I shouldn’t have read this interview. After the total disappointment of Phase Two, my enthusiasm for Prince’s music is nearly completely obliterated by all of the hyper religious mumbo jumbo, especially this passage:

-

“I check people out now to see how faith-based they are and how real they are about it. That goes a long way, I gotta tell you. Because I can trust them. I can give him the key and don’t have to worry.”

-

First, if he really believes that then he’s a fool. Second, perhaps I should see how "non faith-based" an artist is before I invest so much time and money into their music. And third, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.....someone should really get Prince in touch with Neil deGrasse Tyson....STAT!!!!

-

I bet this interview was covertly recorded because it appears as if it was quoted verbatim. Even with taking notes I don’t think it would be possible to get this level of detail. That might be why it was yanked.....Prince knows it was recorded and that violated the terms of the interview.

-

Is there a word for fear of religion? Because whatever that phobia is you have it and it's just as disgusting and nasty as any other phobia humans created in the name of religious beliefs....you're no different from a religious fanatic that can't understand science. You name drop Neil deGrasse Tyson and yet you lack much of the deftness and understanding Tyson would have. What makes Prince feel safe or happy or certain, in his life doesn't have to make any sense to you or me. Just like what you do for yourself doesn't have to make sense to your friends or family. Ahhh I think the word for what you have is theophobia but also like most people who abhor religion because of what it's done to humanity, you impose your disdain for it on anyone who practice it because that's what humans do. In short, in a post that is supposed to eviscerate Prince for his close mindedness and meant to embarass him for excluding people based on their faith or lack thereof, you actually perpetuate the same shameful and embarrassing views and speech found in religion. Failing ultimately, to understand the human condition of a man. What strangely advanced and yet outdated computer are you? Well you're a human and we all have our things don't we? We are not perfect for everyone right? That's why most of us who strive to be good with these bodies, don't judge others in them regardless if they do. If Prince's failure's as a human start and end with his religious views for you then so be it but understand that Prince's religion could be the one thing that keeps him waking up the next day. One thing that stuck out to me about Prince's music is regardless of the lines that separate us in society, we can all dance to the same jam on the same floor and get higher than we've ever been before together. BTW, philosophers and scientists and atheists once fed religious people to animals.

Also, one of the reasons "The Hits/The B-Sides" is so masterful (for 3 discs; there could be so much more) is because Prince is one of the greatest and hardest working musical artists ever. And, he was cool enough — or not — to allow others to put the brilliant pieces together themselves, even as they didn't completely understand the sequence of his heart.

.

Oh please, go look up the facts: WBR wanted to do a greatest hits for years and Prince had been getting in the way over and over again. They finally paid him several millions to get the fuck out of the way so they could get it done.

.

Of course, the set sold disappointingly because Prince did no serious promo. It's baffling how such a fantastic set -- three CDs for the price of two and one of those CDs being a collection of B-Sides most of which were vinyl only, fantastic liner notes, at least one stunning previously unreleased track -- sold so little, whereas other artists have collections that are million sellers.

Where are these facts posted? Links please!

Well, it's kinda hard to post links due to "darling" Prince making it next to impossible to have a decent encyclopedia-like site. But, that info is in Alex Hahn's Possessed book.

--/ That is just it. He does not have to shut the fuck up about his music or life. I do not see any one telling Susan Rogers or Susan Melvoin to shut the hell up. They are talking about him in the media along with a whole other host of people who cannot seem to move the fuck on. Keep in mind he is using the word theft, lies, talks frankly about the lack of skills of some musicians. Maybe all of this is true or just his opinion. Whatever the case he shattered the illusion that he is the happy negro sitting back taking it and not dishing it back. Get over it because I bet P did already😳

Read that book and Hahn doesn't go that far AT ALL. As I recall, Warner wanted a greatest hits album and Prince resisted allegedly because Prince felt greatest hits albums were for artists at the end of their career. In fact, Alan Leeds recalled that Prince was actually on board with an idea Leeds and Levi Seacer Jr came up with that entailed the re-release of each classic Prince album but with the outtakes and other songs reworked from the recording sessions with linear notes and all, which would have led up to this huge Revolution reunion when they got to Purple Rain but Warners nixed that idea instead wanting a comprehensive tracking of only his hit songs. The HITS album gave Warners the ability to change the usage clock on Prince's hit songs and most of his unreleased songs that were circulating on bootlegs. (You'd think they were aware an issue with his contract was brewing again). So when people say Warners forced Prince into the great comprehensive release, no they forced him to give them a longer license on his biggest songs and back him into a corner to do what they say. Maybe they had good intentions, Prince didn't think so.

But if it is true: releasing the outtakes would have given WB a licence on formerly bootlegged songs. Not releasing The Hits/The B-sides.

Don't even try it because if anything here was factual, they'd know Fink said exactly this in an interview that he's a Jazz/Improv player and doesn't like doing it, he's classically trained. When, specifically talking about the solo on When Doves Cry Fink talks about how Prince slowed the track down to record it and he had to play it live at full speed and how he would practice it incessantly to get it right. This just shows you how many people here are not musicians and don't know anything about the nuances. ANY player would be the first to tell you that most classically trained players aren't improv guys, it's very rare that you get both in one player. It's not a knock on anyone. Some musicians can't play by ear, they have to read, others can play by ear and read, others just play by ear. Each player in a band learned and plays differently. No one is the same and very few musicans can play EVERYTHING, EVERY WAY, so when players get together to play they communicate HOW they play and what style. That doesn't mean a classically trained player can't follow in an improv jam session, you just may not get the best playing from that particular player in an improv setting.

The HITS is a fresh release not a reissue and some of the tracks were remastered.

Renato is the worst musician prince has ever played with .. His butchering of p classics was tragic ... No keyboard player since fink has laid down anything memorable in contrast to finks outstanding contributions to not only composing but catchy stabs and very memorable solos .. Furthermore much of prince music grooves came from jams/improvising with various rev members and they were all far better at improvising than his post rev bands p discarded them for ... Where do you think 20 minute versions of mountains America purple rain and baby ima star come from?

Renato improvising is sleep inducingly boring and unmemorable

That's simply not true. The Rev's impro is simply them playing the same thing for 20 minutes while Prince improvises on top.

It's not only about phrasing but also context. Prince is talking about why he brought in Leeds as a soloist.

Exactly! prince had to ALWAYS work so hard playing live with The Revolution. He didnt feel challenged by their musicianship anymore. I'm sure they became such a bore to him.His band came alive when he replaced Bobby with bad ass Sheila E. Levi & Miko's jazzy bass & rhythm guitar solos added a more funky element.Only one I really miss is Lisa. I'm partial to classically trained pianist. Her sound I miss dearly(including her voice).

Speculation: Why would Ebony remove the interview one minute after it was posted? Because Prince was pissed as hell with an erratic retranscription of his words and called them to say that's not what he said and they should remove this piece of crap immediately or he's never giving them an interview again.
