Probaby meant for both Prince and his fans. But, either way - their heart is in the right place - they want to honor prince - not burn his sign, sit in his throne and post disgusting pictures symbolic of his death in an elevator. A Sensational Artis passed who was such a generous philanthropist, a man who taught us to seek truth and God. You don't send that kind of a saint off the way Madonna did! And, BET gets it! They're going to pay tribute to him - not disrespect him!

THe B in BET is why they get it - no matter how many people want to seperate Prince from that B and deny where he came from, what made him, and what he was to the end.

Good enough to make me a weepy mess, so it did its job. "Nothing Compares 2 U" in particular was incredibly moving.

Here's what I wrote at the time:

Thank you, Madonna, for the beautiful tribute. I watched it twice, and was reduced to a weepy mess both times. "Nothing Compares 2 U" has never hit me like it did during this performance, and for that I will always be grateful.

It appears that she has caught some flak for her performance, and that bums me out. I think that a couple things might be at play here. One is the fact that it is still such a strange, new world to inhabit for Prince fans. We don't know what the cause of his passing was yet. There is an unfortunate sideshow going on with presumed love children coming forth to stake their claim to the estate. The issue of what to do with his vast catalog of unreleased music is still very much unresolved. Not only are we grieving, but we are still bewildered by so many questions. Had this tribute happened in, say, 2 months time, its reception could have been much different.

On top of that, Prince has perhaps the most diverse fanbase there is. Given his longevity and his ability to perform and master so many different styles, it was inevitable that the fanbase would become its own sort of Uptown - black, white, Puerto Rican, everybody just a freakin'. As such, there is never a consensus among Prince fans, not that I would have it any other way. Whether it be the style of a new album or single, the proteges new and old, his stance on various issues, or his hairstyle, there have always been people who loved it and others who haven't. As such, no artist chosen to pay tribute would have met approval with everyone: not the Revolution, nor any incarnation of the NPG, nor 3rdEyeGirl.

For me, however, there was no person more suited to give such a tribute to Prince than Madonna. When I was 9 and just getting into music, there was Prince, and there was Madonna, ruling my personal airwaves. The fact that she was chosen to give the tribute took me all the way back to the very beginning of my fandom and resonated all the more powerfully as a result. In a strange bit of circumstance, I saw Prince in concert for the last of 27 times in February, and Madonna one month later. Then April 21st happened, and one month later, I saw Madonna again under the saddest of circumstances.

And while there are certainly differences between the two, there are so many reasons why they have been linked over the years. Both Prince and Madonna turned pop music into a true artform like few others. They both have broken through so many barriers and have shaped generations by redefining not just who we are, but how we see ourselves. Both are made of super tough stuff, weathering the ups and downs of the blinding spotlight that has enveloped them for so long. They have done this by coupling that tough midwestern blue collar work ethic with uncompromising bravery, and that is part of why I love them so.

In the months to come, there will be other tributes by other artists, some of whom I enjoy and others of whom I don't care for. But this is to be expected. It's a part of Prince's legacy that he touched so many people, and everyone deserves their chance to express their grief or their gratitude how they see fit. Madonna's performance seemed genuinely heartfelt to me, and I couldn't ask for anything more than that.

Because 1. I didn't watch the tribute. I won't watch the BET tribute either.
I have no emotional outburst of a reaction to the image.
Elevator is not my 1st or 2nd reaction. They you even had people saying that those were doves on the walls connecting it to When Doves Cry and the whole thing was to take a dig.
Just a few questions. What elevator that you know of looks like that? That just looks like a wallpapered corner of a room.

Opps lol that is a HUGE Elevator. I guess only the rich and famous can have an elevator with a full dining table in it lol

.

I tried to tell people to think about it. Not react emotionally, overly sensitive outbursts...

let's have a read @ what was posted on the org shall we...

eek

* It looks like she is standing in an elevator too. I couldn't stand her before so this just gives me even more reasons.

* I think Prince would've offered a few fashion tips for Madonna's latest photo escapade....just look at that jumper....shows her badly aging, tactlessness and giving herself a high five for trying to be controversial while appearing to draw attention (and riding on his coat tails) to Prince.Clash, class-less and sinking.Dealer black bag (?) - hmmm

* This photo is disgusting and crass. So wrong on so many levels. I hate her for this. She knows what she does. Hag.

* She is mocking the Death of Prince and the manner in which he died. How else is anyone with brain cells supposed to see this?

* Which now makes me suspect of her motivation for that wack ass tribute
* I suspected her motivation from jump because Billboard didn't ask her to do a tribute. It was her people who contacted them.
* Indeed. Especially with a purse that says, "Dealer." And to think I was giving her the benefit of the doubt; this photo is disrespectful in his memory.
* I saw that picture too....still doesn't explain the elevator.
* She's a troll.
And you're smug, pretending to be naive.
Deal with it.
* Yeah, that photo of her, appears like she is in an elevator, and then holding a purse marked 'dealer', giving the assumption that Prince had a dealer, is insulting. If she wanted to honor Prince with respect, that photo isn't the way to go. Proves she is taking advantage of Prince's passing, to bring attention to herself.
* Some people simply don't understand sybolism.

* Madonna is sick! And by sick I mean she needs mental help. Even if she's not in an elevator it looks like an elevator. She's dressed in purple and holding a bag that says "Dealer". Really? But she loves Prince? She has a frightening way of showing it. SMH
* I guess oldfriends don't see the symbolism
*

1+1=2

If one just had what appeared to be in elevator when its actually a corner of a room but then you have a bag with dealer on it also. We all know whats in the media about Prince and prescription drugs. And you say she is not poking fun of Prince dismise at all. Please!

* so.... Madge is a dealer, and that makes Prince a drugs user... wtf.... (how dares she!)....
Madge................ shut the fuck up, already DAMN!
I am disgusted, she has gone too far this time....

*

Anyone with 2 eyes can judge her intent here.

The fact that you are trying to jusify it says a great deal.
* Of course she knew what she was doing, I blame her and I can't come over it.
Madge you are either evil --- or very, very stupid..
* Do you typically find symbolism in arts/literature to be challenging? Do you get dry British humor? Does sarcasm confound you?
* U can't comprehend simple concepts how are in going to understand someone who has the capacity to think?
* I think people are outraged/alleging she is letting the worst elements of her personality run amok for personal gain at the expense of common decency.

^^^^
I tried to help. Because I new you all would be proven wrong. Jumping at ghosts and in Judging Madonna you've shown what was in you hearts.
Wow, just reading some of these posts by members is really sad.
As she said "I'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me"

What I wrote to Madonna;

You mocked him in life by dressing like him, burning the Symbol, displaying DEATH in the cemetery, made fun that he needed a cane,(hips) wore crosses (JW), chose wrong song, and if that wasn't bad enough, mocked him in death by posting a picture of yourself in purple in what purposely looks like the inside an elevator carrying a bag with the word DEALER on it.

I just have one question for you, how come you hate Prince so much?

Since you wrote to her and accused and judged her, are you going to write back and apologize?

I just think Prince had a natural class and talent that Madonna totally lacks.

Yes she does try (very) hard, but this is not just about efforts. Her performance proved that she couldn't do justice to the magnitude of Prince's genius. I know his level was hard to match and that it wasn't the purpose of the tribute, but I personnally think that he deserved something closer to his level (not just in fame value), and there were many other artists out there (Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, Esperanza Spalding or Alicia Keys to name a few) who could have done a much better job. She certainly wasn't his only friend, was she?

He was famous, she is famous. That's about all the similarities I can see here.

Also, doesn't Madonna kinda represent the elite of the big music corporation that he abhored?

hmmm

She is impervious to what anyone says about it, or her. "Self-expression is a hard and selfish thing. It eats everything, even the self".

Instead of slithering back into her ego driven lair, she , at almost 60 years of age, responds with the "I'm not your bitch, dont hang your shit on me" line. She attached a dance to it too. How thoughtful of her. You see, the line by itself was not going to inflict enough venom . She wanted maximum psychological penetration to ensure that you understand that even though this is about the DEATH OF SOMEONE, she has a right to express herself in any way she feels .

Now, that sounds harmless enough and seems as if she is just responding to all of the "haters" . This is until you read the lyrics of that entire song. Of all the lines she could come up with from all of the songs she's done, do we really think it was arbitrary?

Yes Madgesuccubus, "express yourself, don't repress yourself", even if you cast a dark shadow on your dear friend's memory, "It's human nature" ,and of course, you're not sorry.

Again, anything to maximize the attention for you. Imagine that. You're having a twitter/instagram back and forth with fans over YOUR performance, yet, this is supposed to be about the memory of your "beloved", Prince?

Everything she did that night served one purpose. She is an attention w**re and this was the best place to display that type of histrionic behavior. She gives new meaning to the word , eclipse.

Let's name the countless artists/musicians/politicians/ dignitaries/actors/etc.etc.etc. who has responded to Prince's death in some way or another. Give it a rest.
Let is go. You and many are responding to misinformed information about a photo
She wasn't in an elevator, those are not doves on the wall, the Dealer bag has nothing to do with drug speculation and she was not smiling in the photo

None of this is going 2 bring Prince back, it is not even going to help us move on. I don't think any tribute will. People are putting hope in this or that tribute, but they are setting themselves up. After the tribute are done, we will still feel in limbo wondering and waiting for something else to happen.

Only time will help. And 4 me seeing the people who made the best music with Prince performing in honor: the Time, the Revolution, Sheila E & the Family

Extrapolate from that same list the names of them that have managed to have the attention shift from the death of Prince unto themselves. We will wait patiently for your response.

But - but - but - I WANT TO BE C-C-C-C-C-RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY!

This stitched up corpse can't even recognize that her vocal performance was wretched and leave it at that. God knows she's had plenty of wretched vocal performances.

* If this was Rome, "MadgeSuccubus", would have been properly stoned for such a blasphemous act.

* The infamous purse.... "Dealer"... The "succubus'" feeble attempt at ambiguity. Instaneously , the "succubus" wields the power and wisdom of a mekubbal.

* For those who equate an opinion with words such as :hate/haters...How absolute and certain is that?

Before you guys engage in your nanny-nanny-poo-poo victory lap. Let's not pretend that the opposition and outcry to the tribute began with that photo because it most certainly didn't.

The debate about the "deal with it" photo actually didn't begin until 21 pages into this thread and the elevator statement did not originate on the org. It was said to be an elevator on instagram and in several online articles so stop acting like the story was invented on this site. I personally told Pokeno that if he knew differently then he should say so instead of race baiting and he did that....point taken.

"Deal with it" still doesn't sit well with me regardless.

Neither does the graveyard imagery, Prince symbol burning, poor vocal performance, exclusion of Prince's band members, insentive use of things associated with Prince such as the cane as well as many other points that were discussed on this thread well before the instagram pic surfaced.

People here as well as many people outside of the org, including some from the Prince camp itself don't like this so called tribute so stop pretending it's some "mob" behavior exclusive to this site because that is a lie too.

But no, start in the middle of the story instead of the beginning so you can gloat....org business as usual.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

OF4S? Have I offended you? you say "give it a rest".... I can understand it may be the sabbath for some, but that pompous performance will get no rest from me. You don't want me to express myself in the same way "madgesuccubus" felt it was her right to express herself? Do you think she is defiled by my post? This is how it starts, Madge.

I do hope she reads the innumerable amount of negative comments coming in from all over the world. I want her to read them until her eyeballs no longer point forward. After all, most of us who sat thru/watched that performance bare the scars of it. Are you kidding me? Would you do Purple Rain like that?

To set the record straight, You stated that no triubte will help us move on. What sort of powers do you possess to know such things? How is it you know that we are "setting ourselves up"? I'm not sure about you ,but I am not in limbo about his death, nor am I seeking closure about his passing. He is gone, his music lives.

Some of us dont care about any one singular component of that reprehensible thing she called a tribute. It was the compunding factors that caused the uproar.

I for one can tell you everythig starts with that trainwrecked vocal rendition of Purple Rain. Thats what caused me to almost go into a diabetic shock. The first song made me edgy , but the song we always associate with greatness and his legend ,is the thing that put me over the edge. The bag , the elevator , and the stupid social media responses are all the things she used to needle his fans that were in an uproar. What was her point?

FUNKNROLL

Who cares?
She knew what she was doing with those photos.
Let's talk about that thing she's desperately hoping we don't discuss.
Like anyone in showbiz, she's only as good as her last gig and it sucked.
Oh and her pretentious accent is pitiful.
