That wasn't worth DVRing in the end. The show producers ought to have called up D'Angelo.

Well what can I say but I told you so to all the Madonna Zombies over at Madonna Nation Forums that band me for merely telling the truth. For me all I wanted was simplicity and something heartfelt. See I felt they should have had his sister give a speech then lead by the Revolution a beautiful instrumental of Purple Rain and have the place mic'd for the audience. Let all of his peers sing Purple Rain and let it happen organically so not to seemed forced. For that I got band.

I just think it's sad that the Madonna Zombies don't get that this wasn't about her or even them. For them they treated this as almost a victory lap, as if to celebrate that they won. What they fail to understand is that we the true Prince fans/friends we will never have another opportunity to see him live ever again. For them it wouldn't have mattered who past away. As long as she was giving the tribute they would be okay with it. For them it's all about seeing their queen up on the stage once again no matter the reason why. Not caring that it was not the tribute that we wanted. So I guess long live the queen and thank you Madonna Zombies for telling us what is good for us. Thank you for telling us that we should be thanking her for paying tribute to someone that they perceive to be underneath her.

A perfect tribute would have been, after QL's intro, showing a 10-minute video of exploring P's extraordinary and lenghty career--the hits, the movies, the live shows, etc., with voice overs of him talking about his influences and various clips of interviews. Follow that up with an all-star jam session with The Revolution, Sheila E., Chaka, Larry Graham, Lenny Kravitz, Mavis Staples, and The Time. Perfection.

What if they were being saved for another tribute concert?

I don't know why fans get so worked up about this particular tribute. There will most likely be dozens of other Prince tributes in the coming months....featuring those and other artists.Madonna did hers...now wait patiently for the other ones. It's no big deal.

Good job by Madonna. I hated the BET thing. No t productive.

I'm done with this nonsense negativity. Think I'm quiting all this until we may get some vault releases
[Edited 5/22/16 21:16pm]

I agree the BET response was low class.
The tribute tonight was overall unworthy of Prince. The good: Madonna's
outfit and the chair. The bad: The song could have been given some actual feeling. The background images were the worst part of the tribute. They didn't even try with that. Baffling. The PR sing-along was a decent idea but the execution was horrible. I want those 3 hours of my life back. The highlight of the show: Celine Dion.

Any tribute should consist of former bands members from the Revolution, NPG, and 3rd Eye Girl. They are the only ones who know how to play Prince's songs the way he wanted. Then have singers like Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Judith Hill, Maxwell, Esperanza Spaulding coming in to do various songs. And mix it up with uplifiting and uptempo songs like Mountains, Anna Stesia, Alphabet St, Forever in My Life, and Girls and Boys. Turn it into a party because that's the way Prince would have wanted it. And leave Purple Rain alone or better yet show clips of Prince performing or talking between performances.

That might have been a perfect tribute, but it wouldn't have been appropriate for just another of many by-the-numbers awards shows. Artists of all stripes pass away fairly regularly, and usually within a short period there is some awards show popping up on the telly.

It's not and has never been a practice to set aside a significant chunk of time for a well researched, in-depth tribute to whichever one most recently passed away. The Billboard tribute was on par with how such things are typically handled, and even then it's only for a handful of performers at the top of their respective fields.

Yup - most likely. The estate has already said they will be doing something, and it may even be planned to film or live broadcast.

Sooooo disappointing. I loved seeing Questlove and Stevie, but Madge doesn't know how to surrender to someone else. It always appears to be about her even when she is suppose to honor someone else. It really isn't her fault, but it would have been better if Sheila E., Morris, Andre or other protégés were in the mix for this Prince tribute.😔😔

Honestly I thought I could do it better myself, not gonna lie! lol But it was touching to know that his dear friends and many others were hearing. Instead of the actual performance we can look 2 to the emotions and feelings they wanted 2 express.

MissMarySharon

I've just skimmed through it. I like some of Madonna's stuff and mean her no disrespect, but I've always found her to be an unemotional singer. Prince was light years ahead of her in terms of breadth of talent, and when he sang, you could feel like his heart was breaking sometimes. They should have shown one of the vids where he shared the stage with others and basically wiped the floor with them.

The only tribute I've valued has been fDeluxe. These people worked with Prince for years, knew him well, fought with him sometimes, loved him. It really touched me how they all came together right after his death to honour him.

Life goes on, and Billboard are just doing their thing, they needed a big name to promote their show etc. Mostly I can't stand to hear other people singing his songs right now anyway. I don't think Prince would have been pleased to hear Sheila and Larry described as "irrelevant" but sadly he is no longer here to continue to fight for real music played by real musicians (not referencing Stevie Wonder here btw).
