btw, Prince needs a new photoshop artist, unless he likes his promo images to look like a middle schooler photoshopped them.

How many times do I have to say this.....Prince is a veteran artist.Radio does not embrace new music from older, veteran artists.Bruno Mars,on the other hand,is a young "hot" artist.Anything he releases will get massive airplay and become a hit.

Are we clear on this? rolleyes lol

Agreed....it is the game as it is played.

I remember when Michael Jackson and "Thriller" were on top of the world. Time magazine did a cover story on it.

Towards the end of the article they mentioned that a lot of teens were already moving on to The Next New Thing - an androgynous musician with a movie coming out. Guy by the name of Prince.

You're right about that game.

The day people stop "dissecting it to death" is the day he should really start worrying, because that's when people stop caring about his music. Come on baby, whole lotta disssecting going on!

OK, they're not throwaways. But "greatest"? "Ever recorded"?

These are the very first slow jams where Prince becomes a caricature of himself.
There must be qualities in them, but to my ears it's Prince at his most corny.
In the same league of "The One", "The Love We Make", useless songs,
rehashes of stuff already done. Good craftsmanship, but it's Prince, so what's new.

How can you release something as delicate and haunting as "Condition Of The Heart",
and then yodel "Cruuuuu-ciaaaal" over music obviously intended for elevators?

The production is torture to my ears, and they're simply not great compositions.
They sound like they've been written in five stars hotel suite, they exsude duty-free Dom Pérignon,
they're definitive kitsch statements.
They may be kinda catchy for a couple of minutes, but they don't stick.
Poor Eric, poor Atlanta, forced to play this empty, childish riff.

The kind of songs that makes it too easy for Jamie Foxx to mock Prince.

OK then, because my verve is starting to sound a bit gratuitous. biggrin

In the grand scheme, I don't know why, these ballads don't do it for me.
I don't understand, I love the era and everything about it.
It's like... "In A Large Room With No Light".
Sometimes I found it brilliant, joyful, awesome.
Most of the time, I found it to be pretentious.
Fantastic on the surface, not much substance (or at least I don't feel it).
I'm not discussing the inventivity, it's definitely a fresh take on pop,
it's a crazy little masterpiece of its own.

There's a thin line between songs ready to be shared and published on record,
and songs that are more like work and ground for songs yet to come.
These ballads, I'm not surprised they didn't make it, WB execs aside.
They lack the ingredient that makes them somewhat "universal".

I understand that songs like these have to be considered with all The Work in mind,
but that's precisely why I find these two (oh, "Power Fantastic" as well) falling into the "You have to be a Prince fan to dig it" category.
It's just not the category I prefer.

It's one of Prince's most gorgeous songs ever. So fantastic. The kind of song only Prince at his height could create. An actual MASTERPIECE for once. Too bad it's on a BOOTLEG so you'll never hear it, right?

It doesn't matter--Prince doesn't want you to hear it, so don't worry about it. lol

I don't know, I gues you'd call it a ballad. It's slow-ish, lots of little horns. A guitar solo at the end. Think All The Midnights in the World, just more staccato in delivery. Kind of.

Stare is a dud.... Prince knows this isn't going to be played anywhere radio, TV, clubs etc. if he doesn't he needs some new friends to tell him the truth. For those including Prince hollering Funk all the time in my Lisa Coleman voice "I'm here to tell you this anit it". You can't dance to it, snap your finger to it, I wouldn't run out and buy let alone down load it free. Samples of old tunes Skippy you have done this already really. Hell just release the remastered collection already. U know U r wrong for releasing these half ass tracks. Younger Prince would never have released half of these songs in the last decade. Prince show is usually great but its filled with guess what old hits! Prince can't act like because he's older doesn't cuz on stage or because he's older he's not sexually suggestive. Hit wrote plenty of hit hits for The Time, Vanity 6, The Family with out cussing or over sexualized. Guess what it was Funky, Fun and Everybody Loved it so. My question is what's really going on???

The more I listen to this track, the more I'm finding it ho-hum. I really hope this isn't the album version. It's not the bass or the groove - that's funky. It's not the lyrics or the vocals - they're cool. It's not the horns - they're great too. It's the boring arrangement. The song has well and truly run out of steam by 2:30. It does an annoying fade-out-fade-in thing, then finishes with a minute or so of not much happening. There are some great examples of Prince jams like this with longish instrumental outros. But this one is tame. He needs to do something more at the end rather than just loop the groove and add some horn stabs. Something else either needs to happen, or it needs to finish at the original fade-out point. I get the suspicion this isn't the album version, but still a 'teaser'...

Totally agree with this. I enjoy the first 2 minutes - love the bass and its good to have horns on record and even the Kiss sample has grown on me but the last minute or so just goes nowhere. Similar songs like Musicology, Sticky Like Glue etc have nice little funky instrumental outros compared to this.

.

I hope you're right about this being 'a teaser' and the album version (if there is an album!) being different but going by recent history we're likely to get the same edit. We also hoped Hardrocklover would be different or longer than the SoundCloud version.

Yeah, but the "Hardrocklover" ending works well in that it leaves us hanging for more. That's a positive. But the ending of "Stare" seems like wasted space.

And the middle bit. Actually, the song peaks at the very beginning and loses steam from there onwards. Nice bass intro, great when the drums kick in. And then off we roll in a downward spiral. It sets itself up to be something dirty, funky and minimal but ends up being polished and synthetic with the minmal, nasty groove buried beneith utter blandness. What a waste of a great bassline.

I'm picturing a video of Prince disguised as a street musician, with bass in hand, on some busy street. Maybe with a drummer, also famous and in disguise. Maybe Sheila! A crowd starts to gather. Identities are revealed. Bandmembers are added. People stare.

Musically Condition of the Heart is a Masterpiece as well as Power Fantastic... Vocally Crucial is one of his most sensual songs... Adonis & Bathseba is just genius... However overall as a whole ADORE is the one... Some of the most amazing lyrics on that song.
