I like it, but I havve to issues.

1. As with HARDROCKLOVER, the end os rather unsatisfying. I hope the album version is longer.
2. As with The Breakdown, this is mastered horrensously. Maybe it'll be a similar case where the quality will be improved on the album.

Either way, I think I'm going to like this one.

The album version sounds just as bad as the initial download version. Stare sounds way better

B. You want to stop all this Bart bashing? It's easy! Just post 5 songs that Prince has released in the last 5 years that you think are great. Or however many you're comfortable with.

Bart, the thing is this - you've been posting negative stuff about Prince for what seems like two decades. And yet you're still here. And still following Prince. Which makes absolutely no sense at all.

So either you're completely obsessed with bringing down Prince, or (hopefully) there ARE some good tracks he's released this decade. Tracks that are good enough to keep you interested but for some reason you refuse to acknowledge.

So acknowledge (relatively) recent stuff you think is great. Do it here and now. I guarantee you it will put an end to nearly all the negative stuff people post about you. Maybe even all of it.

We have freedom of speech, havent we? Or are you only allowed to come here if you enjoy the Prince of 2010 to 2015?

Bart does make good points, and that is what i come here for! Please don't make every thread an anti Bart rally.

Not sure that someone with 24 posts to their credit is qualified to speak on the body of Bart's posts. No offense, but look at all the other replies to both my post, and to whatever Bart posts on any thread.

This might be the first time I've seen Bart thrown under the bus on a thread before he has actually even made a comment.

.

I don't get it. Instead of intelligently critiquing the song, or even commenting on the Spotify exclusivity, the thread derails immediately against other orgers.

.

I'm still absorbing the song, but at first listen there are a few too many reference to the "past" from someone who claims to not look back. Musically, it's a direct cousin to The Work, Pt. 1 and Prettyman, neither of which are my favorites but I don't dislike them either.

.

Stare is OK, and it seems effortless for Prince. I say that as a bad thing. I don't want effortless. I was effortful (not really a word, but I'm using it). I want to hear a song that took a while to write, and took even longer to flesh out in the studio.

.

I'm intrigued by the use of Spotify and what that might mean for the future, but as a graphic designer I'm also intrigued by the over-use of Photoshop on the artwork. Maybe I am distracted by these things because I'm not entranced by the song itself?

I'm really liking this song but if I must find a fault with it (and I must) I'd say it's too short. I hope that there are longer versions of this and HARDROCKLOVER on the album.

STARE lyrics

[Intro]
Oh baby

[Verse 1]
First things first, we'd like you to STARE
We used to go on stage in our underwear
We changed up, we got a brand new beat
Now we got this song poppin' in the street
They all STARE, can I help you?
Everybody jam cause this party's goin' ham
Just STARE, can I help you?
Ain't nobody stoppin' cause we got this party poppin' now

[Verse 2]
Second things first, we know you got thirst
But we like it when you're fiending for the funk until it hurts
Jump: air! can you blame me?
Every time you whip it to the beat, it make a brother just STARE
Sister freak me
Nobody got a chance
You need to back up, let me show you how to dance
STARE, can I get a kiss?

[Chorus]
I pull out a tune
Curvy ma, tell me what you wanna do
Do you wanna
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Do you wanna
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Sexy dancer
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Sexy dancer
Do you wanna
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh

[Bridge]
You don't wanna mistake it
Cause you know we couldn't take it
But we like it when you shake it
Baby careful not to break it
Don't break it now

[Chorus]
Do you wanna
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh
Uh-uh-uh-uh-ahh-ahh

[Verse 3]
Last things last
I need your number fast
I'd rather let the music talk
While you and me walk into the past
Into the past
Into the

Prince to me is referencing when he used to dance in underwear on stage on the Dirty Mind era (and later he would actually wear no underwear on the Purple Rain Tour ('does your man have an ass like mine?') but he's sick of all these people just STARING TAKING CELL PHONE FOOTAGE, he'd rather his fans be dancing or 'fiending for the funk until it hurts... You need to back up and let me show you how to dance'... instead of STARE...'we like it when you shake it...don't break it' meaning keep on dancing, right? When he saus 'I'd rather let the music talk while you and me walk into the past' I think he means WHEN HIS FANS USED TO DANCE INSTEAD OF STARE TAKING CELL PHONE FOOTAGE.

I LOVE THE PRODUCTION ON THIS SONG! The song is overwhelming so most people (including me!) are not going to be able to digest it on the first 10 listens. There's just so much going on!!!! On that note, it doesn't grab me as quick as HARDROCKLOVR, but it's still stupendous

Back on topic now.

Referring to someone else as an "unsuccessful musician" is a personal attack and uncalled for.

Not if it is true. I often think that with the amount of bitching that goes on that many people are just Trools, no fans who do not have a life or musicians who are just jealous. I am not even going to go into the number of guys commenting on how old he looks or how much photoshopped has been used on pictures (wtf)

Since you have basically written the same review for almost two decades now, I'm not sure why some people give you some credibility as an ass-essor of his music.

Wouldn't you expect an intelligent observer to at least develop some nuance? More importantly, wouldn't you expect a perenially disappointed person to move on rather than stay on a site to lecture people that dare enjoy what your self-conceived superior judgement rules on and on.

I cordially invite you to start a thread called Why I Still Follow Prince.

You are distracted because you have no life😏 You also realize that the retouching of photos occurs in almost all marketing materials in the entertainment field. Not sure why Prince would be different and why so much worry about it on this board.

I don't mind what he was trying to do here at all. I just think the horn lines serve no purpose to the song since the melody is kind of weak - it overpowers. If it was an instrumental I'd like it more.
I wish he had a better (maening paying attention) arranger for horns, I liked Leeds a lot for that or imagine a Trombone Shorty vibe.
I hear a lot of potential in what he has done recently but he really has a hard time breaking outside his box. Its a huge box, but a box. One of the tihngs that helps is having someone with enough of a track record and the balls (or uterus) to tell him when something is meh and not feel like they are at risk of being fired/let go. Ot he puts away all his tools and favorite instruments and makes a record with none of those crutches. I'm sure this stuff sounds badass on huge speakers in a studio but it acheives being a nice side dish of little treats, not a meal. Does feel like he's making an effort.

Just my opinion.

AGREE ON THE HORNS! Who is Prince's horns on this track?? Very underwhelming, almost subtracts rather than adds funk to the bassline.

I'm sold on this one. A lot of fun! And a much more warm feel than AOA that came off tinny and thin to me. I'm not expecting the next Grand Progression - just something to enjoy. This fits the bill.

Okay, here's my thoughts...

I've listened to the song and I think it's ok. The best parts for me were indeed the musical references of his songs past. Lyrically, I think it's same cookie cutter phonics he's been hooked on lately and musically - to me - it's Prince "funk by numbers" and he stayed within the lines. shrug

That's nice but speaking for myself as a TRUE FUNK SOLDIER! I say without a doubt that - FUNK - IT AIN'T! I am personally 'fiending for the FUNK' so bad that when I see people claiming and clamoring about his latest droppings being funk, it hurts when I listen and KNOW instantly that it ain't because FUNK hits ON THE ONE! wink headbang It does not require 10+ listens to try to digest. hammer

This is so weird, why is he now releasing new music on Spotify when he just took all his music off there and appeared to move to Tidal. I'm not complaining per se as I have a Spotify account so it's obviously better for me than if he did put the song exclusively on Tidal, but it seems to be completely at odds with his recent actions. Regardless, looking forward to checking out the song, do we think this is going to be on the new album?

It's what Prince does, basically saying "I can do what the f**k what I want".

It's a dull track though. The best bit in it is the Kiss sample, and we all heard that first nearly 30 years ago.

I like the overall vibe of Stare. It reminds me of old school Prince. And not necessarily because of the nods to kiss and sexy dancer. Also, the bass reminds me of Let's Work. And it smokes !
