I thought he already had a solo album that was suppose to come out with the 3rd Eye Girl album? Is this now a 3-CD album? I hope he justs puts it on his website, I don't like buying my music from third party foks, it's like food, best to go from farm to plate, and from musician to listener.

Can we agree once and for all that his name is Prince now (again)? He has not been prince since 2000.

Sorry but I absolutely refuse to get excited over this.

If I do, and I get this album (hopefully he makes it available on vinyl), and it turns out to be "Planet Earth II" in scope - I will cut someone.

.

I think the fact that Prince seems to be looking for some sort of commercial success again with apprences on New Girl, Arsenio Hall, heavy presence in Europe for gigs so him wanting that probably had a huge bearing on him being with Warner Brothers. How many records has he sold since leaving them? From what I can find on the Internet, since 1991 he has sold 18 million in the US Market, 14 million of that were Warner releases, so 4 Million since then in one of the biggest markets in the world is pretty poor. (This is all i could find)

.

Although he will never sell as much as he did first time round, with their Promotion and Distribution behind him he will be alot more successful than he has been.

.

It just seems the fact he still thinks he should be treated as priority which is going to cause issues between both parties and potentially piss of other artists on the Label if he gets his own way and they have to wait for their Albums to drop.

Yeah well I suggest YOU go look at them lol

Something In The Water @ Manchester: 169,000 views.

Let's Go Crazy @ Manchester: 400,000 views.

That's peanuts. Those are embarrassingly low numbers. Consider that onlya fraction of those would buy anything. Psy's videos have been played billions of times, but he hasn't sold that many, now has he?

I don't think he's tied 2 them when it comes 2 new music

WB ain't gonna let him release anything before their deal is through. They would be insane not to tie him down to some strict terms.

it's not like he's signed a new exclusive or anything.

Hell yes, I bet 100%. WB ain't gonna let that prima donna fuck up their plans by stealing the thunder for the PR reissue to promote some crappy shite. This is their show, and of course Prince is already having buyer's remorse mere months after signing a contract.

They are low numbers buy your forgetting that's only them being posted on 3rd Eye Twitter which itself only has 175k followers, Facebook they have 45k Likes, so the numbers are not too bad considering. The vast majority of Prince's audience will not follow them on Twitter or even have a twitter themselves. There is probabaly even higher numbers of his older fans who might not follow him enough these days to even realise that they are under 3rd Eye Girl on Social media and youtube.

That's not the deal. That's some shite WB have to swallow, and it sounds exactly like the kind of dumb brainfart Prince thinks is a genius move.

I doubt that means he ain't allowed to release something else elsewhere in the meantime.

I'm 100% sure P isn't allowed to release anything anywhere without their approval at least. WB want the focus on PR Remastered & Expanded, not on "yet another third rate album Prince farted out last week".

I think it more has to do with the fact that he could never find a satisfying configuration.

Far more likely: he shopped the album and nobody gave a fuck.

Psht, nonsense. That FallInLove2Nite crap was on a major tv show and was reported everywhere. People just don't care. So he can't reach the general audience, not his fans. What does that tell you?

No one knows the exact content of the WB deal, but if they had any sense (and I speak as a professional contract negotiator myself) they would have weighed up...

Likely volume of remaster sales

Potential sales of new material

Vs

Legal cost of defending keeping the masters

Loss of income from losing control of masters

That would have led to a deal that would would probably contain....

Controlled return of individual masters upon completion of re-release and agreed sales window for each album.

Agreed amount of promotion/tour.

Limitation of new material around re-master schedule.

Exclusivity under licence period.

Possible lifetime revenue guarantee at reduced percentage, for old or remastered material.

If WB didn't start with this a a minimum, then their contracts management nead firing. I cannot see them simply handing things over on the hope Prince doesn't play up.

Kobalt did. Purple Music would have. I can name 50 indie labels who'd see a significant improvement in their yearly income by distributing a prince album or side project because those labels r struggling on a daily basis and open a bottle of champagne whenever they sell 50,000 copies of an album, which doesn't happen to them so often. Maybe no major would have been interested, sure, but indies: loads of them. Look at Purple Music, a small label releasing house music: prince fed them a rock FM track straight out of the mid 80's (R&RLA), and they took it even though it had nothing to do with what they do. They wouldn't even have considered releasing such a track by a small artist but hell they sure needed the money! I know people working in such small labels, and artists being signed on said labels, and believe me the figures and the money they're toying with have nothing to do with the figures and money majors r toying with, still they do exist and manage to keep in existence. It's like Milk & Honey: Universal finally decided to reject it, OK, in a week's time prince and Tamar could have found a dozen indie labels willing to distribute it but prince decided to shrug instead. It's a pity. If an album had to sell 500,000 copies to be released, 90% of the music I listen to wouldn't even exist.

I think the issues revolve around the fact that Prince was looking for a distribution and marketing deal, rather than a shared ownership.

Sure lots of small labels (and big) would be interested, but once the deal was probably tabled, many walk away. Prince wants upfront payment, without taking on the risk of failure.

Its usually the small labels that fall foul of the dream of making big sales with "big" artists.

At any point, Prince could have set up his own regular label, and released and promoted albums properly. But he never did it. He wanted someone to provide the infrastructure and risk of promotion, whilst retaining artistic control and ownership.

He obviously craves being commercially successful again, but doesn't want to take responsiblity for potential failure. Instead, he keeps blaming "The system".

Worst still, it sounds like he's about to do it all again......

I Think P just needs to take his time. He doesnt need to focus on getting chart toppers because charts are made to get an artist recognized. He has already done the charts all of his career. He doesnt need to worry about what critics or outside people say about the albums and songs thereof. He just needs to focus on staying true to his roots which is being him and being funky. Screw what the masses think. I think it would be a good idea to go back to making songs influenced and inspired by his first 10 albums or his earlier albums. That would be cool to get back the rude boy attitude he used to incorporate into his music. Im all for P..take your time baby. I will wait for you.

True, if he delivers a real masterpiece I will be there. I know what he can do and deliver when he puts his heart into it. I trust his father and mother both smile down on him to help him find his path back to the music which helped him to be where his soul belongs.

Prince releasing a new album.... again.....????? ok......???? but when????

This is getting into the story about "the wolf is coming",

All these messages from Prince about a forthcoming album, these are getting harder and harder to trust.

I believe this when it has happened,

It makes you wonder why not just release it, why all those "rumblings",

It has become a bit irritating, imo..... song of the weak (year)...

prince had worked with several indies so far, for the manufacturing and/or distribution of TMBGITW, 1-800 New Funk, Exodus, Child Of The Sun, U Make My Sun Shine, The Rainbow Children, N.E.W.S. and R&RLA. All were relatively small if not very small labels and I don't think any of them ever paid a cent of advance. Maybe they financed manufacturing of the discs itself and some promo, I'm not even sure. It would be ridiculous from him 2 expect any advance from said labels. 2 b honest I'm not even sure he got any from the majors he worked with after 1996, I think the deal was pretty clear with EMI? BMG/Arista, Universal and Sony: no advance but prince gets full benefit over the sales, that's arguably how he managed 2 make more money with Emancipation than with PR (if, of course, he told the truth about this).
