I think it was meant for the fans and I, personally thought it quite touching. I saw it right after watching that tribute, which i thought was dreadful, sorry. That teaser felt like someone was telling me: "Yeah, we know you feel that wasn't a proper tribute, but you can count on us for that". It sounds like they already know what the fans want or would like tribute wise. I just hope they don't mess it up.

I listened again this morning to see what all the hating was about, and I teared up again.

The hating is mostly unwarranted. Just look at what was posted here .... bitching because Madonna is white ... bitching because she hasn't been on the charts in a while and is therefore not "relevant" .... bitching because she didn't "feel the loss" as deeply as others.

Well, last time I checked Stevie and Questlove are black and a huge portion of Prince's fanbase is white.

If recent hits are what make a singer "relevant", does that make Stevie "irrelevant"?

And Madonna was tearing up and shaking, she clearly was affected by his passing.

But hey, let's keep bashing. Nothing better to do, right?

Nothing could be more terrible than the slapdash garbage we saw last night. So much for flat-singing Madonna delivering an unforgettable performance. Prince deserves better and so does his fan base.

I refused to watch too. But today the news did a story about how terribe Madonna's voice was during her tribute to Prince ..... so of course, I watched the video. I can't believe she sat in his Purple Throne.... and used a cane... and basically pretended to take his place and be Prince. She was terrible. Of all the wonderful perfomers associated iwth Prince and his Music -- performers who actually sang songs he wrote.... Billboard chose Madonna????? Horribe choice - she's such the opposite of Prince. Prince was generous and kind and a philantripist -- she's all about herself.

The only good thing about the tribute was that they brought Stevie Wonder out to sing the 2nd song. He was lovely. He should have done the whole tribute -- he loved Prince and connected with him on so many levels -- not like Madonna who is always outly out for herself! Choosing her was souless!

As much as I don't care for Madonna, she is from the same era and they at least worked together. Still would've been cool if they chose somebody like D'Angelo or Questlove.

The fact that they from the same era means nothing. Many others were. Sorry, I don't like Madonna and would never think of putting them on the same "league". They are clearly miles apart. The only thing that connects them is the 80s and a few collaborations. The idea of them both touring together... I'm glad he did not go through with it.

I agree - it was a terrible idea to ask her to sing the tribute to him. I refused to watch till today when the new reported that her voice was terrible during the tribute. What I saw was terrible -- I dislike her even more -- her tribute was all about her dressing like him, sitting in his purple throne and using a cane -- what a disaster -- shame on her!

This is my opinion. Remember that. Opinion.

I am not happy at all that Madonna is paying tribute to the one and only true king Prince. She may be a legend and might be the best selling female artist of all time but I still think she's not worthy enough to pay tribute to our guy. I'll admit that I was a fan of hers years ago but that was years ago. I can't stand her attitude and potty mouth. Madonna is no where near the same league as Prince.

I'll admit that nobody will ever be good enough in my mind to pay tribute but we should have gotten someone that Prince worked with or at least a legendary musician like Paul or Bruce or someone with a good voice like George Michael. I know Billboard wants someone the kids like me will recognize so they could've also gone with Bruno Mars.

I don't know if I'll watch the tribute, I probably will since curiosity always gets the best of me but I already sense in my consiousness that this tibute will not be pretty. I certainly hope it's better than Lady Gags tribute to David Bowie where she tried tomake it about herself. That's also another reason why I don't want M to do the tribute. Attention seekers should never be allowed to do tributes to anyone.

I agree 100%!!!!

if they opened it up to be a multiple musician thing there are a whole bunch of people i can think of

I love Stevie. But I thought he was terrible too. I'll say it. Madge and Stevie are two artists that obviously are not comfortable outside their own songs.

.

BET better bring former band members and associates for a jam. Also the likes of Andre3000, Lenny, Bruno, Janelle, Erykah, Questlove, Maybe a Beyonce for ratings and star power. Whatever. Let's have a big old 'Baby, I'm A Star' for 15 minutes with P looming large in the background, with footage and pics. Be bold and different.

.

No Purple Rain. Can they do that? Please?

Ok - thought long and hard about it. I didn't see the tribute, I didn't miss anything -but a picture and some news about it tells me all I need to know. Madonna is a strong business professional, why would she put herself in a position to get so much backlash. But you know what they say about press? ANY press is good. Does she have something new coming out? Just wondering...wink, wink. Please indulge me, I need to rant....

1. Even going into it, Madonna + Prince music = trainwreck. If she were to give a speech, that would be something TOTALLY different then, like she had for MJ - which I thought was respectful, but a little bit about her though.

2. The outfit - she didn't wear a white beaded glove when she spoke of MJ? It was in POOOR taste as ANYONE dressed in that type of outfit AUTOMATICALLY thinks Prince. It was a little disrespectful. The cane? C"MON! A nice white pant suit with a purple symbol on the lapel, ok.

3. The drama of the throne. No one can tell me that all of this WASN"T about Madonna. Look at me!...Look at how much I love Prince...bs. That throne, should have been set up w/ one light, up high, ONLY a guitar proped up in the seat. It would have been more powerful of a visual or should have been left out completely.

4. The song - are you kidding me? The song is awesome, but (for me) it has weird connotations with it since Sinead did it and all the Arsenio Hall crap. There should have not been any singing of Prince's music - hey kids! I have an idea, why don't we just let Prince speak for himself? After all, isn't that what he has always wanted? To let the music speak. Gawd....it drives me crazy.

5. Her voice - was not up to par. Was she sick? Then she shouldn't have been doing it. Was she nervous? What for? Perhaps she knew she was doing something she shouldn't have been. She wouldn't be so nervous if she were to give a speech.

6. Stevie was there. I can only think that this was to "save" her. Give her cred? Stevie and friends could certainly do a 1 hour special doing music and sharing stories about Prince and we'd watch right? Why would he sign up to save Madge? Poor Stevie.

7. The backdrop -a cemetary? First, how morose. Second, this is what they could come up with? Third, Really?

8. According to reports, it was Madonna that CAME to Billboard seeking to do something. This is what they agreed upon. If it were me, I would've said - thank you but no thank you. We can include you, but you won't be doing this - singing. They had a month! This idea was terrible. They just phoned this one in. I heard they had a few pictures - a afterthought. Sad.

And for those that come back and say, "No one could have done a tribute justice...blah, blah, blah," ABC and related companies that put on these shows have production designers, peoplpe that make important decisions - THIS IS THIER JOB, bright innovative, forward thinkers, creative genius' -apparently not..

Finally, as I'm writing this, I can't help but think Prince would've been a bit embarrassed for Madonna, he probably would have put his partially closed hand up to his mouth (as if to cough),

cast his eyes downward and flash a quiet little smirk. (You know the one - where he wants to laugh but holdin' it back)

Thank you for listening/reading. No one I can share this with but you all. Peace and Love.

P.s. No pressure BET! All love.

I don't recall ever seeing an awards show tribute that showed graveyard imagery... eek

Birds, sky, clouds, flowers, etc. would have been better but tacky seems to be a growing trend.

  1. I agree - that was probably Madonna's input - she's dark - not light/love like Prince.

At the end of purple rain his symbol was swamped by flames. Honestly those graveyard scenes were like Night of the living dead or the freeking Exorcist. I half expected that exorcist chick to crawl down the stairs crab style. Perhaps they should have got some zombies on stage to join madonna in purple rain. Gruesome.

Plus spot the central contradiction of this bitchfest: Prince is unmatchable in their eyes then they're angry the artist wasn't "worthy".

It was a little too soon for a tribute, I understand why they picked somber songs about loss instead of upbeat songs (which would then have been "butchered" by most fan's estimate).

I'm hoping for something more celebratory of this legacy at the Grammys, they should have a bnch of artists covering a medley of his songs with everyone from the Time to the Revolution being bandleadered by Sheila E. while Rosie and Jill handle backup around Lisa.

The fact remains that she isnt worthy of doing a tribute to Prince on this scale (no quotation marks around the word worthy). She stands for everything Prince did not. Here is a middle aged woman who recently appeared in public with her entire ass out - something Prince wouldnt do or endorse now (and something he did and transcended about 25 years ago). She isnt a real musician - Janelle Monet, Alicia Keys, and Spaulding are young women who are real musicians who didnt whore themselves out like strumpets to get fame - thus Prince approved of that BET tribute done for him about a half dozen years ago - when he wasnt on the charts and "folks" were not buying his records like they are now. She stands for everythng Prince didnt endorse - blatant and mindless sex and homosexual displays on TV, prostituting for profit and fame, and no regard to true musicianship and artistry.

Amen! You said it all in a nutshell! She is the "anti"-Prince -- it was an abomination to have her pay tribute to him. It was a joy seeing Prince make his metamorphasis from an emphasis on sexuality/flesh to pure/love/God -- this tramp is 57 years old and still has her ass hanging out in open air. She is so unenlightened. Prince took us on a journey to find truth and love and God. What's Madonna's message? Show you ass??? She is a such a selfish, self-centered person. Prince loved humanity and gave and gave and gave. What has she given? Of all the people that coud have done a tribute she was the last one that should have been chosen. And, is anyone else offended that she's dressed like him, sitting in Prince's purple throne and using Prince's cane???? All while Prince's sign is being burned in the video behind her? This appeared to be a satanic ritual - not a tribute --

Yes. Someone should start a petition to BET and the Grammys and clarify that nobody can do justice to his material the way he can, get an agreement with his Estate and broadcast something the masses have never seen before to demonstrate the real reason why the industry admired him so much.

Change it one more time..

I'm no Madonna fan, however I do believe, regardless of facts that she is still human. I haven't seen the tribute here un the UK other than news snippets. I genuinely think she adored prince for his talent. The woman is narcissistic and shallow but she's clever. She's also desperate but that's another conversation. At the end of the day the most famous woman in the world gave tribute to Prince.
