It's so nice to hear Prince's voice with new music. I think this album is great.

Really loving 1010 (Rin Tin Tin)

It shows off his genius through the way it's built off that VERY simple piano riff, its slow 4/4 beat and the song's overall (deceptive) simplicity . He keeps changing up the timing, where the beats land and the sound(s) that come in with every measure to where it eventually builds into something captivatingly complex taht makes me want to listen to it again, which I've hard him do a LOT over the decades and is one of the things that makes him a master musician to my ears.

Surprises. Surprises in FUNK songs are hard to do since their basic structure is...well...so BASIC.

If I had to sum up the MAIN thing I like about Prince, it's how well he always used layers. Also, how tricked my ears into either changing, adding or even completely removing sounds that the song structure made me expect to hear. But, nope. By third measure, there's a new sound on one beat that replaces the one you heard 4 times already and this thing subverts expecatations that regular funk timing conditions and song structure leads you to anticipate. This song is a great example of how good he was at this shit and also uses space really well. He didn't make it noisy if u know what I mean.

Often when he does songs like this one, they're too short but here he allows the track to really breathe and growt.

There's Others Here With Us is a good example of what I'm trying to describe. Or People Without. Like those, we have such a basic, simple song built on a grade school riff which anyone can learn but somehow he makes it complex and captivating without adding anything real flashy to it. I Wonder U is an example of when he would cut this sort of song too short. In This Bed I Scream is another because that outro deserved more time but the fade out robbed us of it.

...

Sorry...rambling. And man, fuck me, but 5 years later I still have trouble writing about him in the past tense. Not fun.

Which version of 1000 light years do people most prefer? After loving how it sounds on Black Muse, its taking a bit of time to get used to the slower tempo of this version but its definitely growing on me.

Good question, deserves a thread of its own. I choose the one on HNR2. The one on W2A goes on a little too long for my liking.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Ohh, this pefectly describes for me why I love this track and the balance between anticipation and the element of surprise that is in so much of his music. When trying to explain to people why I love Prince so much, this is exactly what separates him from so many other artists I like. I always find it hard to explain it to others, but youโ€™re doing a great job! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ‘

Yeah, the horn breakdown on Black Muse just before 1000 light years starts is so good, it just sets up that version so well.

SchlomoThaHomo said: You would think they would have the masters for this. I wonder if Number 23 can confirm if his version has the noise on Stand Up B Strong

What's strange is that the noises aren't uncommon with old low-quality CDRs. If the noises are present on the official release, it was without question sourced from one of the old CDRs they found. Fingers crossed I'm wrong. On a positive note, this record is kicking my ass!

I hate to say it, but that is EXACTLY what I hear...the weird clicking and hisswarbling of a CD-R with digital rot! Although when I first listened on the vinyl edition I assumed it was vinyl production issues, it is obviously not, and I will soon have to do the CD headphone xperience to fully check it out!

Taking into account the stories being told about its production and such (some of which is a bit contradictory), I have to wonder if in fact there was no final mix outside of CD quality, on CD-Rs and that perhaps they could not locate a suitable quality master tape for Stand Up??? Obviously it's puzzling either way...but it would be criminal to leave this wonderful cover off, as the whole album definitely feels like a potentially final sequence of a proper album, something I hope there are more of waiting for our listening pleasure... BUT it also is criminal to not wait until the proper sources could be used, and even further more criminal that they are peddling a hi-res version with such obvious flaws...

That being said, I'm happy to have this wonderful set, even if he ultimately chose to ditch it and use parts on other things... it's gorgeous!

1010 (Rin Tin Tin) is a pretty close second.

You know what's sorta joyous on the BluRay? The audience shots (like during "1999"). Seeing people of all colors, races, genders, and sexualities singing in unison. Just having fun.

If there was ever peace in the world, it was at a Prince concert.

I love both. HITNRUN sounds better to me. It's a better tempo, and it sounds more alive. That said, it's shorter and tacked on the end of another song.

I kept coming back to that sentiment while watching the show Friday. You can't manufacture JOY... and it is everywhere you look in that audience. It made me emotional thinking back to my own experiences in the audience at his shows.

He was one of a kind.

I'm bought the album on iTunes but I was on a NYC subway this morning and I heard the clicking even with the regular Apple headphones. It is buried deep in the mix and sounds like rustling plastic wrap. I really hope the multi tracks were used for this and it was an issue that originated with Prince.

Received the French Deluxe version of Welcome 2 America.

Due to the vinyl it will not fit on my shelves.

Later I will dig into the CD.

The BluRay, even though i's storage potential, does NOT contain a PCM track as far as I can see on the packaging.

Who decided on the layout of the 'book'?

This is even worse than the SOTT 'book' debacle.

Try to open the book and access the vinyl and/or CD/BluRay.

In such case one needs quite bit of room to even grab the disc.

Compare that to a CD jewel case.

PS: also think of that this is a Deluxe edition. A Super Deluxe would be ...

How to keep that sheet around the French Deluxe 'book' intact?

Received the deluxe, I was expecting more in terms of when exactly each song was recorded, and I dont seem to have found that information. Mind you I have just quickly glanced at the book, haven't read the whole thing but I doubt they'd include that type of information there and not next to each song...

Beautiful package , design and presentation however. Kudos to Mathieu Bitton and Trevor Guy.

I really enjoyed Deliverance too even though those songs were not fully fleshed out. I'm glad I got them before they were taken down.
