Acting Like A Man: giving up your seat for a women on the bus, helping a women with a heavy item at the grocery store, giving up your jacket at a Bronco game for a women who didn't dress appropriately, not using vulgar language around females, going to work and providing for your family

these are all examples of acting like a man.

Not acting like a Man: you can just reverse everything above, NOT giving up your seat, NOT helping a women, NOT etc......

hmmm

Know what?

It's tough for me to find a beef with these EXCEPT... real men don't do Broncos games. disbelief

You agree with not using vulgar language around females? Like our poor little ears shouldn't hear such words but other men can take it? lol

The other things have nothing to do with 'acting like a man', it's simply just acting like a kind person.

I think some of us are confusing our disapproval of the phrase "act like a lady" and the thought process behind it with not knowing what society generally means by the phrase.

Really? Are we all gonna act like this is the first time we ever heard that phrase?

Of course I've heard it. I've never known what it really meant though and never cared to find out until now.

In that case I apologize. Because that's part of being a man. biggrin

No but really though. Sorry.

I wouldn't give up my jacket for some dude who didn't dress right for the game. I'd laugh at him and so "you dummy, told you to bring a jacket". But for a lady, "here, you wear this, it's warm".

What I am seeing here is that 'ladies' are supposed to act a certain way for men. You know, dress a certain way, not drink, not swear, not be promiscuous, but when listing the way to act like a man, none of the same things are listed.

So it's cool for men to do all these things but not women.

It's laughable.

As I said earlier, some of the things listed are just things that make a person sweet or kind and has nothing to do with what sex is doing it.

Erin, I try not to use foul language around anyone. I get pissed enough to go there from time to time, but it's not my standard. I just think it's juvenile when one defaults at that sort of thing.

That aside, I do agree there's a certain chauvinism attached to certain conduct around women just because they're women. I think that's tacitly sexist.

I agree. It's sort of what I was getting at a few posts back. I don't agree with the mentality, myself. I hate double standards.

Edit: And the being a man comment in my quoted post was me just mocking the idea.

Like I've already said a couple of times, that's behaviour that is simply kind and considerate and it's silly to target it towards one sex only.

The implication is that women really are the weaker sex in every sense of the word.

But at least I know now what a lady is and isn't to (I'm guessing) a lot of dudes (although, I don't know any that think this way).

And I can only let you own that. shrug It's not my interest to disparage you... except for that Broncos thing. sad

I think the things you've mentioned are awesome from a sort of general disposition of charitability. THAT makes a good man (and a good woman), IMHO. And if individual women are gratified by these things, I say go 'head with ya bad self. I am, however, personally really cautious in prescribing niceties payable in a sweeping sense to one sex and not the other. That sort of thing, despite good intentions, so often comes attached to a certain notion of not only intrinsic difference, but superiority, that comes out in ways that undercut good will.

Personal experience? Let's see, i've been married for 20 years this past October, I know what a women likes. She likes to feel appreciated, protected. She wants somebody who would lay their life on the line for her.

Difficult?? Yes, it should almost be impossible to have sex with a women who is NOT your wife. I know thats not going to happen and never has happened but as a society we do need standards.

They have lowered standards. Explanation: They (feminist, liberals, athiests etc...) lowered the standards. The standard used to be that in order to have a sexual relationship with a women you would have to marry her. That is NO longer the standard. The standard used to be that around a women you watch you language, you treat her with respect, you treat her as you would want somebody to treat your mother. That is NO longer the standard.

I hope I'm not coming off as condescending but this stuff is elementary. Like my other posts states, it's really irritating when somebody says "whatever that means" when they damn right what it means.

the language your purposely using, your trying to come off as women are just like men sexually. I won't repeat it, obviously it's right there. You using that language is another example of lowered standards. 50 years ago no self respecting women would be caught dead talking like that, but today it's totally acceptable.

You know what your wife wants...and that's where your experience ends.

Thank goodness standards have been lowered then! Other than treating others with respect (which is what everyone should be doing anyway), it was a delusional standard to begin with.

You found someone that is super old school like you and that's awesome. I wouldn't concern yourself too much about how others are living their lives, especially if you're in something that is perfect for you.

My mother swore like a sailor, openly used drugs, was a terrible alcoholic (now recovering) and slept with men out of wedlock during my childhood; you want to say something about how she's not a lady? That's a rhetorical question - trust me, you don't. Because she also taught me everything I know about how to live, survive and be a good person (which I know I am). What you're saying is a whole heaping helping of your own personal opinion and point of view, based on your own personal experiences. It's not fact. Not now and not fifty years ago. It's what you like. What you want. And nothing more.
