Complaints About New Releases

I see a lot of complaints about every new release either costing too much or it not being necessary. I just want to say that in the mid 1990's I spent many hundred of dollars on bootlegs. I still have them and love them. Can I get them for free now on a quick download? Of course, but that doesn't take away my love for the physical things I bought and still have and can hold in my hands today. If you don't prize holding things in your hands that you paid for and others can't have, then don't purchase those things. I for one, and like many else on here, can afford to splurg to have and to hold all Prince items that come up for sale, either retail or boot. I buy everything because I can. I'm sorry for those who are not in that position, but please stop bitchin about how you can't afford to purchase them.

Mostly complaints about the LACK of new releases these days.
Almost a year between SOTT deluxe and Welcome 2 America.
And still nothing scheduled before at least April of 2022.
And according to some insiders, not coming before September/October,

Yesterday I saw a vinyl reissue of Sign O' the Times in a shop window for €85. Not the special edition, just the double lp. Everywhere prices of vinyl are rising.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I want more releases, I don't care about the price, I just refuse to be gouged for vinyl that is useless to me. It would have had negligible financial impact for me to buy the SDE for Welcome 2 America but then I'd have the vinyl albums and some other crap that I'm not interested in.

As it happened, I missed out on the Blu-Ray and the estate misses out on some extra money that they could have had with a different release strategy.

But bring on more I say, the next release of new music can't come soon enough. I'm not getting any younger.

RIP sad

Right there with you. I bought the single disc edition of W2A, even though I'm really just streaming the album. I'd have happily paid up for the blu-ray, but not for the vinyl and a bunch of paper trinkets.

SOTT SDE I had no problem paying for, even though I basically just stream the audio, because that set had value, and I can use every part of it.

What do you know from your ''insiders'' ?

Not one of us here knows shit in my opinion to be honest.

It just could be that in januari there might be an announcement,

who the hell relaly knows for sure?

And based on slow productions and lack of basic materials...

The global industry found it's way through the pandemic problems by now.

Things will move on as they do at this very moment.

Example; look at how well all deliveries for the holiday season were done.

Here in Europe, The UK and in the US from what i've heard, everything was available.

I see the crates in my favorite record shops being filled again.

The shop owners I talked to are satisfied.

Anoterh example, I ordered something in Hong Kong 5 days ago,

and it arrived here in Belgium this very morning.

Most shippings, orders and productions are almost back on track.

I can imagine that any an anouncement will be made on these conditions.

That's what i've heard from a friend working in a big distrubution company here in the port of Antwerp.

So again, we just know shit. Unless you know more...

I think the estate is largley doing a good job. I'd give them an A- or a B+. I'm sure it's complicated and difficult.

There's no freaking way under the sun to satisfy every Prince fan, especially us loonies, and also still make these releases profitable.

I don't know how much of a mainstream market there is for a Prince Aftershow collection or something like a full on Crystal Ball 2 crammed with vault tracks. The latter might unearth some unexpected freak surprise hit if they time it and market it right, but I doubt it. Even a live CD/DVD compilation I'm not entirely sure about from a sheer sales standpoint but I could be wrong.

Thing is, after D&P: SDE, there's just not much commercially leaning stuff left to mine and reissue - since I can't imagine the public in general is clamoring for Batman Remastered and that's the next highest seller. Sooner, rather than later though, the estate is going to HAVE to get around to putting out collections catered to the more hardcore fan base. I expect they will and that it will be have a pretty high price point. It'll have to be. But most of us will snatch it up anyway.

Maybe they'll figure out that there is, in fact, a market for all those rarities that we all know exist (again, they're going to have to) but I have my doubts that it will set the world on fire commercially.

Are you not saying that for months?
Were you not among the strange people who said there was to be an announcement before the 1st of October, for a December 2021 release? 😂
Won't you ever learn?

In January, there's the Do Me single, in February, the Sony reissues + SOTT, so there won't be an announcement in January.

Dr Funkenberry said the estate was still hesitating between D&P and Parade.
This kind of boxset takes 10/11 months to produce apparently.
This has already been discussed here.

Keaton's Batman is coming back in a couple of movies in 2022/2023.
So as I already said last year, a Batman SDE would make sense then.

Maybe, but I don't see a Batman Prince reissue making much noise.

Perhaps MAYBE if they worked with the film makers and timed some weird re-release of Batdance (or better, use that song in the movie somewhere) but...eh. Keaton's role is a cameo in The Flash movie too if I'm reading the news right, so it's just minor fan service I think.

The success of that album had everything to do with the film and next to nothing to do with the quality of the music. It was a collection of rehashed songs that our man had lying around with some lyrics switched around that Prince cobbled together and WB slapped a Batman logo on since, in 1989, that was a license to print money and you could market a cat turd by simply changing one letter and calling it a Bat Turd. I doubt there's a treasure trove of outtakes here, nor a ton of fan interest.

Prince got to cash a nice check and put out an OK-ish album but, by and large, no one considers it anywhere close to a classic - despite its sales - and even fans of the movie sort of slot the album as more of a novelty than anything else. Aside from "Partyman", which aint that great, and "Trust" (also not great), Prince's music was totally BURIED in the actual film and, over time, has played second fiddle to Danny Elfman's legendary score.

If Prince had put out that same record and that same single minus that logo, neither go to #1 and fly off the shelves absent the strength of those bat wings folded up out of hundred dollar bills.

Sulls, youre clearly a good dad, many don't prioritize their kids needs above their own. You are the winner as the music will still be there when they grow up, they won't be little long. prince can take a back seat, he wont mind. cool

Well vinyl is more expensive. Plus it also clutters up the home. And for sound quality 320kbps MP3 beats vinyl.

I guess this is another reason bootlegs are good, as someone who had no interest in them before P passed. They're cheap, only requiring a small flash drive to back them up. And if you want them on vinyl you can't, so you cry instead.

I'm not an audiophile like a lot of vinyl collecters but I AM an artist and the coolest thing about albums is all that 12 x 12 artwork and marketing materials. All that cool stuff from the 70's (Pink Floyd, KISS, Parliament, YES, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Elton John) made me want to be an artist. You'd get posters you could hang up, cool illustrations and stickers and all sorts of cool shit that added to the whole experience.

I used to lay down as a 9 year old and listen to the records with headphones as I followed along with the big lyric booklets, drawings and shit. Prince's 1999 album stands out in this regard and I even remember that ATWIAD balloon decal that I put on my first car.

Yes,I did reply to two posts and I knew they would not come off well. I apologize and did not mean to offend anyone. I just get bored reading about how people don't like the costs of new releases. I mowed lawns as a kid just to buy Prince records.

I wish I hadn't overpaid for so many CDs in the past few years (to replace my albums). If I had held out, I could have had them for $9.99 each. I paid $75 each for a few. sad

My only problem is that they keep releasing what we already have.
How many re issues of the same album does a person really need?
I will gladly pay for new material like welcome to America or even remastered albums with bonus material
