In my opinion, the only reason Prince came out complaining about Warner Brothers not answering his calls and about how long it takes for a record company to release new material, is so when it flops commercially he has someone to blame. TRUE BLUE

To have manage to stay revelant in a very fickled muziq business 4 over 35 years is unheard of. has remained royalty among any label! He can sign ANYWHERE he chooses to. He is not a HAS BEEN! Like most here paint him. He is still considered a SUPERSTAR! Especially now since Mj is gone.
Of coursE his Father a musical genius himself is smiling down on him. Also his inherited beautiful Mother is also. His childhood brother/buddy Andre(who Eye recently saw live) is still very proud of him... Warners wouldn't have begged him back if no one cared about him anymore. U can BELIEVE THAT! They gave him back his MASTERS! Prince has ALWAYS called the shots. That is why he is so hated on! Even on his own fan made fansite Princehate.org. . . I find it hard to believe WB begged him to come back, Prince needed them more than they needed him, his album sales for the past 20 years without them has been no where near as good. His vast majority of album sales over this time have been albums that were signed to Warner. They held the cards because he wants his masters. Even after the 35 years for each one, there was no gaurentee he would get them back easily. He's not an artist who is going to make them alot of money now, the remasters wont even make them that much but it was better to have him on board for them than not. . WB would be better fronting an extensive world or something if they both want to make real money. Look at Bon Jovi last year over $200 million highest grossing, Springsteen $150 mil. There are now three albums being talked about: plectrum electrum, purple rain reissue and whatever Jon heard! Lol... My gut instinct is that we'll be very lucky if we hear one before 2015. As for the relationship with Warners...it's like the Wall of Berlin.

I bet P submitted something to them, and they replied "not up to the standard we feel we require to make this a success" and started putting forward their demands. Perhaps including some test tracks to see what would happen.Like "Breakfast Can Wait".
Notice how 3EG just disappeared at one point in 2013 and it was NPG or funky/pop Prince all of a sudden. Then early this year 3EG suddenly become the focus again and there's a "soon" for their record plus a front page in Mojo -- and then nothing happens because no label took the bait. Or if they did they balked at Prince's monetairy demands.
They need to sell a truckload of albums to get any ROI on the undoubtedly bloated advance Prince would demand. Oh, and let's not forget chances are he'll do ZILCH to promote anything. © Bart Van Hemelen

Not relevant: ages ago.
One single isn't an album.
We know for a fact that Arista paid him. Plus: all of those are from years ago. His MO in recent years is clear: P wants a truckload of money in advance, and then its up to the label (or the store, remember the Target deal) to shift product and give him a hit. That's what he was bitching about re iTunes: they wouldn't pay him an advance for his record. © Bart Van Hemelen

Okay, I've resisted posting on this long enough... This was not even CLOSE to a preview of an album. I've never seen such an empty album review. No, it's not mysterious, just vaporware. Yet, we now have SEVEN pages of discussion over nothing. That's all, folks! ~G "He's a musician's musician..."

if the music was great WB would not be hiding from him like he was a door to door salesman or a Jehovah's witness at the front door. His last few tracks including Falling in Love Tonight have been abominations, so I am going to side with the poor folks at WB on this. Instead of rushing to release his newest scribbles as quickly as possible, and hoping WB pinned them to their fridge and patted him on the head, maybe he could spend some time really listening to his new music and being a little more discerning.

Have to agree. Can only remember 3 songs and the Rita Ora track.
The article seemed...not ready. Perhaps he was too tired after Bruno Mars but just seems so uninformative.

the blaming won't start until after the following: * first single is released * there's no video * prince doesn't promote the song, or * prince goes on tv shows and plays a different song * the album is released * prince releases a 3rdEyeGirl track on another label 2 days later * press reports that prince is now working with a new starlet * warners is like 'ok, so this album is over, let's concentrate on the PR remaster for november' * prince starts sulking * release of a video for the 1st single from the solo album, 4 months after is failed to chart * prince talks to the press how warners didn't promote his album enough * warners is up and ready for the PR 30 campagne but prince has moved on and is touring with the NPG, releasing the brand new single "Big City" on 3rdEyeGirl.com . something like that. THEN the blame game will begin full throttle

I am tired of the teasing. 3 projects due out and one that has been waved in front of us for almost 2 years now.
@Drfunkenberry on Twitter:
That Jon Bream article seems incomplete. 3 songs and a remix but says it is an entire album? Right.
Here is hoping that WB execs and Prince have been in contact since Bream article. That was frustrating to read...
Personally, I think the new Prince CD should be released the same day as the "Purple Rain" remaster special edition.....
As for PLECTRUMELECTRUM, that should be released as vinyl with a digital download code only.
too much time has passed. Make PLECTRUMELECTRUM rare, special, and unique.
This conversation comes from frustration. I want new Prince product in my hands. Remasters and new material.
They can blame each other til Kingdom Come but the fact of the matter is 2009 is too long for a proper release.
Also, I like remixes. I like what Josh did with "Breakfast Can Wait".
Now those laser sounds in the "BREAKDOWN"? Yea, that I have a problem with. Yet U guys complain bout mixes.
>>
I like Funks honesty. No yes man mentality and have seen that more when it comes to talking about the purple dude on the spreecast and twitter account.
Even about Plectrum and it should be on vinyl, for the 4 of us who still care about it!
Perhaps Warners released "The Breakdown" without hearing it and after putting it on iTunes wondered what those laser sounds were as well.

He was just on the radio talking about it. He only got to listen to four tracks. He says they're clearly one-man band efforts. He didn't sound enthusiastic about them at all. He described the 2nd track as 'complex' again and that it baffled him, going on to say that Prince aficionados would know it was him straight away, but others might not, which sounds promising. Here's hoping the album is in that vein (which sounds experimental) and isn't just a run of the mill stab at the charts. It doesn't sound good though so far. Hundalasiliah!

If this album was any good, Bream would have been singing its praises.Prince is just a bitter has-been playing games with no goods to back it up anymore-goods not good enough to even get released- forget about any sales figures! Its over, folks. Bring on the remasters. Bottom line: Plectrum Electrum isn't released because its not good. WB isnt interested in the new album, because it isn't good either. Its so sad:
Prince thinking he can summon a music critic & have him sit for an hour late at night for the "honor" of listening to his latest meandering. Not even the decency to engage him face-to-face. Karma is hitting Prince: sitting in the dark late at night in a studio his past paid for, wearing high heels and an massive, unflattering afro, wondering why no one wants to put out his electronic music while everyone else is grooving to the sold out Bruno Mars show down the road. Bring on the remasters. When he still sort of lived in reality! This. Bream article is the ugly truth of a has been. But that's OK. The remasters are coming. [Edited 6/24/14 16:57pm]

i'm just baffled that he even wants a major label to release his new material at this point. he tried it so many times in the past and it never got him the millions in cash that he was hoping for, or the chart success. when he did have chart success it was through gimmicks, which he could've employed just as easily as a free agent. / the main problem i can see now with warners is that once again there is a lot of material 'ready' and it can't all be released at once. / warners' main interest is, no question about it, remastering/re-releasing the back catalogue. / i sincerely doubt it was a demand from warners that he release a new album this year, in order for them to give him his masters back. what's the point? / if he'd just got that deal with them and said 'look, i'm going to stick to what i set out for in 94, i'm still going to release what i want when i want and you can do with the remasters as you please as long as i get my masters back' he could now be releasing 4 albums for all they cared. / it's not like his internet releases or target store deals will hinder the sales of the PR remaster. especially if it is a decent package with lots of content. he will only sell his new album to the hardcore base anyway, and they won't skip on a decent remaster package because they bought PlectrumElectrum and a solo prince record months before. / the general public? they will be none the wiser. those who pick up on it will be few anyway. it's not like a 4 million more people will be jumping at the bit to buy the new prince album simply because warners releases it. unless it is backed with mamoth promotion, huge radio play, tv appearances and a world tour. and even then, it's doubtful. / so is it prince who wanted to release a new album on warners this year? if so: why? for the advance? but do they give anyone 5 mil simply to hand in an album? surely there is such a thing as ROI for promo and all that. so he might sell more units, but promotion and whatever will cost more. then the net result is arbitrary, no? meanwhile, his money is in touring anyway. plus getting back ownership of his masters will probably make him lots of money in the future. therefore, the most important thing to him right now would be making sure the whole masters/rereleases, reverting back of publishing etc etc is handled with a great deal of care and thought. / there was nothing to stop him from releasing "welcome 2 america", the the supposed in the works NPG album (including Big City) and then the solo stuff he had knocking about. he could have put all of that onto his website. instead a lot of it will end up in the vault. / so that begs the question: is it better to record, talk about and selectly preview material all the time and then stick it in the vault never to be seen of or heard again, or simply release it to your core fanbase who will be glad to pick all of it up - thus making you a bit of money and be on top of your goodwill. / it might come across as very cinical but my personal conclusion is that prince doens't care about what his fans want unless he can make lots of millions off each album. releasing an album and earning just 1 mil from it doesn't seem enough. he'd rather just file it away and forget it ever existed. / what is still planned for release now can only serve to convolute all his dealings with warners regarding the remasters. / at this point though, we can only hope that there will be any remaster after the PR one because things don't look all to great even now, two months in.

Maybe P is messing with us. My fantasy is that Josh played some terrible reject songs that arent going to be on the album so when the review came out we would all bitch. But truly P is about to release a masterpiece and blow our minds. You think im crazy now but wait until the album is on repeat in your car when it comes out. P is probably laughing at us and all of our negativity and shaking his head at the supposed fans who have turned negative on him. [Edited 6/24/14 17:14pm] This Could Be Us But U Be Playin...

I read that as "this song opens with a Linn-Drum programmed to hell and back with dry snare and syncopation". But what about "The Gold Standard"? Based on the title alone, I suspect it's partly about colonialism and world economies and partly about how great he is and how there will never be another like Prince. One part of me is like "Aw Yeah, Prince is FINALLY going to shut down these haters by singing about how great he was... again", but then another part of me is all, "Yay, Prince is FINALLY going to sing about history and banks and shit I don't care about... again".

. correct me if i'm wrong, but most of the people here who 'bitch' or 'turn negative' have been here for a decade or more. and we've been fans of prince's music, buying every release he put out there for much, much longer than that. . so why is it that people call us, 'supposed fans', or keep saying we should just pack our shit and not let the door hit us on the way out? is it because they think that prince thinks of us that way? well he's never said it directly, but who knows. but when all truth is told, we can honestly say that we stuck by him all these years through all of his crazy shit. we still bought his music and we still went to see his shows. no artist can realisticly expect any more from his fans than that. we don't have to blow smoke up his ass, he's got a new girlfriend every year or so to do just that. . i can honestly say that i've bought and paid for every thing prince officially released in his carreer [except "planet earth" which i got given by someone]. that includes all his websites and the stuff he scattered about left and right. . it also includes all the stuff from last year's 3rdEyeGirl site, those kinda horrible remixes of Dance 4 Me and more on itunes and the latest release "the breakdown". . lastly, i still enjoy his music that's right, prince. you might make me physically sick at times with your constant mindgames and warped ramblings, but i still like your music and i'll still be in line to sign up for more in the future. . i know that buying all of someone's work and supporting them by going to see them live (and enjoying it) doesn't give anyone the right to tell someone what to do or force expectations upon them. however, voicing an opinion and being negative about things you don't like is just as much a part of being a 'fan' as the rest of it. at least it is for anyone beyond 12 years old. . it's human to want to voice your opinion on something, and if you can form one based on the catalogue in relation to the new work, and reason about it. then why not? i'm more scared by people on this site or on prince's own sites in the past, who never say one negative word. that's idolatry, something prince would be the 1st to yell doesn't sit well with his god. . prince and some of his fans are pretty world weary, at least it seems that way to me. prince gets away with so much shit, on the basis of who he was. and yet he and these fanatics still believe that everything he does should go unquestioned. in this day and age? who else is above reproach right now? that's right, no one. . his different flavorings, i'll keep going there. until he starts to charge me too much, or mix the flour with sawdust. then i'll either voice my concern, or quietly search out another baker. . just sees dwindling sales and -perhaps justly- wonders why. so he blames the recording industry, radio, whatever. but a large chunk of what is happening to his career is happening to all artists. some of it is also based on his change in style, his lesser compositions (which is also very reasonable, since no one can keep pumping out stellar material as long as he has anyway). . in the few instances where he does actually hear complaints (about his failed websites, for one) he seems to become kind of pissed off (F.U.N.K [brilliant song by the way]) or he just pushes someone else under the buss and then continues on until the next 'crisis'. . but the big reveal is that there IS no crisis. this is happening all over the place. it's a (haha) sign of the times. . in a world where people get death threats over changing the lettering on a can of soda, prince is still doing very well and his fans are, though a grumpy old lot, still quite alright if you ask me. we've been fed on a diet of 'weird and unconventional' since our youth and, seemingly unlike prince, we're for the most part still pretty resilient and accepting of change. what is being called our bitterness and nastyness or rudeness is just discussion. the nature of the discussion is that there will always be those who stand outside of it and don't even want the discussion and will perceive one end of the spectrum to be of negative origin. which is not strictly true. . when you put them on a scale, i think our 'negativity' is by far outweighed by prince's own negativity and disgruntled ramblings about everything from fans (trading bootlegs, complaining about his defunct/troubled websites, asking for more music, gasp) to record companies, to the music industry, to radio, to television, to basically everything outside the prince bubble, i think anyone with half a mind will find that prince is the negative one in all of this. . as i said, i'll still be here in 10 years time and god willing prince will be too. but i wonder if he realises that if he messes up this whole remasters project, he will lose most of what is left of the ever dwindling fanbase. . i don't think he cares either way. it's become pathological at this stage. it's a cyclical pattern, repeating over and over with ever such slight variations. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
