I think he is playing games with us..didnt someone say that he previewed the album in April and the crowd was very pleased...but all the sudden Breams or whatever his name is has a tone that the songs arent too special. Something is goin on...This album WILL BE a masterpiece. P has something up his sleeve. Also, knowing that the review Breams did was not very pleasing, it is posted on 3rdeyegirls twitter. This might be to make us percieve it isnt a great album. But when he releases it he will positively shock us fans and maybe even the mainstream.

From the looks of things, Prince will be dusting off prince any day now.

That thought crossed my mind. Is it a mistake to dance with WB? I've not had a good feeling about this. He has his own studios he could put stuff out there?

My take of the whole thing is that Prince, like any artist, feels terribly nervous when he is about to release his album. Maybe that makes him insecure about the institutions, i.e. record company, reviewers etc.

So he surrounds himself with people he trusts because they know his creative processes.

I wonder if it would help him if he kept focusing his mind on the people he sees right in front of him while he's performing.

I, for one, love every single waveform he produces. Good or bad - it's always inspiring.

Prince is not a man. He's an adventure.

Now serve it up already! Because I still don't have the slightest clue what to expect.

Read: young, pliable people which are unlikely to oppose him.

He has been there dozens of times.

Nervousness should not be an issue at this stage in his life.

In all of his business dealings he fails to show that there's a plan withn some reasonable goals, reasonable assumptions, etc.

.

This PR 30 year thing did not suddenly fall from the sky.

It must have been brewing for a while as WB does plan ahead a bit.

So the whole London thing for PE was unneeded and simply wrong from the business Public Relations standpoint.

Even now, now that we have a vague story about the PR remaster (no date, etc), we see him float a few songs without firm commitment about planning, release channels, etc.

.

In short:

What is going to become of PE?

When will the PR remaster hit?

How serious is this new ablum thing?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

You seriously believe, based on the last few albums, that Prince is playing average songs to his longest standing press associate, whilst he has a masterpiece up his sleeve???

Don't remember him playing these games when he walked in carrying Around the world in a day and a single red rose, played it to WB and walked out. Weeks later, it was on the shelves.

Play On cool

I wonder what Jon Bream is thinking in this. He goes way back.

The thing is also that responses from people who come in can influence the outcome in any direction (even back and locked into the vault).

The $ question also shows that in the end money has to be made just like a carpenter uses his specific skills to get bread and butter.

whatever, I just don't think the clicks translate directly to sales, especially when a great part of the fans are older than Jesus. also remember, the internet is dead

I think Prince is genuinely frustrated with the record companies and the industry in general, so there's nothing new there.

-

The delivery and consumption of music may have changed, but the corrupt nature of the industry hasn't. Itunes still takes a massive slice of the cake and do virtually nothing but provide a store to sell your wares. They still act like gatekeepers, if you're not on itunes, amazon, etc do you still reach the widest market? The major labels are wedded to the likes of itunes, so that's where the power lies and dictates what we hear. Look at the recent terms youtube has imposed on indie artists and labels.

-

The Warners deal is probably related to back catalogue re-issues, as it's a guaranteed sale. In the same way we can get nostalgic hearing 'the hits' on tour, we would all put down cash to hear a remaster with a little extra added. We are essentially buying what we already have though.

-

Prince touting music 'he's never going to release', well isn't that partly promotion? Prince talked about The Gold Experience never being released, he also said that Dreamer was too intense (or words to that effect) for us to hear, and yet they both came out.

-

It is frustrating that we see album art for Plectrum Electrum and even test pressings, but still no album...but I think it will come. Along with the solo album hopefully as a physical disc, not a digital copy.

-

In the meantime, if he keeps playing live, I am very happy!

I bet P submitted something to them, and they replied "not up to the standard we feel we require to make this a success" and started putting forward their demands. Perhaps including some test tracks to see what would happen.Like "Breakfast Can Wait".

Notice how 3EG just disappeared at one point in 2013 and it was NPG or funky/pop Prince all of a sudden. Then early this year 3EG suddenly become the focus again and there's a "soon" for their record plus a front page in Mojo -- and then nothing happens because no label took the bait. Or if they did they balked at Prince's monetairy demands.

Purple Music would have. I can name 50 indie labels who'd see a significant improvement in their yearly income by distributing a prince album or side project because those labels r struggling on a daily basis and open a bottle of champagne whenever they sell 50,000 copies of an album, which doesn't happen to them so often.

They need to sell a truckload of albums to get any ROI on the undoubtedly bloated advance Prince would demand. Oh, and let's not forget chances are he'll do ZILCH to promote anything.

Better yet Bart, he probably gave then edited out songs and reloaded versions with all the sexiness taken out..

Thanks for sharing this. My perspective on the new music is definitely changed by listening to Jon Bream expand on his written remarks. Like many here have already noted, it really did seem like he was damning with faint praise in his StarTrib piece.

.

However, Jon clarifies in this spoken interview that he consciously didn't want to express a strong opinion either way based on such minimal exposure. As an example he even references the historic First Avenue show where the Purple Rain songs were publicly unveiled and the lack of audience response they received simply due to unfamiliarity.

.

When asked point blank by the interviewer whether the new songs are good, Jon allows that they are (even if track 2 is too complex to digest immediately) and adds that they certainly made him want to hear more. That last bit is the most important and positive thing to me. Rather than a misstep, the album seems a bit more like a conscious sidestep. I love that kind of Prince music so I'm happy this morning. Now, if it only ever sees the light of day...
