this show was probably more about showcasing his skills on guitar and singing as it didn't seem to involve a lot dancing and intercaction with the crowd. BUT Playing guitar and singing well by standing still is NOT as easy as u made it out to be. U must not be a fan of Jimi Hendrix shows either then cause that's all he would do during his shows minus the good singing. Not trying to convert anyone as i couldn't care less if anyone dislikes the show on here but when i see a reply i disagree with i have to reply to it which i did.. I understand that the concert isn't your cup of tea WE GET IT by now but acting like he went on stage and didn't do shit is crazy talk to me. To each his own though..

It IS that easy....for HIM. He used to be able to shred that shit and STILL do (a lot) more than be a statue. And that's all I'm talking about. And that's more of a statement or opinion of his performing style for the past few years altogether than it is for this one particular show.

As it's been said ad nauseum in the past few posts in this thread, different strokes for different folks, but most people here want to act like we're (myself, DigGard, Bart, Vitriol, OF4S, Wall, VC40, etc...) the devil incarnate for feeling this way and have no business listening to any of his music or being on this site. rolleyes

Nobody is jealous of the garbage you type on here. Pretty much everybody other than your asskissing minions thinks that you're quite annoying.

So keep thinking you're the shit when you're not. wink

I am by no means a sycophant to Prince, nor do I love everything he does but I really enjoy both styles of show, the energetic showmanship or the scaled back focus on the musicianship. Not to suggest that the two are mutually exclusive but to put these two shows in context, it was a well respected Jazz festival performed by a serious musician in his early 50s. I don't think that hydraulic beds, the splits, basketball hoops, firmemans poles and ejaculating guitars would have been appropriate for these shows. The first one is truer to the Jazz theme of the festival, the 2nd has more rock so overall a fantastic document of two specific areas of Prince's expertise. Just my humble opinion of course.

I am more excited about these dvds than anything Prince has put out for a long time.

Which begs the question why is it P can't see live releases are where he could capitalise most!

I dont think so. He wants us to come to his concerts, that's where he makes the most $$$. If he'd constantly release live DVDs, a lot of his older fans would stay at home and wait for the DVD/BluRay.

And you also have to put a lot of work in this releases and would be pirated immediately after the release. I really don't see that he would make lots of money with it.

[Edited 9/9/11 16:52pm]

What a load of bullcrap. Plenty of artists release recordings of ENTIRE TOURS and they don' seem to have a problem getting peopel to their gigs.

And all the work has been done by the Montreux organisation. But I bet Prince didn't like that he had to share the profits so they could recoup their costs or simply demanded an absurd amount of money.

The only thing that prevented this to be released was PRINCE'S GREED.

Montreux has got not that much to do with jazz or even "well respected". Let's look at some of this year's artists: Jimmy Cliff, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Guano Apes (one of the shittiest bands of all times), B. B. King, Milow, Arcade Fire, Mogwai,... Montreux is simply another festival where a lot of jazz and jazz alike artists are performing, and a lot of artists who have got nothing to do with jazz but just happen to tour at that time.

A fair point but not one that detracts from the gist of mine as I see it.

You mean he didn't read the CONtract?

Remember all the brouha before these shows about whatever milimeter (analog) camera's were needed, multiangle setup, different scenery settings for each show, etc...?

And then we end up with two takes of roughly the same songs -without any explanation by him during or after the show(s) about the reason(s) why- that do not get out except for via the weird 'illegal' ways.

His excuse for the recordings not being released was some contractual issue, so where is the proof about the monetary compensation thing?

Because if that is true, it is very sad indeed. This Prince person.

He knew (would and could have known) what he got into.

Hardly - most the faces he makes are made because of the sounds hes making on the guitar

The only thing that is sad here is YOU! A sad bad act at that

Agreed.

I like it when P plays his guitar with what Bart calls "orgasm faces".

To me, it seems to be natural and emotianla without being an act at all.

No point in trying to convince some people. If they think the "orgasm faces" are "an act" just because it's a 2009 show and not recorded in 1981, they'll continue thinking so. A bit sad, actually.

He only mugs on stage when he knows camera's or an audience is around to see him ham it up...

When he does screaming solo's during rehearsals or studio recordings or when he's alone with his crew he doesn't do them... And that says what?

It's just a well known act alot of guitarists do, nothing special...

It seems even nowadays people are more interested in his over-the-top fake mugging than the actual musicianship of his solo's, pretty sad...

Wrong.

The shows were filmed in HD, but these bootlegs are being released as DVD, which is of a lesser quality.

For them to be HD dvd they would need to be released as Blu-Ray, which they are not.

at the time of these concerts Prince was supposedly having 'hip' problems...painful problems which meant he wasn't in any state to 'perform' as he used to.....a couple years later, after rumours of surgery, he is a lot more mobile.......

sure we won't see him do the splits anymore....but he's got his swagger back a bit more nowdays...

it was interesting to watch him during this time..and listen....he really put a lot into the shows at the time, voice and guitar are sublime!!

and for the record I agree with Bart (which I usually don't own up to LOL) but Prince is faking it when he does the 'facials' while playing..not all the time but a lot more than he used to.....

these shows, whilst not 'mindblowing', certainly show his musicianship - and the bands...

and Rhonda's backless outfit is sexy as hell too!!

I didn't know every musician is suppose to play stone faced, sometimes when you're playing you're not aware of what your eyebrows or your mouth is doing. Just like dancers, every great dancer i've seen that gets really into the music and dance are not trying to fix their face so the audience will like how they look. That is why people can't let loose now days, because their afraid of what others will think.
