I can't stop laughing, but it's laughter that is numbing my pain. I am not laughing because it is funny either, I am laughing because this did no justice to Prince. They could have had an amazing singer sing with Stevie, oh lord. I don't know what to do now. This is just heartbreaking. E and F for the effort.

I think Questlove was flustered and emotional. Madonna looks really sad, I hope she makes it through. Why did she pick this song?

Prince was like his musical father, I doubt he would be who he is without him.

I suggest everyone read his memoir because it's actually all really dedicated to Prince in a way, it came out maybe 3 years ago.

Very emotional for me. It was from a good place. They cared and honored Prince and that's what mattered.

Totally unimpressed. Prince deserved better than that. Just my opinion.

there are no freaking words for how bad that was!!!!
Are you kidding me!!! They showed about 5 pictures of Prince for 30 seconds in the background and 5 minutes of graveyard pictures. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!!!
Madonna could barely sing.
What and the fuck was that?!?!

I think Questlove is backstage kicking her ass right now

Not feeling the Madonna/Stevie bit. Seems uninspired.

I am starting to appreciate D'Angelo's Late night with Jimmy Fallon more. There was something missing.

I thought it was beautiful. To have all those purple lights throughout the arena, and with everyone singing together...
RIP Prince. We will NEVER forget you. Thank you so much.

but

you know how prince would lead the audience and if they didn't sing it well enough he'd do that head shake and stop the music and be like nuh-uh

yeah, he was doing that tonight. 💜

There was no joy or celebration-we should really be celebrating. The song was sad and the pictures were sad and of a cemetary???? I expected more from Madonna, and Billboard.

NOTE TO STEPHEN HILL at BET-You better bring it!!!!!!

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

Thank You Prince

Stop with the sanitized scrubbed down schmaltz...I was hoping she would give a tribute to our Rayal Badness. Who's gonna do Erotic City?

Both Madonna and Stevie sounded off key to me...

But when the tribute opened with Princes voice tears started to form in my eyes, and they ran down my cheek when his pics appeared on the big screen behind her.

It was what it was.

There can never be a tribute that would do him justice.

WEll let's hope by Grammy time....a somwhat proper one can be put togehter. I was notn feeling that at all...

Though..as someone said...they did it from a heartfelt place....I guess it's true..That is the most important thing...

When I was watching the show, and the audeince....I became down...for the future of our music. sad Most in that audience so young and unaware to even recgonize Prince for his greatness. THAT made me sad.

Madonna did a decent job covering Nothing Compares 2 U, I can see why she'd pick this one. But following it with a Purple Rain singalong felt forced. Still a touching tribute.

IMO the song choice was predictable, I too wanted some funky jams, but then again I wanted to see Sheila E, The Time etc, I give it a B for overall effort, Madonna's outfit an A for the fashion slay.

i seriously doubt any slick, well-thought-out, super-produced tribute this year will ever match, in performance value, the heartwrenching perfection of D'Angelo slicing open his heart at Prince's piano on Fallon.

*

there might be better career retrospectives than we saw tonight (it won't be hard to top just projecting five very well-known photos - yawn) but for sheer musicality and winning song choice, i believe that ship has sailed.

*

unless one of the remaining tributes (BET, etc) agrees to put a close Prince collaborator/bandmate onstage and lets them to rip into a classic - which i highly, highly doubt on both counts - i think we've already seen the high water mark for tributes to the man.

*

i'm just going to go back to doing what i've been doing, which is listening to the Prince songs i need to hear in any given moment.

I found the performance dreary and unsatisfying. One big zero. Well, at least she nailed Prince's sartorial style.
