Magical show! For me one of the best shows Prince ever did!

Y'know...it seems like he took that "jazz festival" thing semi-seriously - doing some of his "jazzier" pieces (When the Lights Go Down, Love Like Jazz) for the first show. And even the stuff that isn't jazz-like was sort of arranged that way. His second show was definitely more rock-flavored.
And, yes - I can't wait to get that, too. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yeah, I prefer the second show. A bit more rock'n'roll. PEACH! God damn this dvd is great.

Super slow. I actually had to just get all the segments rolling and walk away for a couple hours. I was making myself crazy asking repeatedly, "Is it soup yet? Oh. Guess not. "

Having forever had a luke warm attitude towards the audio of these shows, I was not expecting to enjoy the dvd's so much as I have.
Being able to watch both shows in such high quality really is a treat. Show 2 is probably the better of the two imo. Some nice guitar visuals.
Quality release.

just watched the first show. was blown away by the qualitt like everyone else. And watching him perform adds a lot to the performances... THAT empty room solo is one of the best things i've seen him do live.. whoa [Edited 9/23/11 17:58pm]

So its not just me I usualy have good / decent download speed

Now imagine the amazement when he comes up for the second show that night, explains nothing, just as before set number one, and starts a roughly versy similar setlist as if he made some mistakes and needs to have another take of these songs. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Oh yes, the audience was indeed very excited about that *irony OFF* Only Prince would do something like that without explaining a word to his audience
During the second show some people in the audience even started to boo him!!! You can see this on DVD#2. There's a moment when Prince realizes that he is about to "loose" the audience, you can see him thinking for some seconds - and then he starts "All The Critics love you in Montreux" to rescue the atmosphere inside the concert hall
But I'm still asking myself why we had to suffer through the exact same setlist two times during one night - if he then doesnt release this DVD at all. He could have played two very different sets then and everybod would have went home happy.
But then again this is Prince we're talking about and the word "logic" doesnt belong to his vocabulary.....

My favorite section of night one has to be Love Like Jazz going into All This Love. All This Love is so much better live than on the studio version. It's ridiculous.

No, definitely not just you. My download speed is usually very fast. There must be a lot of traffic for this one. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hmmyes, I can agree with what you wrote in your post. So, although the performances are great, I consider Montreux 2009 a bad moment due to the whole mess surrounding these shows.
- The ticket agency did not have their house in order: we could buy tickets before the presale time and when we discovered this they could not simply fix that and had to invalidate tickets manually. - In the time before the festival P had his production mess w.r.t. 2 or 3 shows, big camera's, scenery setting for each show, etc - And then during the shows the utter lack of communication about the situation - The DVD non-release fiasco with a flawed explanation (to say the least) - The bootleggars getting away with the video
(and these are only the main issues...)

The best thing about these shows is no Shelby J! No backup singers, No horn section!! Somewhere here on earth is more enjoyable with out the trumpet
So far im lovin' dvd 2 | |

No Shelby? Then I am not interested.
Seriously though, this is one frustrating thread.
I really hope I get to see this one day (my sleuthing had come to ought;(

I'm delighted with it. Watched the first show last night and it was electric. The camera work is great, got to see close up shots of what he's playing on guitar. I have to agree with previous posters and say that Empty room is a definite highlight. I can't wait to watch again tonight!

disc 2 is my favourite, the only time it gets lost is during In A Large With No Light, it tends to go for a bit, other wise it's faultless, i love Peach, When U Were Mine, Spanish Castle Magic, All Shook Up. Purple Rain is just stunning. I do like disc 1 alot, especially Empty Room, i just like disc 2 better.

Great DVDs. Such a shame he couldn't have released them to his fan club at the time, generating some good will since all those folk will doubtless have these now anyway.
One theory for their non-release did present itself on a viewing however. The top half of his face looks a little 'pinched' during the close-ups.

- A matter of physical fact - An optical illusion - A make-up effect - etc

I've gotta say, I thought the same as McD (assuming I am understanding you correctly) that P looks (facially) a little odd in this one (he looks kind of puffy around the eyes, and a little tired) and I was wondering wether this (vanity, for want of a better word) might have been a contributing factor to the non-release.
Don't get me wrong, the dude looks amazing for his age, and younger than I (in my 30's) but it did make me wonder, as daft as it may sound. The real reason is probably far more mundane.
Amazing show, took me back to the ONA shows I caught (minus the horns of course). More shows like this please Prince.
