Should have been just Stevie if you ask me. Seems that would have made a lot more sense. But what do I know??

This was the real tribute on that show, for me. This and people standing up from their seats as soon as they heard Prince's voice.

Lets be honest, lots of you weren't going to like what she did no matter what it was. If you don't like Madonna, if you find her emotionless etc then this wasn't ever going to be the tribute for you.

Some of us are fans of both and for me, as a fan of both, I found the tribute to be fine. I loved what she wore, wasn't mad on the song choice but I get why she did "nothing compares to you" and the lyrics fitted perfectly. I thought her singing was okay, at least it was live. It wasn't over done, and over all I enjoyed it.

I am also looking forward to seeing what else will come with all the other tributes that happen and I'm sure along the way there will be something to suit everyones idea of a tribute.

Personally I would have liked to hear her talk about Prince and her experiences over the many years she knew him. But even if she had done this there would be a large proportion of you who wished she hadn't done that and said she had made it all about her by discussing her experiences.

Hang on and wait for the tribute that you like.

Have you had your + signs today?

Plus spot the central contradiction of this bitchfest: Prince is unmatchable in their eyes then they're angry the artist wasn't "worthy".

It was a little too soon for a tribute, I understand why they picked somber songs about loss instead of upbeat songs (which would then have been "butchered" by most fan's estimate).

I'm hoping for something more celebratory of this legacy at the Grammys, they should have a bnch of artists covering a medley of his songs with everyone from the Time to the Revolution being bandleadered by Sheila E. while Rosie and Jill handle backup around Lisa.

The fact remains that she isnt worthy of doing a tribute to Prince on this scale (no quotation marks around the word worthy). She stands for everything Prince did not. Here is a middle aged woman who recently appeared in public with her entire ass out - something Prince wouldnt do or endorse now (and something he did and transcended about 25 years ago). She isnt a real musician - Janelle Monet, Alicia Keys, and Spaulding are young women who are real musicians who didnt whore themselves out like strumpets to get fame - thus Prince approved of that BET tribute done for him about a half dozen years ago - when he wasnt on the charts and "folks" were not buying his records like they are now. She stands for everythng Prince didnt endorse - blatant and mindless sex and homosexual displays on TV, prostituting for profit and fame, and no regard to true musicianship and artistry.

Madonna's tribute to Prince on Billboard Awards: U got the look, not the voice

Stevie Wonder and Madonna offer "Purple Rain"/ Associated Press photo

Stevie Wonder and Madonna offer "Purple Rain"/ Associated Press photo

Madonna let us down again.

Although she may not have been everyone’s first choice, it made a certain amount of sense to have Madonna perform a tribute to Prince on Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards.

After all, they were born the same year and wrote and recorded a tune together (“Love Song” on her 1989 album “Like a Prayer”). They were both big stars in the ‘80s who have continued to command huge respect. And he went to see her in concert last year in St. Paul, and then he performed for her later that night at his Paisley Park studios.

But Madonna’s performance on Sunday said more about her strengths and weaknesses than it did about Prince’s prowess or legacy.

Madonna looked the part. Emerging on a purple throne, she was dazzling in a silver-and-lavender paisley suit, complete with lacey gloves and an ornate cane. Madonna always looks fabulous.

The sentiment of the song “Nothing Compares 2 U” – which Prince wrote for his 1985 side project the Family but Sinead O’Connor made famous in ’90 – certainly was apropos.

But asking Madonna to sing a ballad only shows that she doesn’t have the vocal chops to pull off a highly emotional tune that demands considerable range.

Furthermore, watching Madonna slowly descend a staircase with the aid of a cane wasn’t in the best taste. It summoned images of Prince, wracked by pain that we’ve learned about since his death on April 21, hobbling with a cane.

Madonna has always been at her best on dance numbers. Prince, of course, dazzled on dance numbers, ballads, medium-tempo tunes, rockers – pretty much all kinds of things.

Pairing Madonna with Stevie Wonder on the ensuing “Purple Rain” was a more prudent move for the Billboard Awards. Dressed in a black suit with a prominent purple scarf tied around his neck, Wonder took the first line, “I never meant to cause you any sorrow.”

Madonna picked up with “I never meant to cause you any pain.” From there, the duet progressed, with audience members eventually waving special wristbands with purple lights in unison. The moment felt right, even without a spine-tingling guitar solo -- and with Madonna sounding a bit insincere when she proclaimed at the end, “Most of all, thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you've given us."

Perhaps more fitting words were spoken by Roots drummerAhmir “Questlove” Thompson when he rhapsodized before Madonna emerged on her throne. Fighting back tears, he said, "All of us live in the land of music and his departure was an earthquake."

I want to see what BET will do since they seem to dismiss that Madonna bullshit. Even though though don't own it anymore, it will be most appropriate to see what Prince's people will do to honor their legendary brother who they never stopped loving.

Not going to sit here and bash Madonna's performance. She actually did a decent job singing. I don't think she chose the right to sing though. The problem to me was that Billboard didn't seem to do enough leading in to her performance. I don't think we needed a 10 min video like some have suggested, but a short video of his work would have helped.

It just felt like it was all about Madonna and too focused on the big stage show and making her look good.

All that 80s imagery is getting tired. He was about more than that.

I agree the BET response was low class. The tribute tonight was overall unworthy of Prince. The good: Madonna's outfit and the chair. The bad: The song could have been given some actual feeling. The background images were the worst part of the tribute. They didn't even try with that. Baffling. The PR sing-along was a decent idea but the execution was horrible. I want those 3 hours of my life back. The highlight of the show: Celine Dion.

I am no fan of BET (Black Exploitation Television) but I don't consider their tweet "low class." I think it was intended to reassure all of us that they plan to give Prince a proper tribute. Did they throw shade? Yes. But the shade didn't strike me as low class, just good, competitive bravado. I have always criticized BET but if they come correct with a Prince tribute, I might change my tune (at least somewhat). After that tweet, they better get it turned up and get it out of control.

Billboard stood behind their decision to have Madonna do a tribute to Prince, and good for them to stand behind a decision they made in the face of adversity. But, I do think an apology is now in order! wink

I don't recall ever seeing an awards show tribute that showed graveyard imagery... eek

I liked her outfit....

>

I was not sure if I saw her actually leaning or using the cane..almost like she was emphasizing the pain.(for effect) I am not sure --I would have to watch that again..but I said to people in the room with me who were watching. But she did seem saddened to me.

>

I do believe that she knew she could not pull this off (who really could)..which is why Stevie Wonder was entrusted to 'help' the situation.

>

I think the crowd liked holding up the purple lights as gimmicks.....but overall when they shot to the audience..I didn't think some of the audience was respectful. Whether we liked the performance or not, it was a dedication to one of the greatest...That generation is just into crappy singing, lip synching, and as 'not real musicians"..as opposed to Prince's Real Music with Real Musicians.

>

I think if they were not going to do it justice, they would have been better off with a 10-15 minute memorial type flashback or summary or HIS own work or vidoes or concert clips.... That may have caused more appreciation from that audience or even tears. Why did they have to run out and just plop someone "relevant' on the stage like a rushjob....It didn't make sense, however I guess she tried her best.

>

Bottom line is....I really don't think ANYONE-- is ready for fill in for P at this time....which is why I believe vidoes, concerts, etc as a feature in the show would have worked better. MAybe some words from people close to him a la Questlove...

No one can fill those shoes this early. (or ever).. It has only been a month. Maybe a dedication like that LATER, as time begins to heal the passing...we would be more tolerant of an attempt like hers....

I want to go back over the video to see the background video they showed. I did not care for that and I too thought I saw the word Death in there.

Not the disaster it could have been. Worst thing was the choice of imagery on the screens; whoever thought burning Prince symbols and graveyards was a good idea needs their head examined.

Madonna looked fantastic, and sang as well as she probably can. She looked genuinely emotional to at times, and anyone who says that's faked clearly hasn't seen Madonna act ... she's really not that good! smile

My gosh my gosh my gosh...This literally broke my heart even more. I went into it knowing this would most likely not be great, BUT I was holding out hope anyway. :/ (foolish me) When the beginning started and the lights turned purple and the intro to Let's Go Crazy started...I literally busted out crying. I remember when he would perform and you'd hear his voice start that song and people would just lose their minds. But this time, for a split second, as the lights dimmed, I got excited like OMG HERE HE COMES!!! Then I remembered.....he's not going to come on stage anymore....and my heart sank and the tears flowed.

I didn't like the performance and said ok...fine, they have the purple set. Great. But those pictures in the background of a cemetary and what not!? WTF was that!? I think they should have just played pictures or concert footage of him through the years...but I think Madge wouldn't want the attention off of her crowing through Nothing Compares 2 U. Omg...I gasp as I say this but I would almost have rathered Sinade sing it because Madge butchered the song. Wow...

So I went to bed heartbroken and sad...but thought to myself...there really isn't anyone that can give him a tribute because no one NO ONE compared to him. It will be hard to please us Prince fans and any tribute I think will just be something we will either hate, be disappointed, or feel somewhat lukewarm about.

I saw BET tweet out that they are having a tribute in June.......I won't hold my breath but will hope they don't pull this type of tribute. Please!

Prince, we know you are probably smirking at some of these tributes. LOL. Just know we all miss YOU so much it hurts daily. sad

And ironically just after I wrote my comments..I just saw a really nice Prince Interview w Mel B.....And in it Prince talks about criticism and I guess how reviewers, people, writers criticize his music, etc.... And he was saying in general, that criticizing an artist and the work they produce, is like criticizing a gift from God...Guess most of us are guilty on that one here...
