I find this one a bit average. I like the bassline (although it reminds me too much of Seinfeld) and the vocals are ok. I find the references to Kiss and Sexy Dancer a bit corny, and the horns are a bit intrusive... I'm not sure they add to the song. Will listen a few more times, but I put it in the same box as Da Bourgeoisie... (In fact it's a mixture between Da Bourgeoisie, We Gets Up and Feel better, feel good feel wonderful...)

I was going to make this a stand alone comment but when I read your post, it rather solidified where I was intending to go with this. So I just want you to know that what I'm about to say is not actually directed towards you. Please don't take it personally, if I offend. hug

Okay, here's my thoughts...

I've listened to the song and I think it's ok. The best parts for me were indeed the musical references of his songs past. Lyrically, I think it's same cookie cutter phonics he's been hooked on lately and musically - to me - it's Prince "funk by numbers" and he stayed within the lines. shrug

That's nice but speaking for myself as a TRUE FUNK SOLDIER! I say without a doubt that - FUNK - IT AIN'T! I am personally 'fiending for the FUNK' so bad that when I see people claiming and clamoring about his latest droppings being funk, it hurts when I listen and KNOW instantly that it ain't because FUNK hits ON THE ONE! wink headbang It does not require 10+ listens to try to digest. hammer

This ain't a funk song Hatrina!

We're in complete agreement right there! nod

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I like it alot. Great bass, good horns, but the vocals are a bit dry.
overall good funk tune. I like the direction he is going in

I'll go 7 / 10

Nice funky, laid back bass. Good arrangement. Pretty cool vocal delivery.

But the lyrics to that first verse?! Cringe! "poppin in the street" -- I doubt it. That would be Drake, Taylor, Beyonce, The Weekend, Nikki, and all the rest of the young folk.

And the horns are just ok.

Songs alright. I'm bored of it. There's only so many 1+1+1=3/feelgoodfeel/good standards I can take. The first was Housequake....and I'll keep it.

I like Stare more than HardRockLover. The horns aren't funky enough, though; it's standard horn sounds. Nothing like Girls and Boys from Parade with horns that were really funky(Thank you Eric Leeds)! Not majestic like the horns on Mountains...Prince can do better hornwise.

The basic beat is funky. I do like the samples of Kiss and Sexy Dancer, which both still get play on local radio. Maybe he's been checking the Soundscan of his old songs, which is why he included them on this song. Or maybe he's just happy that he can sample his Warner Brothers stuff without any legal problems. Who knows?

I need to hear more stuff from the new album(s)...fingers crossed.

I really like it. I know that if I released something like that, I would want to throw a party at Paisley Park on Saturday night and jam for an hour or two! cool

In fact, I would "take a walk into the past" and just charge $7 to get in...like the "good ole days"...that way I could afford to bring my daughter and quite a few of her friends who have been developing an interest in Prince's music!

Agreed. I have HRL on high rotation on my playlist and I just don't love it. It's ok IMO. This song I like better. It's got some swing and swagger to it. Lyrics not great but not cringe worthy either. I really like it... I broke out the Bose Bluetooth and that bass and those horns are slammin'

Agree... It's not bad, but it's not great at all.. Very average... Bored of this song already.

Hardrocklover is much much superior.

I'm late on this, but--it's enjoyable. Not fantastic, but a fun song.

I somehow got distracted and in between my first couple of listens and then several more, I listened to the Back In Time album for what was really the first time (well, I'd listened to it while mowing the lawn, so I never really heard it well before)--actually for three times in a row. Its fun bits were just as fun, so...

.

I'm pleased with this, just not overjoyed.

Fun song, unusual start, then funky kinda by the numbers, but it gets better. I like the little bit of experimenting but felt they could've pushed it a little further. I like the bass & horns & overall sound, the samping was cool too. Can't wait for the album, hope it'll be another 2 album set of some sort.

I disagree with the "funk by numbers". That bass-line is not as immediately catchy as it could have been. He's deliberately gone for something more. The same with the horns. It would have been so easy to throw in an instantly catchy funk standard riff, but he takes a more complicated path. Which I think is to his credit.

Other than the clunky line about everybody needing to "jam cuz this party's got a ham"? I assume this is a vague reference to "Starfish". It's hard not to like that bass though. If the lyrics had some substance to them rather than just Prince being a diva it would have been a keeper. The comedy lyrics give it a limited shelf life.

He says.. "the party's going H.A.M." Going H.A.M." means "Hard As a Muthaf***ker"

"While we walk into the past"
What happened to the "now"? The dirty lyrics, these samples in these songs, and in the end he metions the past... doesn't sound like a Jehovah Witness.

Maybe this is a good thing! Since he's doing throwbacks in songs now (you never know, there could be more like this). Maybe we'll see a remaster soon? Doesn't have to be for just one album/era, how about a box-set for like the first five albums?
If any album, I hope he remasters "Sign 'O' The Times" the most! (For obvious reasons.)

Love it.

As with Hardrocklover I'm not going to listen much until the album comes out in case it's on there.

I love AOA but that new album thrill was slightly dulled by having heard so much of it before the release.

Pretty much sums it up. Nothing new or special with its throwaway party lyrics but its ok. Love the bass, good to have some horns on record.

.

I thought the Kiss sample was a bit cheesy but after a few listens its grown on me.
