You lot are already imagining some grandiose new mastering job.

.

And that new mastering still won't fix the butcher job Prince did to some of those tracks.

As with EVERY OTHER SINGLE ALBUM REISSUE since Prince died, the vinyl editions of these later period albums have sounded COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to their original CD counterparts.... i.e., they have not been brickwalled.... for the first time, they have actually sounded good.

This is not hard to comprehend is it? I'm not sure what other words to use. I kind of used all the ones needed to explain the point.

As for the quality of the Crystal Ball music? The notion that the tracks are butchered and mis-sequenced is just an opinion (and a rather tired one, at that) and has nothing to do with the potential SOUND quality of any release.

This 100%!! The vinyl reissues have sounded amazing. I can't wait for Crystal Ball.

@ Bart: For one who's usually such a Nazi about stating facts on this site, and for differentiating between facts and opinions, it's surprising to see you post something so totally off.

'None of those were as bad as CB' .... what does that even mean? The other albums were brickwalled but Crystal Ball was more brickwalled? Even if that is the case, which I doubt, that has nothing to do with how the new reissue will sound, when it is mastered specifically for vinyl.

Also, see how you're immediately dealing in opinions there? 'None of those were as bad' provides nothing concrete to base the statement on, only imparts your opinion on the previous releases.

And then we get to your take on Movie Star.... so the CREATOR of the track thought it should have the intro to Jam Of The Year at the start of it (a creator who was well-known for holding tracks back for years before releasing them, thus it could be argued that, to Prince, Movie Star 'belonged' on Crystal Ball '98, which is when it was released, and therefore was chronologically part of his canon, succeeding 1996's Jam Of The Year... so why shouldn't Jam feature on Movie Star?)

So, again, the CREATOR of the track thought it should be on there, but you don't, and that's not an opinion? Haha, hilarious.

You just don't like the fact that Movie Star features the intro to Jam Of The Year. Fair enough, but oh, guess what? 'Don't like' is pretty much the definition of an opinion.

Lastly, what does CB being available through NPGMC or on CD have to do with it? Those releases would not have received mastering specific for vinyl.

Vinyl as a format is quieter than every other - it has to be, PHYSICALLY, or else the needle will just jump off the record mid-distortion. So there's no reason to brickwall the release when they master it for vinyl. Vinyl mastering has nothing to do with the digital mastering for CD or NPGMC.

Bart, honestly, to me, on this site, you're 50% a useful source of information, and 50% a curmudgeonly, stick-in-the-mud pain in the ass.... but whichever guise you show up in, you're usually smarter than this.

It is not an opinion that for instance "Jam Of The Year" should not be featured in the intro to "Movie Star".

eye am sure eye will be unmastering

.

That "eye" thing was stupid when Prince used it, and you ain't Prince.

.

Also, you cannot "unmaster" something, that's like claiming you can split up soup into its original parts.

.

wish they would give us the original masters instead ..

.

Either something is mastered or it ain't. Sure, there is something like a flat master, but there's no way you're gonna get that.

Yeah eye no eye cannot unmaster all that compression but eye can get a lot of the tub out 2 attempt to bring it closer 2 the original master mix eq that prince intended

There is the original mix that eye wish would be released ... which is then mastered for an album sequence ... which is then mastered again fir format pressed (cd tape vinyl mp3 hi def) .. and then we get the wretched remasters which are even worse than than the loudness wars that produced the cb set which sounds better than say the remasters or recent stuff like screwdriver or breakdown which also are brickwalled

Eye want aoa unmastered .. just the raw final mixes ... same with cb and sottsd .. maybe .. we got let it be naked so who knows

Any whoo ..

you guys really want them to play god with cb98, which they won't because every facet is going to sound exactly the same as the original release? why spend time re-doing an old compilation album when they could just be releasing/re-releasing the songs as originally recorded.

i do however eagerly await the vinyl master of this, hopefully it makes it more tolerable

i edited jam of the year into my unreleased version of movie star, it's how prince would've wanted it

From a curative perspective, it's frustrating to many (including myself), that Prince wouldn't afford his "classic" period more respect. From a more obsessive (and perhaps possessive) perspective, it must be outright offensive to have witnessed Prince's bad habit of tinkering with older works - erasing instruments, changing lyrics, even not releasing songs in the first place. The man had no respect for his fans, nor for his vastly superior 1980s self. Sacrilege.

No respect for his fans, or for his own work? Absolute rubbish.

As fans, and people supporting his output, we are also allowed to voice our opinions.

Crystal ball was a decent but inconsistent, erratic attempt at a vault release.

Considering how long ppl waited for an official vault release, that was a really haphazard release.

Yeah he can do what he likes. But I'm equally allowed to be dissatisfied. I paid about £60 for it!

I read elsewhere that Diamonds and Pearl's will have 8 cds of unreleased music.

I find that hard to believe as the price of the set would be very high.

I read the same. Perhaps it will be offered in multiple formats? Though these sets are really only designed for the hardcore anyway. If it's the size of the 1999 SDE, rather than an over-sized book, it may reduce the price. Or maybe a disc or two could be download only?

the 8 cd's figure was nothing more than an estimation, and i suspect it included things like alternate mixes or slightly different recordings, which (while they need to be released eventually) don't fit within the scope of the SDE

I think you both misread or mis understood the post. It seems there ar enough outtakes (I guess this also includes demos and musical brain farts recorded for others) for Diamond and Pearls that could fill almost 8 80 minute CD's (like what was said of the 1999 SDE that could have filled at least 14 CD's full of outtakes and demos and alternate versions or edits) not that the SDE would contain 8 CD's of outtakes. We'll most like only get 2 or maybe 3 CD's worth of true outtakes and the demos of tracks for others will probably be left aside for anotrher Originals release or something. The alternate versions and unedited versions will probably never be releaesed like with 1999 SDE that didn;t contain the longer 1999, Little Red Corvette or the alternate All The Critcs.. that some have.

This is clearly what I think and what surely will be released in the next months to come...I don't see why The Estate will do something new...with D&P SPDLXE...same spirit ...same format as SOTT box set!
