Two options...

A) If you catch the guiter, throw it back twice as hard.

B) The next person to get the guitar needs to just pass it back over their heads, and the person who gets it next does the same, then the next, and the next. Send that sucker to the rafters, then all the way around the arena. Keep the "retrievers" running and allow a bunch of people to mess with the guitar instead of just one.

I wondered this as well. Why was he in the front row? I did that in my teens and early 20's. i certainly wouldn't do it now.. and I believe I am younger than he. Why was he up there. you can get hurt just by trying to get in the front row. And how did he get those tickets?

See that is why it is wrong to charge HIGH prices for front row seats. Instead of getting real fans you get these wussie flaky rich spectators who only go to the concert so they can impress colleagues that they were hip enough to go to Prince concert and rich enough to get front row seats.

He needs to get a new club online and sell those tickets to members of his online club. that way he will get some ass shaking, appreciative (show a lot of love) real Purple Fans!!

This incident is just further proof that it's no longer like the the old NPG Music Club days when Prince made sure that it was his true die-hard fans that were in the VIP seats! Back then, if Prince gave us his guitar to hold during the show, we knew it was just temporary. However, nowadays there are casual fans that are only up front because they are fortunate enough to be able to afford the high prices, and Prince does not realize that these people do not know him like we do! If he wants to keep giving his guitar to the audience, he needs to make sure that his true fans are the ones up front again! That's all I'm saying!

My point exactly. Seems to me that if this man laid out $750 for his ticket, he would have been a die-hard. If you don't know the rulz, stay your ass in the cheap seats!

Really, when Prince gives his guitar to fans how hard would it be for him to say "This is to hold for a little while, not to keep".

Common sense should tell him that casual fans will wrongly assume the guitar is theirs to keep.

I've gotten the guitars a couple of times... (I am... vertically challenged [petite], so have to always be at the front for General Adminssion shows) -- where he'll hand them to you -- and everybody close enough to get a guitar has (I guess until now, lol ) been a fan long enough/is smart enough to know he's just sharing it with you, and you have to give it back, either to him or a tech.

Some of those guitars he's had for decades.. why in the world would he just give 'em away? rolleyes lol

~ Also, P probably figures that anybody close enough to catch a guitar, who paid $$$, is that level of fan and would know the routine shrug

Sorry to be so late with this, I've been gone a while.

To all those who think "real" Prince fans would know the guitar is never to keep, you might want to read this:

http://www.tmz.com/2009/0...staffer/3/

Hey everybody, Daniel from TMZ here. So last night Prince gave me his guitar ... and then some guy took it back.

I was lucky enough to sit front row during a taping of "The Tonight Show." I was there for one reason, and one reason only -- to see Prince. After suffering through Paul Giamatti and Emma Roberts, Prince came on and performed "Dreamer."

As the song was winding down, Prince took off his guitar and walked out into the crowd -- I had no idea what he was doing. He walked right up to me and just simply handed me his guitar and walked away. I stood there stunned for about 20 seconds while my friend Trent went nuts. We both kinda strummed the guitar before I turned around and held it up to the crowd triumphantly.

After another 30 seconds or so, someone came around and retrieved the guitar. Now, I was all excited about this whole thing -- calling and texting everyone I can think of. But when I came to work today, everyone said the same thing -- PRINCE OWES YOU A GUITAR. I believe Harvey's quote was, "You're a schmuck for giving it back."

And before you accuse this Daniel guy of not being a true fan:

http://www.tmz.com/2006/0...t-concert/

My name is Daniel. And I am a Prince fan.

I don't consider this an addiction as much as it is my duty. It requires a certain level of focus and commitment. He says jump, we say how high.

Last night was the perfect example.

I got an email on Tuesday at 11:50 AM. The email said that Prince would be playing a show that night-- where? They didn't know yet -- and that tickets would be going on sale at noon. Prince was closing the BET Awards that night and apparently this was the after show. I had 10 minutes to get tickets. (Apparently the email went out earlier than this; I just got it late).

Now in the Prince fan world, it isn't every fan for themselves -- we're all in this together. So I immediately sent out the Bat (er, Prince) Signal to my friend Monica. My email: "Call me now. Prince related."

It took her one minute to call me back. Literally.

We both logged onto to Prince's official Web site: NPGmusicclub.com. We waited patiently (not really) for the clock to strike noon. When it did, we clicked and typed as fast as we could. And it was a good thing - there was a one ticket limit.

His guitar playing lately is not to be believed and tonight is no exception. He does a hard rock version of "Anotherloverholenyohead" that absolutely sets the stage on fire. The last few songs were worth the price of admission alone.

Prince finally (not like I am complaining) leaves the stage at around 3:15. Again, he walks out with only one security guard and as Monica and I make our way out, we realize we're pretty much walking side-by-side with Prince. Monica, who met Prince years ago, does the "Hey remember me?" thing and he totally does. They share a hug. For the record, Monica has now hugged Chaka and Prince. She's on cloud nine.

We hit the valet and head home. I don't get to bed til 4:30 and my alarm went off at 6:30. I thought about calling in "Prince" today to work, but figured no one would understand.

Daniel is 29-years-old and has been a Prince fan all his life. He is still mad at his mom for going to a Purple Rain concert without him. That was 22 years ago.

I think handing anything out to someone in the audience is a risky move. This guy doesn't get someone in that audience would've knocked him out if he tried to carry that guitar out. He would need security to escort him to his car.

They mentioned where he lived, and as far as I know, that's an area full of people who make 6 figure salaries and a few celebs. The 750 was prob. a drop in the bucket. Not everyone who is sitting near the stage is a huge fan, some of them are married to someone who is. Elizabeth Hasslebeck's husband might know a few songs, but it was a free night out for the View people. Same with the Ross Social - people with deep pockets who might know some of the hits, but not hardcore fans, just bought all the tickets to the shows including that one. I'm sure there were people who paid & didn't go.

Eddie Van Halen trashed one of his favorite instruments back in 2004 and threw the pieces out to the fans. It was a guitar he's used for years. I don't care if he has thousands of guitars, there's certain ones you usually value as prized possessions. But he didn't care about himself all that much.

Ask a known guitarist via Email or Twitter what they think about Prince doing this, and why they would or wouldn't hand off a guitar. I think they're the ones we should be asking instead of debating or defending Prince doing this. I'm not sure how to get the question short enough for Twitter right now, but just see if you get responses and what they say about it.

My apologies for the duplication, thanks for letting me know. I read about half of the enormous thread and didn't see any mention of it. Based on the more recent comments posted, it appears many others missed it as well.
