Loved it yesterday and love it even more today. Has a bit of a "Slide" by Slave appeal to it. This is the funkiest track that he has made in recent memory. Leaves me wanting more. Good job P.

First of all, this isn't the only place one could thank Prince. Second, are you saying Prince reads the org? Because if he doesn't, then a thank-you here means nothing as he would never know.

But for the record, I am glad and thankful this is free, although I haven't downloaded it. All I've done is listen to it.

OK - just listened to it for the first time.

FIRST THINGS FIRST listen:

Sounded upbeat, fun and a nice groove. I actually found my head bopping without realising so that is a good thing. Also I loved the ‘kiss’ bit just thought it was cool. Reminded me a bit of a song called, ‘Buddha of suburbia’ by David bowie where he just slips in the ‘space oddity’ guitar riff at one point and goes back to the song.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed the ‘computer blue’ guitar towards the end as it fades out the first time and then back in?

And also sexy Dancer. So that’s 3 hits in the one song?

SECOND THINGS FIRST:

Still sounds a bit upclose to the microphone (which has been a common problem the past few years... take a step back and let the voice out), intruments and voice it sounds like there is no guts to it. Maybe a wee bit over produced. Still digging the tune and still bopping.

The second verse where he says, ‘tell me what you wanna do..’ could have extended on that is a nice little melody however it pulls into a deeper funk tune from there.

Still enjoying it, I think it sounds like quite a cool bridge between two songs. It does sound hot. It has a sweaty hot feeling about it. Which if the album goes along these lines I think we are in for a treat to be honest.

[Edited 7/31/15 5:50am]

Ah, someone else noticed this too. The tracks that people complain about not having enough energy usually have that type of vocals on them. Tracks like these are certainly quite far removed from the Purple Rain -era aesthetic.

It's an ok track. A more satisfying listen than many other similar tracks.

This might be the record he truly showcases his skills as a bass player. However, I'm mot sure about how well these new tracks are going to work live because of the "intimate" nature of the recorded versions.

Probably won't have to worry about that too much as he really doesn't play much of his new work live anymore. Although I think he could pull this off easily live, as far as the jam goes, the vocals will obviously be pulled off differently, but I'd be surprised if we'd get to hear this live, but I'd love to be proven wrong smile

Prince's musicology part two has arived. Thar's what I thought after 20 seconds in the song. It has a lovely funky bassline and start out very promising. Prince builds up this track and you really start feeling that funky beat. But around 40 seconds into this track the hornsection kicks in and suddenly we are timewarped back to the sound of New Power Soul's I like Funky Music. Oh dear why!? The horror. So it starts as a hybrid creation...with a bit of potential still there but as the samples get mixed in and Kiss and Sexy dancer are starting to be a part of the menu you really start wondering where are we going? And more...do I want to go there?

I guess nowhere..this is sure no inovation, but more like a renovation, but at lowest price possible.

The track mellows in repetition and fades out...oh wait... no it doesn't the volume picks up again to showcase more of this new past untill silence finally brings joy to the ear. No passion, no direction and just a bad choice in production.

Nope this track is not doing it for me. But I still hope others will enjoy it.

Okay, here's my thoughts...

I've listened to the song and I think it's ok. The best parts for me were indeed the musical references of his songs past. Lyrically, I think it's same cookie cutter phonics he's been hooked on lately and musically - to me - it's Prince "funk by numbers" and he stayed within the lines. shrug

That's nice but speaking for myself as a TRUE FUNK SOLDIER! I say without a doubt that - FUNK - IT AIN'T! I am personally 'fiending for the FUNK' so bad that when I see people claiming and clamoring about his latest droppings being funk, it hurts when I listen and KNOW instantly that it ain't because FUNK hits ON THE ONE! wink headbang It does not require 10+ listens to try to digest. hammer

This ain't a funk song Hatrina! It's funky, but it's not a dancing funk song... it's a chill out with this song in the backround playing... reminds me of The Work, not 'New Position'. In concert is where this piece will me majestic

[Edited 7/30/15 17:35pm]

As a piece of music it definitely belongs in the "funk" genre. All of its elements are typical for funk music and it's not even a "hybrid" track of several genres, as Prince's stuff often is. Not liking something, or not "liking it enough", does not mean a piece of music would not belong in a certain genre of music. I see similar arguments being brought up all the time in "smaller" genres like jazz, metal etc. and it's just silly to me. There are better ways to express your disappointment in things than to insist that they're not what most people perceive them to be.

I'll comment on something else here too, because the phrase "on the one" is often understood in a way that does not further anyone's understanding or appreciation of funk music. It's not necessarily something that you guys are arguing for in your posts, but it's implied there, nevertheless.

As you probably know, funk "hitting on the one" refers to an emphasis of the first beat of a bar (or a segment of several bars). It's an effective way to do funk stuff, but it's really just one way to do it. There are funk tracks that have an emphasis on the one and there are funk tracks that do not. It's certainly no prerequisite for something to qualify as "funk", if that's what people usually mean when they bring up that phrase and try to justify their views on funk with it. Not even Parliament / Funkadelic had it defining their music until the mid-70s.

If funk music was as limited as some people on the Internet seem to want it to be I probably wouldn't be a fan of it.

Well then...PLEASE tell me how pork has ANYthing to do with what's going on in this song. What does it have ANYTHING to do with the themes of starfish and coff3...he clearly wants to KISS a Girl or vice versa...and she's CLEARLY a sexy dancer. Is Prince the third in line from the bathroom at the club or third in line at the bar. Is he taking a stand against Muslims...is he bout to have a threesome with Kevin and Lucy.....TELL ME what in this song has ANYTHING to do with ham.

Other than the bit where he rhymes Jam with ham... like in the song "Starfish and Coffee"? Nothing, which judging from the long ranty paragraph with all the caps above, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear.

You like making kids cry brah?

Or I pray ure acting a fool for attention.

Caught me. Hug?

It's a clunky line. The last time he made the Jam/Ham rhyme was back on "Starfish". I then framed it as a misheard lyric.

Read an article on Spacedaily about quantumnetworks... I really had a hard time understanding all the things described there, but it stll made a lot more sense to me than al of the above.
