he took some shots at Appollonia too...because she is always saying how the Purple Rain era love songs were about her

I think that was a shot at Susannah Melvoin.

I think it was a shot at people who overanalyze everything. He just doesn't want to be pinned down on anything. "This song is about this particular person in this particular situation in this particular year." That would take all the magic away.

I've been enjoying some of prince recent music after years of really bad music, but this interview leaves me feeling like p is a real douchebag. All his religious Bs and he wines about someone selling his coat for a few bucks. It's mine mine mine says millionare donald prince over and over. Pride and gluttony are deadly sins, which means if you helieve the religious garbage coming out of your own mouth, u should believe god will strike you dead for being an egotistical petty glutton who always wants more than everyone else. No prince you do not have faith, your attitude proves it. Maybe like trump who believes republicans are stupid enough to believe all his lies, p thinks cristians are dumb enough to buy his music if he pretends to be religious. There is absolutely nothing cristian about a song like 2Y2D, which is creepy with a pediphilia slant aa well as heavy coersion via the dare theme. Prince has always played with rape themes, at this age lyrics like 2y2d and lolita are super creepy, especially when the premise is that the young girl says NO and then is mocked and taunted as tho she is just being a chicken because she is young, and not actually saying no because prince is old and gross and creepy and she doesnt WANT to fuck prince. Prince is delusional to think no one is his friend because he is SOOOO great. Just look at the way p talks about his old friends he now seems to be bitter about. Damn if some friend helped me make millions they can have the damn coat.

It's only one of his more interesting interviews because he aggressively trying to protect his mystique with less cryptic talk this time around, and more straight-forward answers. My opinion, but I don't believe for a minute that he hasn't heard the "Condensate" album. I think he listens to everything, especially work from his close friends. As far as his plans on the whole "remastering"/Greatest Hits stuff, i'll keep waiting lol....

I think he claims not to have heard the album to avoid having to have an opinion on the it.

He comes across as a very sad, very bitter, very delusional old man in this interview. Especially the remark about Doug E. Fresh's quote regarding Rakim. So Prince measures the quality of his artistic output based on how few friends he has? He should keep that to himself, because that's really pathetic.

Guys... He just said people read too much into everything and go and read that answer in the most limited and literal way. The answer to the question is "Hopefully, yeah." This means "yes", he hopes so.

He mentions a greatest hits, this would obviously be just starters if he had his way.

EBONY: Will you be remastering the catalog?

Prince: Hopefully, yeah. A new Greatest Hits. Because I never had anything to do with [The Hits/The B-Sides]. But put great liner notes in it to explain what record came from what and why. Explain the backstory of it. Somebody said “Purple Rain” was inspired by Bob Seger! I said, call him in. “Sit down, man. Y’all got to have everything, huh? Bob Seger?! You gon’ put that in the ether? OK.” [laughter]

But we're talking PRINCE TIME here... Hopefully means... In the near future... In the near future means... Most likely never. lol

The timing is anyone's guess but what's clear is that he does value his past work -- a nice change from the rumours of him letting it all degrade or even setting fire to the thing one day.

I love hearing details about the music, but when things get personal Prince gets gross. I get the same feeling reading this interview as I did after one of the Rainbow Children listening parties, where Prince "witnessed" to us afterwards for 4 hours. Excited at first, and then slightly nauseated by the end.

I feel like the less I know about Prince, the man, and the further I am away from him as a fan, the better. Otherwise, I won't be able to enjoy the music. His "asshole side" is just too hideous. "What am I supposed to tell your wife?!" Hah! That's just textbook "lil' bitch." Isn't wrath one of the 7 deadly sins? I can't even imagine working for someone like that.

He even makes his faith sound like a device used to control those around him.

IDK, I think I'm just going to go back to Phase 2 and forget this interview ever happened. lol

highfive

exactly. i wish i hadn't read this one, but i did. so i'll learn from it and not read another interview
with him again.

it's tainting his music, which i still enjoy massively. so yes, back to Phase 2 and let's try to forget
all about prince and his personal antics.

The interviewer: I give him credit. He tried. He almost got something. He mined a few nuggets.

The interviewee: clearly loony toons. He's so far up his own ass he can't even put together a coherent thought, let alone a sentence.

I think he despises what he views as some who act like he's their own musical valet daring not to serve the dishes they feel they are entitled to, based on some dubious notion that he's an idiot just out there to meet their personal expectations.

Having a ton of friends is overrated anyway. You just need a few solid people that you can trust, and the rest can be acquaintances. If you have too many friends you can never get things that require time and cultivation done.

First of all, biggrin , at this gem about HNR:P1

"When this does well, nobody gloats, we go about our business."

But we’ll do another one. And this is a way for Josh to step up. ’Cause he’s not gonna stay around here forever. So I gotta work with him while I can. And you remember: Teddy Riley was under somebody before; Pharrell was under somebody before. Jimmy and Terry were under me.

This bass is wicked, you understand? That’s why none of ’em will come to the gig anymore. They’ll just stand in the back, because they know what they said. Making up all these names about people and giving credit where credit ain’t due.Kendrick [Lamar], this is his year now...

WTF? You couldn't pay me to write that shit down. If I was there for the interview, I would have told Prince to take his meds and call me back when he is coherent. Like, how can they stand in the back, if they won't come to the gigs? And.. what does Kendrick... Lamar... have to do with anything? It's Larry Graham's Nephew's year, but Mr I'mSoIntoContemporaryCulture clearly doesn't know it.

There are only a handful of engineers that were trusted enough to stick around for more than one project so it was likely someone that was in and out fairly quickly.

Love the music, but, am not fond of Prince at all. He is, in my humble opinion, batshit crazy. I have been a huge fan since 1979 and have followed his carrer and think he is losing it.

When people would ask me the question, "Who would you love to sit down and have a chat with?" I would always answer, "Prince." - Now - not a chance. The less I know about him the better.

What he said about Susan Rogers was pretty brash... Has their relationship been strained for a while, I thought she left at a mutual repsect?

"There was one engineer who said that their sole purpose in life was to get the stuff out of the vault, and get it copied so it wasn’t lost to the world. I’m trying to figure out if that’s illegal. Should I fear for my safety that you might need some medical attention? You want to come up in my vault and you feel like that belongs to you and that’s your purpose? You better find something to do. That’s scary."

.

I think that if anyone who I employed decided they know better than MYSELF what to do with the music I solely created and wanted to appropriate themselves with it for the "sake of History" I would be SERIOUSLY pissed and tell them to f"ck off and mind their own biz.. so I think Prince was quite a gentleman about the whole thing smile

Regardless of her talent that woman seems to be a bit of a koo koo imho...
