whose name I forget. Maybe even Eric agrees Clarence is better -- doesn't make him a worthless musician.

He actually said, "There’s nothing about Clarence that’s funky," and he was "just a sideman" but his "Aura was huge." He's saying that Eric was the better musician even if he couldn't match Clarence when it came to charisma.

Prince: ...Clarence Clemons don’t play funk. There’s nothing about Clarence that’s funky. He plays old ’50s saxophone that was on those types of records, Frankie Valli and that type of stuff.

If you notice when Eric showed up, it was during the Purple Rain tour. And I was the only soloist in the band if [Matt] Fink wasn’t soloing. And he had his solos that were planned out. He didn’t improvise. There’s the channel and then there’s the practiced, technical way that somebody plays. And Fink, he’s incredible at that: something he’s practiced.

...So there was no other soloist in the band. So Eddie M., one of the horn players, and Eric was brought in. But Clarence Clemons, that’s just a sideman. One of the greatest sidemen in history, and he’s a star in his own right. Them two was nothing like that. C’mon, man. That’s a whole different thing. Clarence’ll smile and you’ll forget every solo Eric ever did. Like Louis Armstrong. Beautiful dude. Aura was huge.

As for pulling the interview, looks like he went back to his own advice and decided to stay mum retroactively.

And judging by the reactions around here, it really does look like he will always be doubted anyway. Damned if you do/don't.

Shame because it was a rare glimpse.

I shouldn’t have read this interview. After the total disappointment of Phase Two, my enthusiasm for Prince’s music is nearly completely obliterated by all of the hyper religious mumbo jumbo, especially this passage:

-

“I check people out now to see how faith-based they are and how real they are about it. That goes a long way, I gotta tell you. Because I can trust them. I can give him the key and don’t have to worry.”

-

First, if he really believes that then he’s a fool. Second, perhaps I should see how "non faith-based" an artist is before I invest so much time and money into their music. And third, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.....someone should really get Prince in touch with Neil deGrasse Tyson....STAT!!!!

-

I bet this interview was covertly recorded because it appears as if it was quoted verbatim. Even with taking notes I don’t think it would be possible to get this level of detail. That might be why it was yanked.....Prince knows it was recorded and that violated the terms of the interview.

Also, one of the reasons "The Hits/The B-Sides" is so masterful (for 3 discs; there could be so much more) is because Prince is one of the greatest and hardest working musical artists ever. And, he was cool enough — or not — to allow others to put the brilliant pieces together themselves, even as they didn't completely understand the sequence of his heart.

.

Oh please, go look up the facts: WBR wanted to do a greatest hits for years and Prince had been getting in the way over and over again. They finally paid him several millions to get the fuck out of the way so they could get it done.

.

Of course, the set sold disappointingly because Prince did no serious promo. It's baffling how such a fantastic set -- three CDs for the price of two and one of those CDs being a collection of B-Sides most of which were vinyl only, fantastic liner notes, at least one stunning previously unreleased track -- sold so little, whereas other artists have collections that are million sellers.

It's funny he deff saw the recent BBC THE VAULT DOCUMENTARY and was taking "shots" indirectly at Susan Rodgers... lol

He took a couple shots at Dez Dickerson too...in his book, Dickerson said Prince was amazed at Bob Seger's success with power ballad anthems...also the part about "his wife", and about Prince's coat being sold to the Hard Rock cafe'

What does it matter about a coat? Prince has 1000's of coats. It's about money. It's not about a coat. He was talking about people feeling like they can just take from him. Prince works as hard as anyone else around him. Time and time again...people take from him. The value of what they take is if no matter...its that they do it, despite what he feels is his generosity.

Ya Mama ever trip on someone staking some Tupperware w/o asking...and even the food from the BBQ that they snuck in the Tupperware they sheisted? It's not the value of the Tupperware or the food in it, its despitenya Mama's generosity of even having a BBQ that she don't charge for by the head, people take.

I smoke weed...and despite me being more than willing to give someone a head change, some will insist on snaking weed, when I'd be more than willing to kick em down some. I'll get more weed...there's ALWAYS more weed....its that they feel entitled to take it.

There will ALWAYS b more coats...the wardrobe dept AND Prince are well aware of that.

P sounds like an asshole....I get that....but he is obscenely generous with his time, talent, money, opportunities... But yet people take.

I get his frustration. But I seriously doubt he wakes up every morning, sits on the pot, and laments about niggas taking his coats while he sings adore to himself. This was an interview...a conversation... A moment in time. If someone took a picture of u taking a shit, it don't mean that all u do all day is sit and shit.

I love hearing details about the music, but when things get personal Prince gets gross. I get the same feeling reading this interview as I did after one of the Rainbow Children listening parties, where Prince "witnessed" to us afterwards for 4 hours. Excited at first, and then slightly nauseated by the end.

I feel like the less I know about Prince, the man, and the further I am away from him as a fan, the better. Otherwise, I won't be able to enjoy the music. His "asshole side" is just too hideous. "What am I supposed to tell your wife?!" Hah! That's just textbook "lil' bitch." Isn't wrath one of the 7 deadly sins? I can't even imagine working for someone like that.

He even makes his faith sound like a device used to control those around him.

IDK, I think I'm just going to go back to Phase 2 and forget this interview ever happened. lol

highfive

exactly. i wish i hadn't read this one, but i did. so i'll learn from it and not read another interview
with him again.

it's tainting his music, which i still enjoy massively. so yes, back to Phase 2 and let's try to forget
all about prince and his personal antics.

.

There's really nothing in this interview that's unexpected. The only surprising thing is that Prince said all this in front of a journalist and it got written up and published -- and that it showed that Prince is way bigger a douche than I suspected.
