Prince is far from the first or the only artist to throw a guitar in the audience. Most every other artist knows the routine and follows it accordingly:

You switch guitars on the song you are going to give the guitar away on. A cheap Squier or Ibanez or even a lesser known brand like SX or something can be had for very little $.

You play a few chords on it and maybe a solo, then you unplug it and toss it. You don't toss a $10k Aurswald or something like that into the audience. I was at this show and saw it happen. What a night it was... The concert was amazing, I don't get the throwing the guitar in the audience then asking for it back. I love you prince, but I wouldn't have given it back if I caught it!

Patti Labelle kicks her shoes off into the crowd almost always and asks for them back!!! Thats the one time I can think of.

I've PERSONALLY been to SIX Patti LaBelle concerts in my lifetime...and at NONE of them did she kick her shows off INTO the audience AND send someone to get them back.

I, however, have seen TWO people...catch them and give them back...WILLFULLY on their own...AND got them autographed and GIVEN back to them!

If the guy was literally beat down by people at the concert, not cool...but how anyone, at any show, could think that they would then be the owner of the guitar is beyond me...it would just be common sense to me that the performer would still own the guitar...it would be shocking to me to find out the man was actually beat up, knocked over and trampled maybe, but even then, not in an evil way...i remember when P jammed literally for like a minute with Maceo in Vegas back in 2005 if i'm remembering right...he seemed pissed with the sound....he lifted the guitar above his head and dropped it into the crowd and it hit a girl in the head...all the people around her were checking to see if she was ok...i watched the news video...this guy's a moro n...

That's a really good point.

It's interesting to see the different perspectives here - ie. what different people's definitions of "common sense" etc... are. What is "blindingly obvious" seems poles apart, depending on your experience of the world.

I like the idea of living in a society where fun things can happen, such as an artist throwing a prized possession into the crowd (after making eye contact so he doesn't clock someone in the head) and trust that it will come back to him - rather than the society that says, "you threw it, I keep it".

It's not that one is right and the other is wrong - it's just that my preference is to enjoy the freedom that comes with the mindset of the former.

As for why he does it? It looks so damn cool!!

lol @ the post, but definitely agree about this distracting from the most important news of all, which was how awesome that concert obviously was. Pity that's what gets left out of most of the news reports.

This should be no different than getting a game ball. Hendrix used to switch guitars to the cheap ones he planned on destroying on stage and threw that out to the fans. The Who just stole their equipment.

There's also the question if it was house security or Prince's crew that demanded it back.

But I expect people in 800 dollar seats not to beat down other concertgoers, and in terms of memorabilia, would've had to have proof at the show, if P didn't have any sort of ID on his guitars. The guy's from San Rafael, and that's an expensive area to live in. Santana and 'Tallica live around there.

Simple solution - instead of throwing it out to the fans, have some of the kids from the places the money is going to up on stage and play some music. I'd love to see some 10 year old guitar prodigy go up and shred with Prince for a minute. For $750 he should be doing meet and greets and signing stuff for 15 minutes.

Hey everybody, Daniel from TMZ here. So last night Prince gave me his guitar ... and then some guy took it back.

I actually think it's seriously cool that he would throw his beloved Hohner into the crowd in complete faith and trust that it will come back to him in one piece.

Standard practice seems to be that one of Prince's crew always retrieves the guitar.

A couple of people here and in the concert thread have suggested that he didn't seem to want to throw it to the audience that night, but that his crewman wasn't ready to catch it, so in the end he made eye contact with this dude and threw it to him instead.

That's not really a solution so much as a completely seperate idea. I'm pretty sure these weren't charity gigs, so I'm not sure which children would be getting up on stage.

Why? It wasn't advertised as part of the ticket price. He set those prices, people paid for them, end of story. If a time comes that no one buys them at that price, then maybe he needs to think about either reducing the price or offering more incentive. But signing stuff was never part of the deal, nor was his guitar.

Prince always throws his guitar to a fan or stage hand any real fan knows this. Obviously this man wasn’t a fan. But this time Prince couldn’t find his stage hand and decided to throw it to a fan instead.But he always have someone retrieve it almost immediately..Too bad this man got beaten in the process.I wouldn't mind having that 20TEN guitar pick though....

I guess U can say its keeping him in the news & selling concert tickets without him really trying....Hope this man don't try to sue Prince......Also hope it don't stop him from continuing to throw it. I 've always liked when he did this....
