Thanks for this article! It's by someone who was at the October Paisley Park performance that Madonna attended. Really cool. Seems they were friendly, and Madonna was definitely in awe of his talent. Last night, I hated Madonna's tribute, but today, I think it was alright and that bringing Stevie on stage was awkward - she should have just done it alone.

She was never know as a good singer. I think it was adequate for what was expected. At least she showed some emotion, looked like she was about to cry throughout. That's a tough song for anyone who is getting chocked up.

I hope Stevie sticks to the piano for the BET show.

Agree with you.
It has to be emotionally hard for anyone trying to do a tribute I just watched the youtube clip honestly thought Madonna did not do that bad, I thought She did better than Stevie...but again this has got to be hard for them. She did not make it about her either. I did not like the pictures behind her that was horrible and in very bad taste ...was the reason I started crying.

Wow!! I never ever thought I would live to see the day where Madonna is getting thrashed and trashed repeatedly on the org. She used to be put on such a high pedalstal here years ago...I guess most of those Maddie fan orgers are gone now. It's catch 22..I still think the fans would have found something to complain and criticize about (no matter who did the tribute).

Step outside the Org. That performance is getting the side-eye beyond this place....And again, I didn't mind Madge stepping up to the plate to give a tribute to Prince. It made a lot of sense culturally. But Madonna ain't built for THAT. She's better on uptempo numbers. More importantly, that performance lacked LIFE....

It was flat....Even with Stevie coming in to save the day....

After that performance just remember Prince couldn't get a record contract as good as Madonna's.

That's because he didn't sell like Madonna. "True Blue" has sold more than "Purple Rain"!

Man, people have terrible taste in music.

I disagree. People listen to what's constantly shoved down their throats, on TV, radio and online. It's easie than to think for themselves. Same thing with politics, etc.

"Stop making stupid people famous" could easily be changed to "Stop making talentless people famous".

I'm not much of a Madonna fan, but I don't dislike her music, either.

I thought the tribute was beautiful. I cried, and I surely didn't expect to. I felt her performance was lovely, she was in tune and it seemed very heartfelt. As someone said, she didn't make it about herself, it was a sincere tribute to Prince. (And that's a very difficult song to sing without being pitchy but she sang it well.)

I listened again this morning to see what all the hating was about, and I teared up again.

There's a Jon Bream article about it, where he also says it's not very good.

He was one of Prince's biggest supporters in the beginning and middle of his career, but was brutally honest with his critiques at the end. My point in saying that, is that Jon Bream is the real deal and not a "Prince worshipper". If he says it's bad, then it's probably bad. He's not going to risk his own reputation and credibility by writing a puff piece about Madonna.

I teared up a bit too, where certain lyrics hit home more than others. And then when the larger than life photos of Prince were shown on the backdrop I fully realized (again) that P is gone.

Having said that, the Madonna tribute triggered memories and feelings already in me . . . that's not to say that her tribute was "good". I think she benefited from this being the first awards show tribute in that regard.

Don't miss out on D'Angelo! He brought his A-game and even got choked up during the performance.

He played piano and sang Sometimes It Snows In April, which was a very nice break from the dozens of Purple Rain tributes being done.

I didn't want to comment till I saw it, I had to watch the YouTube link someone posted. I don't doubt there was emotion in her performance but she just didn't have the chops for that song. The thing with madonna is she is so jaded that it's difficult for her to appear sincere. She always seems to be smirking these days..or is it the surgery?
I don't know. I do like some of her songs.. rain..being one of them.

It was okay, quite cheesy..and trying too hard on her part. There was no soul..certainly nothing that reflected Prince's spirit. I have an issue with the graveyard pictures, they were beyond tacky and just dreadful.
Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Setting fire to his symbol? No, just no. To really portray purple rain in its full glory they should have got a choir on stage behind them with their beautiful voices ringing out..not that lame crowd..with rhianna singing like she's at a birthday barbecue.

Overall? Ok but could have been much much better.

Thank u Madonna and Stevie,

U showed respect and class and the emptiness we all feel.

U did good. But it was still the hardest thing I ever and ever will have had to watch on television next to the Staples Center fiasco in 2009.

Why didn't God take me 04/21. I hate him right now for that!

This world is the night of the living dead for me now. I should not be here! cry

Yeah it does get a bit emotional.. the news was still so new and the feelings so raw with them at that moment when D did the show. I teared up watching that.

Change it one more time..

Maybe they are just being honest and in need of defending Madonna? I know a couple of them (Madonna fans on the org), and they like what they like about her, but they also are very honest if they dislike something.

I first thought it would be a good idea to make Madonna part of a tribute ( but only part of a tribute, not the whole thing), and then I got a bit worried that it´s going to be all about her, and to some extent it was.

I found her performance a bit boring, and she could´ve benefitted greatly if some of Prince´s closer associates would ´ve been involved.

The fact that Prince and her hung out and had gotten a bit closer again over the last decade, and of course the Paisley Park event in her honor made it more acceptible for me that she did the tribute, because I get the impression that they had a good time together and Prince would´ve appreciated this. But I fully understand that many people , including people in Prince´s camp, are not very happy with her doing the tribute.

At the end of purple rain his symbol was swamped by flames. Honestly those graveyard scenes were like Night of the living dead or the freeking Exorcist. I half expected that exorcist chick to crawl down the stairs crab style. Perhaps they should have got some zombies on stage to join madonna in purple rain. Gruesome.

I fully understand the displeasure too - I actually agree with the critiques, including Andre Cymone's. But yes, I think Madonna really did respect him and was obviously very influenced and inspired by him, and this piece from October shows me they were cool with each other, maybe even planning stuff together for the future. That makes me more OK with the tribute - I think if she had done it at her own concert, it'd be very well received by everyone as respectful and heartfelt.
